Upgrading Home Theater - Please help

Hi,
I am looking to upgrade my home theater setup. Right now I have a sony DAV-FX500 dvd system.

I am already out of inputs on this system and would like to upgrade.

I was thinking about the Sony DG720. I want an HDMI receiver that is at least 5.1. I will be playing Blu Rays through this device, along with cable TV and home theater PC.

I will need speakers also. I don't want it to be the loudest thing ever, since I am in an apartment (and budget is real low).

I'm looking to get this done for as cheap as possible, while still getting a nice sound. Lets say for around $800. I know it isn't much, but at this time it's what I'm looking to spend.

What would you think about this? Would it sound nice - or dead?

Maybe another receiver with better speakers - any ideas?

Thanks for the input.

That receiver has a very solid set of features for it's price point.

Here's a set of speakers I believe would outperform the set you linked to:

That set is $500 and includes 6.1 channels. You can add a 7th channel for $40.

At that budget level I think it's hard to beat the Onkyo HTS-6100 receiver/speaker package @ ~$550.

Thanks for the input.

The HTS-6100 is HDMI pass-through, which requires a separate cable for audio, correct?

Re: Upgrading Home Theater - Please help

No it has full HDMI audio processing of all current formats. The lower models are "pass-through" which I wouldn't recommend.

Okay, because I came across these speakers, and reviews seems pretty good. Onkyo SKS-HT540(B) 7.1 Channel Home Theater Speakers (SKS HT540(B)) at Vanns.com | accessories

Not expensive at all, and would prefer to spend around this amount. Not sure of the quality of the sound. Obviously not going to be blown away here, but would still like something good.
