"Boy and the Ghost"is indeed a great song, but I wasn't too impressed with the rest of the album.  I wasn't expecting it to sound like Nightwish, but something's missing in my mind. Been listening to Leaves' Eyes quite a bit, but I'm afraid to play "Vinland Saga" and "Njord" back-to-back.  I have a feeling I'd actually turn into a Viking if I did!   That's a lot of songs about longboats and "New Land"!

I wish I had time to listen to a lot more stuff.  I would if I didn't work such long hours and watch too many DVDs.  I also need to stop listening to "Black Symphony" so much...

I'm really enjoying "My Winter Storm", there's quite a few good songs on it. As for something missing, maybe the Nightwish band? :)  I didn't expect this to sound at all like Nightwish so maybe that's why it doesn't seem like anythings missing,

Oh, no, I TOTALLY expected that there would be no Nightwish influence.  I just didn't expect THAT much of a departure.  I should give it a fw more spins...haven't listened to it in a while...

Damn, I placed my order with CMDistro over a week ago, 8 days as of today. Just got an email stating that it will ship soon and, within the US could take up to 2 weeks..WTF? Very poor customer service to take that long to get 2 CDs. Doubt I'll return to them unless it's a rare must have.

CMDistro has been a bit slow lately.  It took nearly two weeks to get my last two orders (oh, how I dread my next credit card bill).  The "two week" window they give for delivery is just to cover their a**es, my last order arrived two days after the e-mail said it had been shipped.  It is also the first time I've seen that the postage needed to send my order exceeded the S&H charge...

I revisited Midnattsol's "Where Twilight Dwells" this morning.  I have to admit that after a few "spins," it has finally grown on me...

EDIT: I just remembered that I should also mention that CMDistro threw Lacuna Coil's "Karmacode" in with my order as a free gift (it said so on the sticker).  Too bad I bought it years ago.  I'm going to "re-gift" it...

Got my CD's this morning, I'm happy and at 10 days it is a bit too slow for me (I'm used to Amazon) but I'm glad it didn't take longer. Listening to Njord now, liking it a lot.

So, I was browsing over on Laser's Edge and saw this new release by a band called Diablo Swing Orchestra. I checked out a sampling of their songs on their Myspace page. What a bizarre and unusual band. They're from Sweden and I guess they can be described as a hybrid of metal, jazz, swing, rockabilly, and opera. There are two lead singers. A female soprano and a male...well not sure how to describe his vocal style. Just weird I guess.

Don't know if this is the kind of band you guys would be interested in, but I think they're excellent in a most strange and eclectic sort of way. Check them out if you're interested.

I've only heard one D.S.O song so far...they my be strange, but they definitely deserve mention!

The new Epica ("Design Your Universe") goes on sale in the US on Nov. 3rd, two weeks after the European date.  Does anyone know if there's a difference between the editions?

I have the new Epica preordered, I'm very excited.

As for Leaves' Eyes. Hmmmm, not too impressed. The music is good, the death metal is good, but the lead's voice, very soft, rangeless, and for the most part she's drowned out by the music. I do like their style but I should have given more of their stuff a listen on YouTube before buying in, as I would not have after listening to these two CD's of theirs.

Yeah, I've heard that quite a bit about Liv, but I have to admit I like her voice.  It's kinda "ethereal."  I'm still on the fence regarding her voice in a live setting...

Anyone ever seen the OFFICIAL live video of the song "Venus" she did when she was in Theatre of Tragedy?  QUITE different  from the Liv of today.  She dressed kinda fetishistic in black vinyl dresses, gloves, and boots...

I'm ordering the new Epica today...

Ron, for what it's worth, I had very similar impression of Leaves' Eyes when I first discovered them too. It took a number of listenings to their stuff before I developed an appreciation of their sound and of Liv's voice. One of those occasional instances I guess where a band just doesn't grab you at first but for some reason leaves a lasting impression eventually.

I spun them both again today, I am liking Njord the least, it's almost like one long song, not a lot of character between the songs. Vinalnd Saga is getting better the second time around, it's got a bit more life to it then Njord. It's good music, just not Epica or Nightwish good.

I see that there's a version of the new Epica that has a bonus track called "Incentive," on the CM Distro site, but it's $28.50! They do have a pretty cool CD/T-Shirt combo, too, but it's the standard edition...

I think I may be sick enough in the head to pre-order both.

The new CD is pretty phenomenal. It sounds heavier, particularly the first half, than anything they've ever done. Track 6 is a 13 minute masterpiece. There is a slow operatic power ballad that is mind-blowing. There's one song that I consider a bit of a throwaway. It has Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica doing guest vocals and it doesn't work quite as well as the rest of the songs. Other than that one song, the CD is an Epica masterpiece. I can't wait to see them on tour, even though theyr'e going to be playing small dive joints in North America.

The shirt is kinda hokey so it's not a deal worth $25 for me.  Add to that, CM takes way too long to ship and I cannot wait. Amazon will have it to me much, much faster.

Their playing the Key Club in West Hollywood in February and at $23 a ticket you can bet I'll be there.

My band t-shirt days are behind me, but it's the only Epica shirt I've seen... 

I may have to pony up the $28.50 for the bonus track...

EDIT 2: Revolver magazine just released their annual "Hottest Chicks in Metal" issue.  Although the feature is a tribute to two decades of women, Simone is nowhere to be found.  I don't care if you're a fan of the genre of symphonic metal or not (Revolver is geared toward death/emo/goth/nu metal..in other words, 75% of the bands they cover all sound the same), but Simone is one of the most beautiful women on the planet.

I can understand Maria Brink of in In This Moment being featured, and Cristina Scabbia is listed again (deservedly so), but Wendy O. Williams?  Corey Parks? The keyboard player in Bleeding Through (though she poses in Dita Von Teese-like outfits these days)?

The saving grace is that they DO feature Simone as the May pinup in their "for sale" calendar, but damn, how did she not make the cut?

Oh, and the cover gal from Halestorm (strictly average in sound) is pretty damn hot.  Then again, I'm a sucker for long legs...especially when those legs are in 6" ankle-breaking heels....  But that's just me...

P.S. Day-ummm, doesn't Cristina look HOT in the calendar or what?

After several more rounds of the Leaves' Eyes CDs I have come to enjoy them, very much. For some reason this group needed to grow on me. Thanks again for the suggestion guys. I still like Vinland Saga better then their latest Njord though.

Haha, you're HOOKED!

Glad to hear you gave Leaves' Eyes another chance. When you get "We Came with the Northern Winds" , check out the concert DVD first. It's really excellent. Their stage setup is amusingly cool.

Classical Conspiracy is also really good. The symphonic disc is kind of a novelty, but you can't beat Epica playing the Imperial March from Empire Strikes Back. Hope you got the import version. It has an extra track on the symphonic disc, which is the theme from Pirates of the Carribbean.

I just completed my entire Xandria discography.  I still can't find "Atlantis" by Lunatica, though...

The 2+ hour documentary on the Leaves' Eyes live DVD/CD package is pretty entertaining. 

I knew "The Road to Paradiso" came with a book, but I was (pleasantly) surprised at the SIZE of it, since I was expecting a CD-sized book.

I think you'll really enjoy "Dark Passion Play."  The thirteen-minute "Poet and the Pendulum" is well worth the price of admission.  I hope you got the 2-disc special edition (Instrumental versions of the entire album).

Have any of you heard the track "Fleurs du Mal" from Sarah Brightman's "Symphony" album?  It's my vote for "Best Symphonic Metal Song that Within Temptation Never Wrote":

I actually like Sarah Brightman. Even saw her a couple of time in concert over the last 10 years or so.  I agree. Every once in a while she puts out a song that just blows your socks off. Her version of "Who Wants to Live Forever" is also really good. Most of her stuff of late is sort of easy listening caliber though. Or maybe that's just me turning into a metalhead and losing interest in the slow, fluffy music.

Sarah Brightman made a serious impression on me many, many, years ago when she played Christine in "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Ahmanson here in LA. That was a show I will never forget.
