*** Official PUSH Review Thread

I did a search and didn't see any posts for this film.

Must not be much interest in it. I saw it yesterday, either this or Taken with Liam Neeson.

I rather enjoyed it for what it was. Part of the interest was that it was filmed or appeared to be made in Hong Kong. I liked the use of the city as location and well as the Chinese actors. It gave it a freshness. Production values were great.

As to the story, based on the trailer, it felt like a big screen version of NBC's Heroes. Perhaps if it was an anime version! Each person had a specific power. And there was a government faction trying to capture and control these unique people. Plus there was an original generation of these people and the film focuses on the second generation.

Dakota Fanning was good as was Djimon Hounsou. And nice to see Ming Na get some more theatrical exposure. The rest of the cast I didn't know, except the magician guy I recognized from some other films. But that was the part I liked, I didn't know these actors.

Obviously the film makers are hoping to create a franchise here. Overall, it was a good somewhat mindless action movie experience.

edit- I see that the reviews have not been positive and some at IMDB say it has some similarities to another film called Jumpers. I didn't see that film, or too many of these types of films. So I have no reference. As I said, I thought it was a good mindless action romp when you're in that mood!

re: *** Official PUSH Review Thread

A friend and I saw it Friday. It was ok. I found myself wanting more of an ending. Also, as Nelson mentioned people thinking it was similar to Jumpers. I can agree with that. Both movies had really interesting premises. But, just seemed to fall short in the story. Certain things in both movies were really left vague.

One thing off hand. In Push the one girl who survives a drug to enhance her abilities. You really never see how much it does. Except, where she makes her attackers her defenders. While that seems special. I was more impressed with the other teleknetic bad guy who simulataniously attacked the bad guys and was able to defend hundreds of machine gun bullets from all sides. He seemed to have the suped-up abilities.

Re: *** Official PUSH Review Thread

From a decent premise (of people with certain power types, and how it gets passed on to their offspring, though some of it feels like "Heroes" in spots, I didn't mind the similarities), the film languished in the mid-section (just plain dull), and does have a lackluster conclusion with too much of it being open-ended for a story that isn't guaranteed to make it to a future installment.

I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.

Review: Push

htf_imgcache_38783.gifPush is an intriguing but unexceptional scifi thriller in dire need of a final act. Functionally, the movie plays like Minority Report crossbred with "Heroes" in the back alleys of Hong Kong. What sets it apart is a unique visual palette and editing choices that favor small character beats over blistering action sequences.

As thirteen-year-old clairvoyant Cassie Holmes explains over the opening credits, ordinary people with extraordinary abilities walk among us. Beginning with the Nazis during World War II, governments around the world have tried to weaponize these individuals. Until Kira Hudson, all of these efforts had been lethal. But Kira survived, and escaped to Hong Kong—where Cassie and telekinetic deadbeat Nick Gant are destined to find her.
