I'm on Disc 2 now. I should mention the episodes are closed-captioned. There are chapter stops where the commercial breaks would be. The original 20th Television Fox logo is included at the end. Black levels change from episode to episode. Some episodes are a little too dark. Episode 7 is in bad shape and doesn't look like the others. Some jerkiness and not as sharp. Was it like that on the Romance channel? I'll post some more pics later for comparison.

What a stroke of luck to get Peyton Place. I think what you have shown will be a good tool to drive sales of the series. It is a great sneak preview for us fans and those who might climb aboard. I agree with Alan Charles Jack and all others THANKYOU SO VERY MUCH RON!!!

I'm really enjoying the series thus far! The writing is excellent, and the acting is top notch!

I'm especially overjoyed that actress Kasey Rogers (Julie Anderson) is one of the stars featured predominately in these early episodes. She also played Louise Tate on "Bewitched" and I even met her on several occasions at different memorabilia shows throughout the years. I wish she was still alive so I could tell her about Peyton Place. She has a real "meaty" role and it is a delight to see her in a dramatic mode as opposed to her comedic role on "Bewitched." She looks different without her black wig.

Also, the video quality on episodes 7 and 11 don't look as good as the others. Looks like 16mm prints to me. Still watchable, but looks like something you'd find on a budget public domain dvd.

As you can see, there are 9 episodes out of 31 with shorter running times (roughly 1/3).

I'm up to disc 3. I think its safe to say now that I don't think the episodes have been remastered. The episodes certainly are viewable, but the picture quality varies from episode to episode. Most of the episodes are clean and sharp, but a few look like they are from 16mm prints with minor scratches and specs of dirt.
However, that should not scare you because the writing is excellent, the acting top-notch, and the story-line is very addicting. I'm breezing right through this set which is pretty amazing for me considering how many other sets I own.
The show is dated--but in a good way. Back in the early 1960's, it was considered risque for tackling adult themes and mature subject matter. They couldn't say words like "pregnant" on TV back then, so its amusing to watch them skirt around the issue when a teenage character named Betty finds out she is just that. This only adds to the show's charm. For example, instead of saying, "Betty is pregnant." they say, "Betty went to see the doctor today" or "Betty's not a little girl anymore" and everybody seems to know exactly what they're talking about!

I watched the show when it first aired and I was in sixth grade. I remember how it was considered so daring for it's day. I had never seen the film and I also remember the popularity of the series brought back into theaters in like 66, I think a double bill of both "PP" and "RTPP". I went to see them, and I thought this is nothing like the series. I remember that a few of the major characters were still in the film but Rossi, went from Principal of the local HS, to a Dr @ the hospital, Leslie had no wife in the film, The Anderson's were not in the film, and Constance had a dress shop, Norman was not Rodney's brother in the film, There were many character's missing from the film that were on the series, I found it confusing (the film) from the series. So, I went to the library and dug out the book.......... need I say more !!! I find it amusing how they skirted around the issue. I can see why they axed the CROSS family. However, they could have had them and not covered the storyline from the book or the film. The book "INSIDE PP", compares the Chernak family that arrives later to the CROSS family. I think they could have kept them in the series and avoided the story line from the book and film. However, I can't imagine what 60's television thought when the series arrived. Maybe they were expecting a mirror of the film ?? I also wonder why Warner Anderson left the series so early in it's run........ He was like the wise old sage. In the series he was Allison's uncle, not in the book or film.
I must say after Mia Farrow left, the series never really recovered. It was sort of like when Pam left "DALLAS", that series never made it again.
THANKS FOR THE PHOTOS they are great to see again. I can't wait for the DVDS to arrive. However, I must say after Mia leaves the series not sure I will buy future ones, unless I get really hooked. Also, how long was Dorothy Malone out of the series, anyone remember ?? She was replaced by Lola Albright for what about 30 episodes ?? And same with George MacRaedy when he was out.....

I don't think its time compression. I did watch an episode where the background music was cut off abruptly where a scene changed. Looked like bad editing to me, but since I never watched the show before, I don't know what is missing.
Also, Episode #15 contains an extended opening credit. Right after the "Mia Farrow as Allison MacKenzie" credit, the announcer says, "Peyton Place is brought to you by...". This is where they would put the sponsor's commercial. This wasn't included on the other earlier episodes I watched. There was just a quick fade out after Mia Farrow's credit.

Hi Ron you are fantastic!!! I was not surprised at what you stated about the Series in general. Thank you so much for those observations. It is always nice to feel my opinions validated and others as well. If you know where the show breaks off with background music and could provide the previews for that episode perhaps Charles who knows the show so well could look for an edit. Perhaps even myself who has some knowledge of the series might be of help. The Cast intro does it show a drawing of the town and then the show begins? I love the part you wrote about Betty. The series does go on to call it a baby later episodes talks of calling it John. Charles is right the Ski lodge episodes is nicely done. I like the clam bake on the beach as well. The show with Connie's afternoon Maid Mrs S is good too.

Alan I am 100 percent sure you will be on board for the whole series. The Mia Farrow departure I cannot equate to Pan leaving Dallas. I am on avid Dallas fan who just bought season 11 though it is really 1O as all fans know. The show went in the tank after Pam but their were some Sue Ellen and Jr moments. The finale an upside down version with freez frame of who shot Jr was worth the viewing. The rest forget it. Barbara Eden in the last year of the show I might buy I do not know. Alan you also asked when who left so here is what I know. Connie and Elliot and Les Harrington spring of 1968 departed. Martin Peyton start of Winter of 67-68. I think Mia leaving opened up lots of plot lines. The Carsons had lots to deal with because of it and so did the town. I always stated after a certain formal Wedding the show should have of ended. The writers tried to appeal to the youth with a new openinig to the show. Youth dominated plot lines and handicaping the rest of the orginal cast. Finding it's legs during the last month of shows.

I have to say once again Ron keep those Posts coming!!! I love the support you are giving the show as a first time veiwer.

Hi. Thanks so much for responding to my post. I have always thought Vince was a great actor that was typecast after Ben Casey. Matt Lincoln was a cross between Room 222, Mod Squad, and East Side West Side. Vince played a psychiatrist who ran a walk-in clinic and a telephone hotline for emotionally troubled college age students. They came to him desperately seeking help. This series was brainlessly scheduled in 1970 by ABC at 7:30 opposite Flip Wilson and Jim Nabors. Can you believe a series of this genre airing so early in the evening? Of course, it missed its target audience completely and was cancelled after sixteen episodes. It was never given a chance in the appropriate timeslot. Also, the pilot film for Matt Lincoln titled Dial Hot Line starred Vince and Kim Hunter. This aired as an ABC tv movie of the week..
Matt Lincoln was a well written series with great guest stars such as Patty Duke, Martin Sheen, Darren McGavin, Barbara Feldon, Peter Deuel, Joan Van Ark, just to name a few. I will take your advice and request Ben Casey and Matt Lincoln. It has to help the release of the latter. Thanks for your good wishes. I hope I see the day that both Vince's series come out on dvd.

Happy to help, Mark! The episode in question is #13. Around 9 minutes in, there is an establishing shot of some workers tearing down the festival booths. There is background music playing and it is abruptly cut off and switches to a shot of Allison walking down the sidewalk. Not exactly a smooth transition.

Regarding the cast intro: they do show a drawing of the town on the screen when the announcer says, "Peyton Place is brought to you by...".

My absolute favorite scene so far takes place at the Shoreline, when Betty tries to get Rodney's attention by dancing in front of his table. She's naughty and I like it! In fact, I prefer the whole troubled Anderson clan better than the MacKenzies, who are a little too goody-goody for me, but that might change as the story unravels. Oh, and Catherine Harrington is a hoot, too!

As you can see, I'm fast becoming a fan!

Ron as I said before it is great that your enjoying the show. Charles is right about scenes from the movie I totaly forgot that. They also use some music from the two films. George and Matt talking while the workers are busy and then the shot to Allison. It does seem to be a lousy cut but I think nothing was edited out. At least I hope not. You will see Bettys dance repeated but new and very provactive in summer of 1966. She again dances for Rodney but there is another element. That episode from 1966 is on the list of my Peyton Place favorite episodes. Ron keep those posts coming many thanks again. You are bringing back lots of good memories of the show. Charles I saw David Hedison climb out of the window in Doctors Hospital in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea season 4. It is a great shot.

Oh, yes. I totally noticed that and recognized it as stock footage. I didn't know it was from the movie, though! Thanks for the trivia! That was a great way for them to save money.

Lots of stock footage was used in the series. The ocean alot snow spring they got a lot from the two movies. It gave the series a nice look. The town itself too in the early episodes. They did a very nice location scean another of my favorite episodes which I hope is restored. Summer of 1967 and horse the ocean and two favorite characters or three unseen by the other two. The episode was very well done! So you have a lot to look forward to Ron.

I wonder how many of these review sets are floating around? I sure envy you Ken! Thankyou for the FYI . I wonder if you will see the same problems Ron found? Gary- In Season 1 we see Constance putting out Christmas decorations in the book store, and later packing them up, if I remember correctly. No specific Christmas episode there. In the second season, the time frame of the episodes does not match the airdates (December broadcast episodes still have a late summer/fall look to them, probably because the established storyline of the Chernak/Harrington murder trial is moving along at a slow and steady pace. I suppose time was moving slower in Peyton Place than in our own world-I'm not sure about future episodes, as I have not seen past the first year and a half-

Wish I could stumble across PP in the used DVD bin for an extra copy. Of course resales does not help Rhino with guaging public response for future releases.

I am still hopeful that future volumes will hold some extras as well- Dark Shadows from MPI does a great job at this

Well, I am STILL DYING to see that unaired pilot, with the Cross family............
Since, it follows the book more closely...........
Hoping they include that eventually, it was an hour pilot.
According to "INSIDE PP" , Michael Rossi's name was changed for the paperback, due to a lawsuit of a former colleague of George, Grace's husband.
And some of the characters from the book are based on real people she knew.
Did not know FOX bought options to film 'THE TIGHT WHITE COLLAR" but Jerry Wald died before he could film it. And RTPP does not really follow the novel either..............

Gary if you are a "Lost in Space" fan you will see Connies house decorated with a Christmas Tree in the living room as I remember. The episode was Will returns to earth. The episode shows the outside of Connies house as well. The episode must have been an Irwin Allen Christmas show for Space's first season in black and white. He also had a Christmas episode in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea with a Tree in the nose of the Seaview. The first season of Voyage is when the episode aired. Alan you may find "The Girl From Peyton Place" a paper back a good read. Try the big river for it. Grace husband wrote it. I am with you Jack I would buy the used one but not replace it with my order for a new one. Then I really guess everyone has given up extras. I was hoping these were just barebone dvds. I am not complaining I am getting the show and will take it however they sell it.

Just finished Disc 4.
Episode 23 is cut. This is one of the shorter episodes with a running time of 23.24.

SPOILERS...............In the preview for episode 23 (pictured below), they show George telling Julie that Les is free to be hers now that Katherine is dead. However, during the actual episode, that brief exchange of dialogue is missing. It cuts out right after Les leaves the two of them alone in the office.



I'm on to the fifth and final disc #5. I'm especially enjoying the Betty Anderson/Leslie Harrington exchanges. Betty is certainly learning how to be ruthless from a real pro!

Ron this is not the first time this is happened. The 1966 color fall episode cuts dialog in the Peyton House that happens between Les and Martin Peyton in the previews but is not in the upcoming show.
