How to set up Directv DVR and Sony SXRD

Thread Starter
I just got my hd service and dvr.

Everything looks good, but a couple of the menu options confuse me.

Should I set native to on or off?

How should I set the aspect ratio? Stretch, original?

Should my SXRD be set to full or normal mode?

I guess my goal is to watch shows in their intended aspect ratio. If it's broadcast in widescreen, then I want it to pop out, if it's full screen then I want it to be full screen and not stretched.

I tried playing with it some, but I'm not entirely sure what to set it to.

It would be helpful to know what a SXRD is...

SXRD is Sony's LCoS tv. JVC's D-ILA was it's competition. Neither one is made anymore. They were what I wanted, but couldn't get one in time.

Since I never got one, I can't swear to this, but I'm thinking that if it's set to "Native", it upconverts (dvds, etc.) to 1080p, since that's it's native resolution.

From what you said, I'd say "Original".

Sorry, I don't know what full or normal modes are. The owner's manual should explain what each is.

Enjoy the HD on your SXRD. They sure have a nice picture with HD.

"Native" is a setting on his DVR. It means that the DVR outputs whatever resolution the broadcast was in rather than changing it to something else. 480i gets output as 480i, 720p as 720p, 1080i as 1080i.

TVs never have a "native" setting since they are constrained to their native resolution no matter what.

I would use "native, original". The TV aspect would probably have to change depending on whether you were watching HD or SD. There might be an aspect control on the DVR you can use as an alternative.

I think native original still messes with the picture. I will look when I get home (I have DirecTV DVR and a JVC HD-ILA). Something in me wants to say I have mine set to "pillar box". Also, I set the resolution allowed (in the DVR) to 720p, 1080i. I don't mess with 480i and my TV won't do 1080p/24.

I have mine set on Pillar box, native off since it maintains the screen ratio to what was transmitted. I couldn't tell a significant difference b/w Native on/off picture quality, but the channel change/surfing was significantly faster. The Native setting is very display sensitive however and mnay people get much better results with it on and live with the slower channel changing.

I'm pretty sure if you are inputting a HD source you want the Full setting on the TV. I don't thing normal is an option for anything coming from an HD source/input and is only meant to be used with 4:3 SD broadcasts. You may have to just try different settings to see what works with your sources.

I never did figure out Original Ratio name since it seems to stretch all 4:3 content to fit the 16:9 screen.
