getting started help.

Hi I have been researching for months and now turn to you experts for help. I want to set up my living room for a 7.1 set up and it looks like my options have turned to a in wall in ceciling setup since I have a sliding glass door as a wall in my room and my wife does not want our baby getting into the speakers. I am trying to do all of this on a budget and like to know the best for the buck. I am using the Samsung ln46a630 as the prize of the room. I also have all three game consoles, ps3, Xbox 360, Wii, I do not have cable but a antenna. But plan on getting cable later on. The room is open and one part is mine for the TV and the other is a play area for the baby and a eating area that leads to the kitchen. I want good sound of course but also understand with how the room is open I will not get the same great sound as a movie theater. Any advice will help. Sorry for such a long post but I am trying to give as much info as possible.

Re: getting started help.

Howdy, and welcome to the zoo! errr, forums.

Our first question, and definitely the most important one is: How much do you want to spend?

I also have a giant glass wall in my viewing room, (16 foot wide slider out to the pool deck..... nice but not great for audio!) I have good bookshelf speakers all around, with the surrounds and rears hanging from the ceiling. My kid has never messed with the speakers or the rear-proj TV (oh lucky me!!!)

I'll add some more questions:

1) Why do you want 7.1 sound (over 5.1 sound)?
2) What are the dimensions of your room?
3) Besides the sliding door, are there any other openings that would block equipment placement (other doors, etc.) and where are they?
4) Is exposed cabling acceptable or are you going to need the wiring in-wall (due to the baby, etc.).

Re: getting started help.

In responce to both.

1) I want to stay some what on the lower end of the budget since I don't see myself staying here in the place I am living for more that 5 years. So maybe $2,000 on everything.

2) Like I said my wife wants everything in the walls so wires can not be seen. That is why also the in wall set up is the only option in this case for me.

3) I will measure the room this weekend to give you guys a better feel of what I am talking about. But the opening to the kitchen and the hall way that leads to the the room are other things that are concering me about the sound of the room but since it is a condo I really don't have another room to go with.

4) I kind of want 7.1 cause I am selfish I hear it is the best all around sound, But if 5.1 would be better for the room so be it that is why I post here.

I will also try to post some pictures if I can get the size right.
Once again I want I good family room that I can feel proud of when I watch the movie and the big game.
