Warner Brothers will finally release the Charles Bronson movie "Telefon" on DVD (May 19th)!

I forgot to tell you the source: dvddigitalbits

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

Nico,

YESSSSSSSS This is one that I'd given up on seeing a release in the 21st century. Since it's from WB, it should be an anamorphic release.

Curious....were you referring to the Digital Bits as your source? I read Bill H's 2-cents posts daily but I guess I missed this one.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

Is this film making its debut on DVD? I thought MGM released this years ago. Its a shame most of Bronson's films haven't gotten a proper release and an even bigger shame no one thought to sit him down for a commentary or interview before he passed. I don't remember seeing him in any kind interview-did he shun the spotlight or something?

It did see a VHS release years ago but to my knowledge, this is the first official release. I tried to find the news post at the Digital Bits for this one but I haven't found it yet.

I thought I remembered seeing a laserdisc release years ago.

Meanwhile, Warner has also announced a series of double feature DVDs due on 5/19, including Telefon/St. Ives, Bloodsport/Timecop, Bullitt/Papillon, A Clockwork Orange/O Lucky Man and The Great Bank Hoax/The Great Bank Robbery. Also newly announced by the studio are an Ultimate WWII Collection: Deluxe Edition box set and an Ultimate Factories Collection: Deluxe Edition box set (both for National Geographic), as well as My Family: Season Four, My Family: Season Three and Open All Hours: Complete Series (all for the BBC), all set to street on 6/9.

So, Telefon will be released as part of a double feature DVD with St. Ives.

DVD Empire is taking pre-orders for all of these.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

Yep, it's up on today's 'Bits for Bill's 'My 2 Cents". Thanks for the tip on this, Nico!

Another double-dip for me, though...St Ives is in this as a double-feature. Also, I see "Timecop" paired with another movie. If Timecop is anamorpic, as seems to be the trend with a lot of the recent box-set multi-feature re-releases, that's another dd for me. I have the PAL anamorphic version of Timecop since that one had never been released in R1 (as enhanced WS).

Double-dipping.....part of this hobby, I guess. I'm leaning on keeping some of my originals since they're single-sided vs a lot of these double-feature/box set double-sided re-releases.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

I have very fond memories of MGM releasing a group of Bronson titles each and every year but of course this dried up after the "open matte" DEATH WISH sequels. I hope they release the rest of their Bronson titles as well as fixing the issues with the DW films.

If I didn't already have them, I'd definitely pick up Bullitt/Papillon. But, I'm certainly looking forward to Telefon.

However, it´s odd that Warner Brothers will release "Telefon" together with "St. Ives".
Why won´t they release it as a single DVD disc?

I don't think it's odd at all since both films came out about a year apart and you're getting two films for $14.97 MSRP so those of us that shop on line probably can get this DVD release for around $10 or so.

Mr Crawford,
but Bronson fans like to have the single cover of "Telefon". Look on dvdempire.com.
There is the cover listed and it´s a general cover with Bronson on it.
I would appreciate a single cover of "Telefon" more.......

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

You mean certain Bronson fans. I'm one and I just want the films done right on DVD at an affordable price which is what Warner is giving me.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

Crawdaddy, agree on this one. While I'm not crazy about 2-sided DVD's and I already have "St Ives", the one I've been waiting for, Telefon, is worth this buy. As you said, hard to beat the price for these 2 Bronson movies.

I think WB's new fondness for double features is a reaction to the declining market for catalog releases. The co-feature is an added purchase incentive for those who don't already own the single release of ST. IVES.

Personally, I'd rather have single-title releases. But given the state of the market we're lucky that we're getting TELEFON in any form.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

I already have ST IVES, so now I have to double dip I guess. Wished they paired TELEFON with a different title, but I dont think there is any other Bronson title left from Warner's catalog.

Same here. In fact, I could have sworn I owned a copy, but I can't find it anywhere. I must have dreamt it.

That´s not correct!
"From Noon Till Three"(from 1976) and "The White Buffalo"(from 1977) are also MGM movies.
Warner should have the rights on those Bronson titles, too.
Those two titles were only officially released in Japan.
I own both japanese DVD´s and the picture quality is outstanding!

Good point about the recent trend to double-feature releases. I also prefer the single (single-sided) releases but you said it best, with the older titles, we're fortunate to get Telefon on DVD.

I used to be one of those "Laserdisc" guys. I don't remember seeing Telfon on LD. I still have a few LD's and I looked thru mine to check. I'd have bought Telefon on LD if it had been available.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

"Telefon" had never been released on Laserdisc.
The only Bronson title from the 70´s that still isn´t released on DVD worldwide but was released on Laserdisc is "The Stone Killer".

Hopefully, Columbia will release "The Stone Killer" this year on DVD.

Those two are actually UA films, so are now owned by MGM. Suprised they didnt make it onto the Bronson DVD Box Set they released sometime back.

Actually WHITE BUFFALO was on LD from MGM, in widescreen, as a Bronson box set. I actually have the box set still, awaiting WHITE BUFFALO's DVD release.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

FROM NOON TILL THREE is another one that needs to be released. It seems Bronson fans are mixed on this one but I enjoyed it as we get to see him in a different way. DEAD TO RIGHTS is another one I'd like to see released. I'm sure most would hate the film but I found it sleazy enough to enjoy.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

Though it's gotten umpteen PD releases and a semi-legit one from Fox Lorber, WB may still have some DVD rights to RED SUN with Bronson and Toshiro Mifune; it was a National General release in the U.S.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

I love Bronson, so this is just great news! Some of the "Soviet sequences" (of the film) were actually filmed in my home town here in Helsinki, Finland. So finally I can see this film in a proper way.

Hold the phone! Since when does Warner hold the rights to Timecop? Uni released this on an HD DVD combo disc just before that format was discontinued.

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

Almost all the Largo-produced films that Fox and Universal released are reverting to WB through some sort of new acquisition deal - I guess the HD of TIMECOP and the Blu-Ray of POINT BREAK were done at the last minute just as those studios were losing their rights.

Today "Telefon" is released in the USA.
Does anybody already got it and can do a review about the DVD(picture quality and so on)......?

Re: Charles Bronson: Telefon (19th May) on DVD!

I watched "Telefon" last night. The picture is 1.85:1 anamorphic, but a bit disappointing. It doesnt look like its been cleaned up for DVD. Some scenes are quite blurred, but other scenes are fine. I expect the blurring is a fault of the original photography.

Only extra is a trailer, but I'm still glad to have the DVD in my collection.
