Slow Cable Internet...help

hi guys

I have grown quite tired of my ISP. It is a very local cable company called BeeLine. I am paying for 4 m/s download speed, and I do not get it. At the best of times it is 2.5-3.

At the worst of times...ANY DAY AFTER 3-330 pm...my speeds dwindle down to a unusable 206, 835, 465, 441, etc...the worst part about this is the extended ping times.

Anything I can do about this? I have a call out to them. Suggestions for me to do? Suggestions for them to do?

thanks!

Re: Slow Cable Internet...help

Not much you can do except call them and have a technician come out. Sounds like that have an old and not properly designed network if you are seeing performance drops of that magnitude.

The cable tech will probably check the signal strength on your coax. Are you running many splitters?

Have you tried bypassing your router (connect your PC directly to the cable modem)? This probably wouldn't make any difference but if it does then you may have something fishy with your router.

Re: Slow Cable Internet...help

May not help much, but a few years ago my TWC service was doing something similar with significantly degraded performance anytime after noon, but would often work fine in the 10pm to 6am time. It eventually got so bad my old dialup was faster and I often couldn't even log onto my email due to constant timeouts.

The Tech came out twice -- first time in the morning, checked things, and couldn't find anything. The second time in the afternoon and found terrible signal/noise problems on his meter. After checking at the computer, the outside houtse box, and the distribution point across the road they determined that I had a bad line connecting my house to the distribution point. Dug up the old line, and found some damage/rot (probably an animal chewed into the insulation) and replaced the line. Everything back to normal.

Only thing they could figure was that when the Summer sun heated the ground it caused enough shift in the cable that it was shorting the system. It never seemed to affect the Cable TV picture though, just the internet which I guess is much more sensitive to noise.

Re: Slow Cable Internet...help

If things don't improve you have a couple of options. Maybe you could look into wireless internet service via your cell phone carrier. You can usually get DSL-like speeds.

Or if you want to pay the money you could check into getting a dedicated business line such as a T-1 or fractional T-1. It'll cost money but you may be able to work it in as a business expense. ISDN may be another option. Check with your any phone/ISP providers in your area. Speakeasy is great but pricey. There could be some smaller outfits in the area that may be able to help you.

Re: Slow Cable Internet...help

I think it can be problem of earthing as to why you are facing this problem. Firstly you need to contact your ISP techis and get them the things very clear. The speed you get is not high enough and there is always some loss of speed and you do not get exactly what it shows.

At last if the problem exists then you can break away the contract if you do not need to pay anything extra
