Any word on The Abyss?

This is one of my favorite movies and although it has been released on DVD about 6 times in different packaging, they never got beyond a non-anamorphic version (despite what the specs say).

I'm kind of surprised this hasn't been released already. I am wondering, could it have something to do with the Director's cut? Is it HD ready or does it have the same issues as Star Trek TMP? If they do get around to it, I certainly hope it is the far superior Director's cut.

Cameron generally gets to approve the transfers on his movies* but he's always working (since 1997, he's done a few documentaries, a couple of big deep sea diving missions, a TV series, planned to go to the moon and is in the middle of a new movie) so it's hard to get him to take the time to approve them.

Check out some of the threads in the Van Ling section of the Insiders section.

* I think it's a consideration that the studio extends to him rather than a contractual obligation on their part.

Thanks for the heads up Travis! Very interesting thread, over there! Hopefully I won't have to wait forever for my favorite flick on Blu-ray!

We've never had a proper anamorphic DVD for either The Abyss or True Lies, two Cameron titles I desperately would like to have but never bought for that reason. Both of these would be day 1 purchases for me on Blu.

Which is why I never upgraded from my laserdisc. With a Blu Ray release, it would be time.

true lies was released in europe and australia in anamorphic widescreen. afaik both releases are done by universal. fox on the other hand released true lies in high-def on d-theater.

also van ling mentioned in the insider section here at htf that a special edition dvd was planned but then hold due to the events of 9/11.

at this point the best version available is the d-theater release.

Also in Japan and Korea without PAL speedup. The Japanese disc has DTS.

The Abyss has aired somewhere in HD. I recall reading about it but I can't remember where it was.

Indeed. The Japanese anamorphic DTS release of TRUE LIES is gorgeous!

Same with LAST ACTION HERO.

Add me to the list of people extremely keen to get the ABYSS in HD!

This isn't any inside info, just a suspicion, but I would expect to see a BD, and probably decent anamorphic DVD as well, of The Abyss (and maybe True Lies) released near the release of Avatar, which I believe is in December.

The "Director's Cut" was actually finished on film and given some theatrical playdates back in the early 1990s. I saw it projected in NYC and it looked great, except for the "tidal wave" sequence which was swimming with massive grain. I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to clean that up a bit for a Blu-ray release (the tidal wave scene looked a lot cleaner on LaserDisc and DVD).

yeah..we've only been waiting a decade for proper versions of The Abyss and True Lies. He's got time to cameo on Entourage, you think he'd spend a few hours to review the master and make sure the best possible versions of his films can be seen by his fans..

My non-anamorphic DVD's are almost totally unwatchable on my HT.

Yeah, I'm sure he's just as concerned with how his cameo on ENTOURAGE turned out as he is with how his own films look at home in High-Definition...

Never been a fan of all these 'when is this title coming' threads.
(nothing personal)
However, was thinking of this title recently as well (& glad people are mentioning: 'give us a GREAT "TL"', as well), as its something I could watch every wk (& "Contact" [where's THAT!! ha, ha]).
So I'd like this thread too help inform me, rather than just tease me.

How many cuts are there? I know of two; like both, prefer the longer cut.
Could this release be as GREAT as "CEot3rdK" & "BR"?
The SD DVD had EE; what's the chance this title in HD is EE & DNR free?
Any chance of a 6.1 soundtrack? Isolated score? Lossless?

Hopefully this thread could turn into something of what we'd like too see this release be; instead of just "when" will this release be.

There are only two cuts I know of, the theatrical cut and the director's cut. So both should (and probably will) be included. A new retrospective documentary would be nice, along with some other featurettes about the special effects. And a commentary track.
Of course you could redo all the bonus material just to have it in HD, but that doesn't make sense to me if the previous extra's are already very good, like the making of documentary is.
I really love this movie. I think it was always a bit underrated compared to the Terminator films and Aliens, but it stands up pretty well between them. Funny, James Cameron compared this to 2001: A Space Odyssey under water, but it looks more like Close Encounters of the Third Kind under water to me.

I am also a fan of this classic movie. I saw both versions in the theatre. its my all time favorite movie, even over some popular comic book movies. I hope that someday we get a proper HD version of it. I am thinking that it will be later this year or sometime next year.

That was the same one as the doc on the dvd, I guess? It was excellent, but a featurette (or something a bit longer) with the people looking back on the film and the response it had might be interesting added to the making of.

when they released the abyss on laser disc around 1992/1993. they also sent two prints out in limited release.. it took a while, but it did come to sacramento and played for a while. i went on opening night for the longer cut.

Indeed Abyss has two cuts, the Theatrical Cut and the Special Edition. The Special Edition was done on film and this makes me worried for the Theatrical Cut. If they release only the Special Edition on BD, it would be a no sale for me. I want the Theatrical Cut.
