Letterman on a roll..

As NBC prepares to re-shuffle it's mix, Dave is having one of the best two week periods I can remember.

First he gets net-wide writeups for his take down of former Illinois Governor Blagovich.

David Letterman doesn?t only play it for laughs - Television- msnbc.com

Then he gets the crew of the 1549

Now, he's back headlining news pages from the bizzarre appearance of Joaquin Phoenix last night.

CBS has got to be happy with this.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

I have always preferred Dave over Jay. I am glad Dave is finally get his long overdue respect.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

That segment with Joaquin was a return to the good old days where Dave would skewer guests who actively deserved it. Makes me think of an episode from the way back with Nastassja Kinski and John Candy as guests. Kinski was literally incoherent and Dave simply dismantled her. Candy came out later doing a dead on imitation of Kinski....good times....

Re: Letterman on a roll..

I'm sorry, but why are people (not just here, but everywhere) talking about the Phoenix interview? It was so clearly an act, by an actor making a documentary with his brother in law, that it wasn't in the least bit funny. Dave even seemed to be in on it.

I guess I just long for the days of Crispin Glover and Harmony Korine.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

If you watch the whole video of the Phoenix interview, he takes off his glasses, shakes Dave's hand and says "good job" at the end. I think it was a stunt.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

Thanks for that link. The clip I watched on NBC didn't have the ending... it tapered off as Dave was saying, "We owe Farrah Fawcett an apology."

Re: Letterman on a roll..

Plus he's having U2 as the musical guests for the entire first week in March. First time ever a band is on the whole week or more than one night even.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

I could have sworn that Pearl Jam did a multi-day stint a while back. Am I remembering incorrectly? Or was it for Leno?

Re: Letterman on a roll..

That had to be an act. It was entertaining as hell, but there's no way that was real. I don't think Joaquin Phoenix is that screwed up......at least I hope not.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

Well, since embarking on his rap career, I'm told he's yet to preform completely sober. It's possible that he's just circling the drain. As with Crispin Glover and some other wacko guests, Dave tried polite for the first couple minutes and got nowhere with it. Only once he's exhausted that avenue does he turn merciless.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

I saw it live.
was clearly a bit.
he nearly started laughing himslef once when he looked up
and peered either into the audience or at the monitor.

i though it was a riot.
dave went along with it perfectly
shooting jabs and insults at phoenix.

"sorry you could't be here toniight"
"what's with the beard"

was good stuff.

he did take his glasses off at the end and shake Dave's hand.
his head was turned away from the camera so i don'r know how anyone could tell what he said.

even Paul was taking jabs at him.

that doesn't seem to be the entire clip, I see a couple of jump cuts
on that video.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

I'm have no doubts Dave was in on it, and I love it. I hope they drag it on for a while, till the documentary comes out. Man Dave is hilarious though, so damn quick it's awesome.

Re: Letterman on a roll..

Apparently audience members from the show are saying it was clearly staged:

"Now that it's aired: it was an act. During the breaks he laughed with Dave and after it was over he smiled and laughed and waived to the audience. An act. A brilliant, hilarious act."

Just one comment on the Letterman board.
