Sound from TV to Receiver, but not PS3?

Hello:

Just purchased a Sammy A550 HDTV. Am awaiting my Fios HD box, so for now am using the standard
Motoralla 2500 STB.

Following is wiring:

HDMI cable from my PS3 to TV HDMI input.

Optical video from Opt video out on TV to Opt in on my Receiver.

(Receiver is an older JVC RX6000VBK, surround (non 5.1))

STB cable from Box to TV in.

Watching cable I get sound through the TV & the Reciever.

When running PS3, via HDMI 1 Source I get video & audio to the TV; but here is the problem:

I do not get the PS3 audio through the surround, instead I still get the cable program audio.

Why isn't the audio from the PS3 HDMI running through the TV & to the Receiver?

Isn't the Optical out from the TV always based upon the audio running through the TV?

I think I may have a bad setting on the Receiver for the selection of analog,or digital input.??

Thanks

Re: Sound from TV to Receiver, but not PS3?

You have to run PS3 audio directly to your receiver with another cable. Do the same for the HD STB when you get it.

The TV's digital out is designed primarily for output from the TV tuner. Whether audio from attached HDMI sources is relayed varies from TV to TV, sometimes it works but you only get 2.0 PCM stereo, sometimes you get nothing, and you have found in your case you still get the last valid input. TV's just aren't designed as switching hubs; the manufacturers are assuming you use the receiver as the hub, not the TV.

Thanks Steve:

My receiver only has 1 optical for the digital input, I guess I'll have to use a standard component (RCA) for one of the sources?

Steve:

I ran a seperate input (component) to a tape input on my receiver & I have audio.

Guess I need to consider upgrading my Receiver to something a little more modern.

Thanks

Re: Sound from TV to Receiver, but not PS3?

Your posts have left me a little confused as to exactly how you have things connected.

1) "Component" is not a physical type of cable. Component video uses 75 Ohm coaxial cable the terminates in an RCA connector. Component video cable connectors are color-coded: red, green and blue. 75 ohm coax is also used for digital audio and for other applications. But there is no audio application in which the word "component" would be applied to a cable.

2) I looked at the specs on your receiver, and sure enough, it appears to be a DD/DTS 5.1 digital receiver. If it weren't, it wouldn't have any digital inputs.

3) Since you have your "component" cable connected to an input marked "tape", you clearly aren't connecting to a digital input - and you should be for the best sound. Digital audio inputs (both coax and optical) are usually assignable to different video inputs, and in many cases are not paired with any video input by default, so you may need to tell the receiver which digital audio connections go with which video inputs.

Joe

Re: Sound from TV to Receiver, but not PS3?

I read it as he only has one optical in, so he is using standard analog audio for one of the components (PS3? cable box?)

In the long run, probably should use optical for PS3, digital coax RCA for the new HD cable box. Don't need optical from the TV if not using the TV's built-in tuner.
