Question About DTS & The PS3

Thread Starter
Hi everybody, for my first post here I have a question I need answered ASAP. I'm a college student without much money that's about to move into the HD era. I just purchased a new 32'' lcd (on sale of course) and I got a PS3 last Christmas. Anyway, I'm about to jump into the Blu-Ray waters, but I just remembered that my few years old 5.1 receiver (from an HTIB) doesn't decode DTS (only DD5.1 and PLII).

I know that the PS3 internally decodes DTS, but can my receiver output the bitstream sent to it by the PS3 and give me full 5.1 sound? Or would I have to have the PS3 send it as PCM? I only have an toslink optical hookup by the way. If I had to send PCM, would it then be limited to 2-channels of audio? I realize that I don't yet have what is needed for HD-audio, but with so many Blu-Ray movies coming with only DTS 5.1 (just about anything made by Universal for example) I would really like to be sure if I HAVE to buy a new receiver or not.

Re: Question About DTS & The PS3

+ 1 on this question - Looking for the same thing.

I am looking to upgrade my receiver to take advantage of the various audio options. I will be using my PS3 exclusively. So I am not concerned with the number of HDMI inputs etc... just a quality receiver that can properly decode the PCM via HDMI. I thought the Onkyo SR606 was a good choice but I do not know if it will decode multichan PCM.

Re: Question About DTS & The PS3

The PS3 decodes the new formats and outputs them LPCM. To do that it needs to go through the HDMI cord. If you send it out through the optical cable it down converts it. There is a really good faq on another forum for the PS3 and how to make it work for Blu-Ray.

As I understand it, The new formats are too large to send through your optical cable. And the PS3 can only send the new formats through the HDMI, it does not have a 7.1 channel output to send the new formats like some other Blu-Ray players do.
