New iMac's likely soon

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Now if 10.6 would come out too, I can upgrade my wife's computer.

But weren't there "shortages" on something last year and the alleged refresh was months afterwards. It seems these shortages are sometimes just low stock.

It might also be reduction of inventory in the face of a poor economy.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

In addition to the inventory warning, Intel has recently released a lower power quad core processor.

AnandTech: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S: A New 65W Quad-Core

Magic eight ball says all signs point to "yes."

Re: New iMac's likely soon

An iMac refresh (not redesign) is overdue. We all know it's coming, but when, and in what form?? This article on AppleInsider from last week posits that Apple still had not decided whether to go quad-core on the iMacs or not.

My current iMac is getting a little long in the tooth. I'm primed to order a 24" quad-core model as soon as it's available. However, if they skip the quad-core this next refresh I can wait.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

The question is will they come out with larger iMacs, like a 30" model? My guess would be no (rumors of a 28" iMac notwithstanding) because even the 30" ACD refresh hasn't yet materialized. Where are those Display Port ACDs, Apple?

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Do the iMacs support dual monitors with an external monitor?

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Yes, it supports both "extended desktop" and "mirroring".

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Mac Pro may also see a facelift as well. I am getting notices from
some of the online Mac retailers about price reductions in the Mac Pro
line.

It's going to be an expensive year as I would certainly buy a new
Mac Pro and Macbook Pro (15") if they offered substantial revisions.

Yeah, more likely an intended reduction of the inventory.

I'd guess no, too. A 30" iMac would cost about $3000, and so far Apple's iMac line has been well under $3k. The iMac line alrady has the most baseline choices with four; adding a 30" further complicates the choices which Apple clearly wants streamlined. And 20" monitors are still very popular and a good size; so it's too early to drop that for say a 24" & 28" lineup.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

They could opt for a 22" and maybe 25"-28" model to replace the current sizes. There is certainly no problem with availability of such panels.

If they did that, it would open up a little room for a lower end model with a 19" panel coming in under the current low end price. This might help sales in our current economy.

Apple doesn't do low cost =)

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Speaking of low cost Macrumors has a purported Mac Mini picture with a FW800 & dual video out (Mini Display Port/Mini DVI), 5 USBs. Hope it's true, and that there is at least BTO a relatively fast processor. Blu-ray -- not likely to put it mildly.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

That and they also killed off the 20" cinema Display. I'd be shocked if there isn't at least some news early next week.

FWIW, the guy who originally posted the MacMini photo on Macrumors is claiming mid March updates.

The question also is if Apple will have a special event or just silently release everything. My money is on a special event, which means 10+ days lead-time for press invites.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

I don't think so. They'd need real feature changes to have a special event and these merely look like evolutionary upgrades to me.

Agreed. I'm betting they also introduce something totally new -- be it display related or otherwise. If they just bump the iMac & Minis, no event.

Also Intel is suing NVIDIA, over the chip set allegedly in the new iMacs/MacPros -- so that may throw a wrench in the works.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

It's rare that their financial conference calls have much product info in them, but since this will be the first one sans Jobs, tomorrow should be interesting.

Also, Safari 4 is now available to download and sounds pretty cool:
Apple Safari 4 Beta Available Now: Chrome-y Top Sites, Cover Flow and Nitro

I don't see it getting me away from Firefox tho.

Until Safari has extensions (add-ons), I'm sticking with Firefox. A few key add-ons make a world of difference.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Safari 4 has a lot of new bells and whistles and is definitely faster, but since the beta overwrites Safari 3, I'll only install it on a test machine.

New iMacs & Mini's in 3 weeks?? Rumors of a March 24 desktop hardware event are now making the rounds.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

New iMacs & Minis tomorrow?? Now rumors (including SKUs) are flying that we'll see a refresh of both lines tomorrow. Unfortunately, the specs are underwhelming - no quad cores in the iMacs.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

The only mystery -- assuming the multiple rumors to be true -- is the processor speed of the high end Mini. If it is in the 2.5 GHz range, that will be one sweet machine.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Thinking about getting my feet wet with a Mini. Perhaps I'll wait to see the full line update.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Well, something's happening today - Apple Store is down.

Re: New iMac's likely soon

Yup, Apple store down. Will there be a press conference that will
covered live anywhere?

Re: New iMac's likely soon

I don't think there's any chance of a a press conference forthcoming. Any new products will just appear and a standard issue press release will be available on Apple's web site.

No, if there was an Apple Event, we'd know about it in advance. They are just releasing the updates.

I sure hope there will be a BTO option for the MacMini with a higher than 2.0 GHz. It is so tantalizingly close to being perfect otherwise.
