Motion Blur on a Plasma?

Hi Everyone,

I have a Samsung 50" plasma, model number FPT5084, with 1080p resolution. I just moved from Boston to New York and upon plugging my HD cable box in, I recently noticed I have motion blurring. It isn't all the time and infact it's a specific event.

Whenever I watch hockey and they are panning from end to end, there is DISTINCTIVE blurring on the screen, almost looks like a time lapse picture where there are multiple images on the screen at once. It's most noticeable on the circles on either side of the goal. Usually happens when they are going from a narrow angle to a wide angle and panning left or right.

I've never noticed this before when the unit was in Boston. It doesn't seem to be an issue when watching anything else and the tv looks GREAT when watching Blue-Ray on my PS3

What are the chances its the cable box or cable network (I have Time Warner). I've already switched boxes and it didn't help, thought it might be a bad HDMI cable and that wasn't it either.

Any ideas on what it would be or do I just have a horrible TV?

It sounds like it's the new Time Warner source that's plugged into the plasma. Just because you switched boxes, it still doesn't rule out the quality of the actual signal from TW that's being fed into the plasma. Not sure why you're blaming the plasma when it was working fine in Boston.

A freind of mine has a 1080i Hitachi plama and it has that same problem with sports. It might be the cable company your with? My freind has comcast. It could be that your TV isn't 120hz? What shocks me is that you have that problem with a Samsung. I have a Samsung LCD 1080p 10,000:1 Dynamic contract screen that i'm useing as a computer monitor. But mine is LCD. Maybe it's a plasma thing? Sorry I could be better help.

If your not seeing any motion blur while viewing Blue-Ray then it's not your tv. It's probably your cable company and the compression they use. The more compression, the more channels they can offer. I see the same blurring on a couple of channels I get from Charter. It doesn't happen all the time, but it's easy to notice when it does.

I never even thought about the compression. Interesting. Thanks Randy T, this definitly puts me at ease. Before I switch cable providers I am going to test the tv by playing a DVD of a hockey game. If it doesn't happen, then Time Warner is out and I'm looking into FioS!

Plasma sets operate at about 480 hz ... so it isn't because it isn't 120 hz.

It's definitely in the source. I have Dish Network and OTA HD and I get motion blur and artifacting on a lot of the channels...they are just too compressed. BDs, HD-DVDs and DVDs look fine.

I am running a 50" Panny plasma.
