I am still in shock. Thankyou Dave for finding that out for us. I had just come back to update new info I just found out on the Voyage thread. I cannot say anymore now.

How can a company be so stupid? Shout Factory wants to distribute and release these... all Fox has to do is provide the prints. And sit back and make some money... Why not please those that have started and bought this show?

I would think that if Fox is refusing to license more episodes, I'd hope that it's because they were impressed by the sales and want to release more sets themselves. Or that would be the logical explanation anyway.
From your lips to God's ear I wish it were the case, but Fox has for the most part has been pretty lousy in releasing vintage titles from its TV holdings on DVD. look at the various release delays between seasons of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and others. I do tend to think they just don't give a damn sometimes because they're part of a big media conglomerate.
Right now I'm really having a disaster on my hands- over the holidays my house had a renovation and most of the DVD-Rs I've had over the years from the late '66- early '68 episodes can't be found. I'm praying they weren't thrown away by my nephew when he helped me empty out my room before the painting, but who knows......
! would invite Studio Rep's to take a look at MPI' and their sucess with Dark Shadows. I think they will find the same success with Peyton Place release's. Restored and with timely releases.
I think the Studio should look at some of our back Post's when Peyton Place first came out. The early posts reflect a great deal of interest in this show as I am sure you know. Shout Factory would not have wanted more episodes if this show was a faliure sales wise. I know that the Studio is aware of that as well.
Please consider giving Shout more episodes or a release from Fox itself. Thankyou
Mark
Dark Shadows Fans I really enjoy all the attention on the Laura Collins storyline. The storyline was my favorite on Dark Shadows. The reading has been much fun. I have been tempted to contribute but I am to long winded. So not to worry fans I will just be a most enjoyable reader.

Marc,
Please contribute! After all, you truly are a Collins -- perhaps a great grandson of Elizabeth?

Peyton Place fans perhaps it is time to rally around our show. Email phone or even write 20th Century Fox. Fox is celebrating 75 years of entertainment this year. How about releasing Peyton Place on MOD in honor of their celebration. Restore it and give it a regular release. Release the entire series at once. The other option turn more episode's over to Shout! Factory for release. Release the reunion movies in a separate release.
Fox Rep's I think fans will take Peyton Place The TV Series which ever way the Studio decides.
Jack hope the play went well or is going well. Hang in there Buddie!

I hope everyone is enjoying the great Dark Shadows Thread here in the Forum. I look forward to reading it every day. John Lasell appeared in Rod and Betty's annulment episode. I should think it was in Volume 2 of Peyton Place DVD's.

The Shout! Factory Select Program interested me. I emailed them about Peyton Place. The response was fast. Thankyou again Shout! I also emailed foxconnect@orderassistance.com Fox has not emailed me back about releasing more Peyton Place. They always answer my Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea emails. Peyton Place was leased out but it still is their show. Oh well I just stated I hoped they would release more episodes through Shout or Fox themselves.

Well, there's still hope....
Honor and Tribute to Mr Charles Ellis for the first release of Peyton Place one year ago. Charles who never gave up on his dream.
Quote from Charles Elis 2005
Warner Brothers. has had a great success with "Dallas" on DVD, and with the recent so-called "Dynasty" docudrama, people are again looking at the classic primetime soaps of the past. Soapnet is about to add 90210 to its lineup, and of course we all know about that current show on Sunday nights on ABC.
However, some people seem to have forgotten that exactly 40 years ago the Alphabet Network had a primetime soap that The folks on Wisteria Lane owe a lot to characters like the virginal Allison McKenzie, rich stud Rodney Harrington, town vamp Betty Anderson Harrington Cord Harrington, evil patriarch Martin Peyton, stalwart town doctor Mike Rossi, the brooding Steven Cord and his sinsiter housekeeper mom Hannah, single mom-with-a-secret Constance McKenzie, young lovers Rita Jacks and Norman Harrington, tragic nurse Ann Howard and the troubled Webbers. By the way, Ryan O' Neal is doing an appearance on Desperate Housewives playing a character named- RODNEY!!!
Peyton Place is a classic just waiting to be discovered by a new generation. If MPI can have a great allsoaps, Peyton Place! For 5 years (and 514 episodes!) millions watched the saga of life in that notorious small town that was truly the spiritual ancestor to Desperate Housewives, led by a truly memorable cast that had a mixture of Hollywood veterans (Dorothy Malone, George Macready, Ruth Warrick, Leslie Nielsen, Kent Smith, Barbara Rush), New York-based actors on the rise (Lee Grant, Ruby Dee, Gena Rowlands) and hot newcomers who became household names (Ryan O'Neal, Mia Farrow, Barbara Parkins, Leigh Taylor-Young, Mariette Hartley, Christopher Connelly.
FOX has all of the original negatives in their vaults, and new prints will have to be made for a DVD release- as I mentioned before, the current syndication prints are in terrible shape and need a do-over. Considering that a good deal of the cast is still around, it would be nice to have interviews and commentaries with any future DVD sets.
BTW, back in '73, ABC aired a late night special Peyton Place Revisited, which was a retrospective on the show, and had new interviews with the cast, especially Mia Farrow who was then living in London. I was lucky to see it back then, and to my knowledge it's never been shown on TV again. When PP is released, this special should be used as a DVD extra.

It is one of the most thoroughly addictive shows ever...

Peyton Place is one of only two soaps I would consider purchasing if it was eventually released on DVD. I'm a fan of Dark Shadows, and I did watch episodes of Peyton Place during its original run, as my parents loved the show. Let me know what I can do to influence TPTB to release this classic! As I commented last year, I loved the show and would gladly make it the second 'soap' in my collection. It's first-rate, and included some very big names (and excellent chemistry) in that show. I read the Grace Metalious work when I was in High School. It was a very good and interesting read. If anyone thinks of a way to convince TPTB to release this fine series, please post those ideas here. I'd be willing to do some writing or calling. From Scott
Over the last few years I've been compiling interviews with the surviving writers & directors, plus a few of the cast members, and they all remember it with astonishing clarity, and as one of the great experiences in their careers. (The only other TV series I've written about where I've encountered that level of passion from the people who worked on it is East Side/West Side.) Peyton Place was a "young" show, with more people in their 20s and 30s both in front of and behind the camera than was typical for that era, but the window of opportunity is closing. From Stephen
Well- It's 2008, and still no Peyton Place on DVD I have to say it is a very enjoyable television show. Great writing and acting, well paced, and engaging story lines. What can we do to get this officially released from the studio? From Jack
While "PEYTON PLACE" the series was good, it was not half as good as the films, with Lana Turner, Hope Lange, Diane Varsi, Terry Moore, and Russ Tamblyn. The series cut central characters from the series and totally ignored the focus of the films or books. I would love to see the pilot, which was said to have totally followed the film. Selena and the Cross family were included in the pilot, but were eliminated when the series began. From Alan

That's old news - they've been talking about talking to Fox to release more episodes for some time.![]()
I do wonder how FOX/SHOUT deterimned the cut off for the first batch/two DVDs licenced?
64 episodes of 514. While The 490 remining episodes would fit on 15 DVDs of 30 each, where's would switch over to color fall in these batches of 30?
About halfway through.
I thought when SHOUT originally acquired "PP" that SHOUT had the rights to the episodes until Allison's departure from the series, which was the Howard/Weber story arc or the black and white episodes ?? It seems like that is somewhere at the beginning of this thread ??

They have to be edited prints, because I noticed one scene shown in a preview that did not appear in the following episode. I also saw some obvious blunt cuts in some of the short episodes, but, in general, the editing on the shorter episodes is seemless enough that unless you notice the timing, you wouldn't recognize anything was missing.
Hiya
First of all I would like to say 'hello' to everyone and hope that all is going well. My leukaemia had been dormant for a bit but now I am having problems show up in my blood reports so it looks like I may have another rough road ahead. No worries! Life is good and I am so very blessed!
I was wondering if anyone knew if there is any way possible to find the daytime version, RETURN TO PEYTON PLACE somewhere out there? I LOVED it and saw every eppy back then, but of course it was pre=home recording at ours and the audio tapes I made turned to dust long ago as they do over the years. It would be so wonderful to get to see the daytime version again...as well as the rest of the night time run and maybe the original pilot with the Cross family. I always loved Selena Cross as I adored Hope Lange as well.
Any road, keep well everyone and remember to stop and smell the roses each and every day.
cheers and blessings to all our Peyton Place fans!!!!!!

Eden very good to hear from you. I am afraid we shall never see Return to Peyton Place. The trouble we are having just to get Fox to give Shout! Eden my thoughts and Prayers are with you. Thanyou again for dropping us a line.

The chances of any daytime soap opera shot on videotape from the early 70s still existing are frankly very remote.
I have to confess I got into this show with the two Shout releases mostly because I found it was an ideal bit of background viewing on a portable player when on the road traveling. After exhausting the two official releases I did go the "boot" route and continued. And then when I got to the halfway point in the run which is when Mia Farrow left, that's when I bailed out and just skipped ahead to see the two reunion movies "Murder In Peyton Place" and "Peyton Place The Next Generation" (neither of which has anything in common with each other, but more about that later) and I seriously doubt I will find myself revisiting this show again.
I'll say first off that I did see a good deal of strong acting in the series, far advanced over the kind of silliness I associate with 80s primetime soaps like "Dynasty" etc. but I think if anything the acting was enhanced by the fact that the writing had to be much sharper and less explicit than in later decades. Just as I find movies dealing with frank subjects to be better written in the Production Code era, so too can it be said of a show like this.
I really found myself missing Warner Anderson's Matt Swain after he left the show, especially since his voice continued to do the opening narration which had the odd effect of making it seem like a ghost hanging over the proceedings from beyond. BTW, can a fan of this show tell me if there was ANY mention of what ultimately happened to Matt Swain? Did he just die while he was on his round the world trip or did he just move away from Peyton Place after returning? You'd think that if Warner Anderson was still available to do the narration, he could have at least made one final appearance to close his saga. Apart from this niggling detail, I did think otherwise, the writers did do a good job of maintaining continuity over a long stretch (which could not be said of "Peyton Place: The Next Generation")
The high point for me in watching this show was the still unreleased by Shout Rodney trial, and the fascinating run of Lee Grant's Stella Chernak on the show. I could see why she won an Emmy, *especially* when I then later saw Stella Stevens's pitiful and laughable attempt to play the character in "Murder In Peyton Place" (and recreating an actual scene from the original series with Ed Nelson that I had earlier seen Lee do). After that, with the arrival of Susan Oliver and her plotline that was when I started to say "Enough!" for the same reason I find soap operas in general to be so tedious. Even when you get closure to a plotline, before you know it, there'll be a new wave of dysfunction and discontent to rear its ugly head once again and before you know it everything is the same-old, same-old endless rut. I literally have no idea how daytime soap fans can stand it. In some respects as I went further along, this is where I missed the Matt Swain character more and more, because he seemed like the one character who was never going to be affected by any dysfunction, and could at least serve as a pillar of stability.
Still, I'm glad I watched what I did, because I think in the end my understanding of the history of TV in the 60s and also how Fox was producing shows in those days was enhanced a good deal and that has the ripple effect of understanding the behind the scenes aspects of other shows I'm more a fan of. And it was also interesting to see "on the way up" actors in this early period of the show in small parts like Gregg Morris just before "Mission: Impossible" as a police desk sergeant, or James Doohan as a servant at the Peyton mansion (I imagine if Star Trek hadn't sold he would have had to keep doing this show for a steady paycheck!). As a big fan of Mariette Hartley, I was also fascinated by her stint on the show just to see if all the stories she's told over the years about how she was playing a "frigid doctor" were correct or not.
I hope those who are diehard fans of this show will one day get more legit DVD releases.
Eden I received your PM. I thought I would answer here.
Return to Peyton Place I am sure will remain in the vaults at Fox. The only soaps I know ever to be shown twice before soap channel were The Edge of Night and Search for Tomorrow on the USA network. I was a big fan of Edge and followed it to it's ABC move. I always thought it ironic it should end up in my number 1 favorite soap Dark Shadows time slot. My number 2 would be Peyton Place and number 3 Dallas. Edge would come in at 4 and gulity pleasure's Dynasty and Knots Landing at 5. I do not own episodes of either of the last two. Dallas I quit buying after Season 11. I will admit to watching some of Falcon Crest but very few episodes.
I am currently not a fan of Network daytime soaps though I was into Luke and Laura on GH.
I fear in the next 10 to 15 years Soaps may be gone. Sad to all those who have watched a certain soap they like for many years. I think in the future you may buy Return to Peyton Place straight from Fox or any soaps that have prints still around such as in the vaults of P&G. The key is if there are prints still around.
I always marvel at this fact. I as kid I would never believe I could go out and buy Dark Shadows in a retail store. The fact I bought all episodes of my favorite show still blows me away. The fact I was on a dead run home from school to see it WOW!!!!
I always felt they should have a channel for old soaps. I guess they feel there is not a market for them. Look how many Stars have got their start on soaps. The old soaps I am sure would look dated and storyines tedious. Soaps were a major part of the TV landscape in the 50s thru the 80s. The soaps gave would be Stars their start and the networks many dollars. Now daytime
mirrors nighttime. Reality Reality and more Reality shoved down our throughts. The last tv series I watched was Battlestar Galactica the new one. I even tired of that near the end. I went though and bought each home video release even the Plan. Got the shaft when they put in blu-ray box set. I would rebuy however the 1978 BSG in blu-ray
I never thought Peyton Place would end up on home video and it happened. I have not given up on Shout! Factory there may be more. I would just like a whole box set restored MOD offered to Fans for purchase.
I am listening and reading my Grandfathers diary which covers most of his life this summer. He had interviewed some of the oldest people in our family on our history. He did this on tape on trip to New York State. The conversation comes to a quick halt. The people state "Enough it is almost 9:30". Grandpa said "So it is 8:30 where I come from". The people state " No you don't get it Peyton Place will be on in a few minutes"! I WAS IN SHOCK!!! HOW COOL WAS THAT!!!!
Thanks again Eden for your great thoughts!!!
My prayers are with you

"Return to Peyton Place I am sure will remain in the vaults at Fox."
Not to belabor this point, but that is really a remote possiblity. The networks simply did not keep shows on videotape from that era, and I can cite the parallel situation of that other staple of daytime television, the game show. Almost *all* of the network daytime game shows from the early 70s have been wiped out of existence if the show aired on NBC or ABC. CBS did retain their tapes long enough for the production companies to eventually reclaim copies for themselves which is why "The Price Is Right" which debuted in 1972 still exists from the beginning. But if the production company just wasn't interested in paying money for tapes that they had no practical use for from a storage standpoint since old soaps had no repeat value, then they weren't going to keep them and the networks could just recycle the tapes and save money.
You'll be lucky to find so much as a single epiode or two of a soap opera from that era that still exists, let alone the whole run. That's how it is with many a game show that aired the same day. "Password" was back on ABC from 71-75 and there are exactly *three* episodes in the archives that escaped destruction out of more than a thousand that aired. UCLA did record a number of daytime programs on select dates between 71 and 73 and I think a couple episodes of "Return" would fall in that category but again its random chance preservation, not the result of careful planning.
Again, I'm not trying to dampen your hopes, but a little cold common sense is called for in regards to understanding how network preservation practices worked in those days with shows that were not presented on film and why expectations generally have to be quite low. That's just the way it is, and I can say that after many years of studying network preservation practices for game shows, newscasts, sports and late night talk shows (Johnny Carson's first eight and a half years were mostly wiped out).
I think it boils down to who owns the soap. Fox may still have the show and it could be on video tape or film. The only reason I say this is because it was a spin off of Peyton Place. Fox PR people really pushed Retrun as an event for daytime. I remember only watching 1 episode. The other factor is ABC WIDE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT aired a 90 minuted special on the old show. The transcripts from the show were for sale on ebay some 8 to ten years ago.
Peyton Place went to the country in reruns daytime in 1976 because I was in college then. The same time Dark Shadows was trying the big city markets with it's first year. Peyton Place reruns ran here on CBS daytime. DS aired on our non network station. Peyton had a full run but DS was not so lucky in reruns here.
Peyton came back again in the early 80s on USA network. The show only aired up to the Ann Howard story and was done. Dallas was so big that I had read CBS renewed it to 1990 at that time. Edge of Night reruns I did not follow but USA aired the ABC prints I saw a few.
P&G may have started to keep tapes after 1976. I remember Edge had a night time airing for the ABC move. Someone I thought stated here that Return to Peyton Place also had 1 or 2 prime time airings. Now that might help the chance's if true for the show being in the Fox Vault.
I remember about 10 years ago a Luke and Laura Adventure's from GH on Home Video. I never bought it though. The Guiding Light Movie or cast from GL in the movie I do not think has ever been on Home Video.
The movie "Driving Miss Daisy" has a clip from The Edge of Night playing on the kitchen TV. So who knows what P&G may have or does not have.
My Mother still will watch As the World Turns from time to time. She told me she saw clips of old shows with Lisa and Bob in them from early days wanting to move from Bobs folks house. She said the actors that are on the series now reshot episodes in Lisa's life for a party. My Mother Loves Y&R and watch's it twice a day and weekends. I hope that stays on for awhile. You cannot call her when that show is on.
Eden I am afraid Jack may be right in his estimate. I just think Return with a major studio involved and the Peyton name which became part of the lexicon in America for many years. Return has an 80% chance for still being in the Fox Vault.
Eden I thank you and Jack for at least a good end to my evening. I had just finished a call from a buddie about VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. He was not pleased with the episode. I will leave it there.
For soaps, an alternate to DVD might be uploading them online. Look at the soap opera "Another World." Over 320 episodes from 1980-1981 were posted on the AOL Classic P&G Soap channel before that venture folded. Currently, there are over 320 episodes from 1991-1992 posted on Hulu. I don't believe any other cancelled soap apart from Dark Shadows has had that many episodes made available, either on DVD or online, over 600. I wish other soaps would pop up.
Peyton Fans I did some investigating on Retrun to Peyton Place. Prints do exist of the series. The rights are owned by NBC and 20th Century Fox. I have been led to believe it is on film. The vault is firmly shut on this show as it stands now. I cannot see down load in the future if both Fox and NBC must be in agreement to let this happen. Who knows though. I am very very gratefull to Sue Ellen for the wonderful synopsis of plots on the show. I thought they were great!!! Fans visit TV Encyclopedia .com. They have a great article on the show pictures from the main staircase of the Peyton House. Which we of the old show will relate to. IMBD has message boards for you on the show. Follow those links. The same goes for TV Encyclopedia.
I have been busy in other matters. The last few weeks I have been very busy pushing our show. I want to print here what those wonderful wonderful people namely BRIAN!!!
keep each show in ONE thread), we have nothing to expedite. We've released
every episode we licensed from Fox of Peyton Place. We're working on getting
more, but it requires wheelin' and dealin' and negotiations, so it could be a
while. But we are trying. Just want to clarify that there's nothing holding up
future releases on our end.
Keep enjoying 'em. We'll continue to try to get more for ya'.
