Star Trek The Next Generation returns to broadcast syndication - Page 2

Re: Star Trek The Next Generation returns to broadcast syndication

Although I haven't read them, the DS9 follow-up books were supposed to have a story about Jake attempting to bring him back.

The idea of a quest of sorts to bring him back could work as a possible story, kind of like a "Search For Sisko" only without Christopher Lloyd as a lame Klingon.

Granted, it can be rebuilt but I seem to remember the set being quite expensive back in the day. Of course everything is more expensive now...but...I dunno...it just wouldn't be the same to me. They'd undoubtedly change colors, locations and looks for a new (real) century.

Besides, I like to think of DS9 as a little "secret" not many people stuck with or truly appreciate. Any kind of big movie would put a focus on the series and let the cat out of the bag.

Oh, and the only way you would be first in line for a DS9 film would be if you stabbed me in the back and stepped over me, because I'd be in front of you!

Okay, we'll be the first two in line then!

That's understandable.

Re: Star Trek The Next Generation returns to broadcast syndication

I feel the same way.

And that, unfortunately, is why the show will never see an HD remaster.

The fact that TNG is being re-distributed as is, without any sort of restoration/enhancement done makes the prospects of that show never getting the TOS treatment, and since DS9 remains the least popular (even though it's the BEST ONE, DAMMIT ) the chances of it being enhanced or anything of the sort are about zero.

Even after all these years, I guess DS9 still just isn't 'Trek' enough.

And that is just a freakin' shame!

Why is Spike not showing this show anymore?

If you recall, there was a report about a year and a half ago where CBS Digital had done some testing to remaster the TNG episodes. There was no updates I am aware of since that report.

I found the news story here: CBS Testing Remastering TNG in HD | TrekMovie.com

I suppose at this point the easiest thing to do would be to professionally upscale them. I mean if anyone with an upconverting DVD player could see that there is an improvement when viewing a show like this in that way, then having that done professionally would probably produce pretty good results.

Lame!? Kruge was pretty damn ruthless even by Klingon standards. He blew up that civilian ship with his wife still aboard! (Guess she shouldn't have peeked at the Genesis tape.) Not to mention vaporizing members of his bridge crew when they screwed up.
Although he did sound a bit too much like Reverend Jim Ignatowski at times.

This would be very cool. I hope they do go ahead with this. Currently the transfers are pretty washed out and lack definition. If they could do a true HD restoration from the original film elements... wow!

Re: Star Trek The Next Generation returns to broadcast syndication

Seeing a lot of TNG references in advance of the new movie. Time's article on the movie has a long intro on the TNG episode "Cause & Effect," for example, and Sci-Fi is running TNG marathons, etc. I wonder if the success of the movie (which seems inevitable) will spark any new TNG projects? Personally, I hope it does, as well as a DS9 project or two. Would love to see a DS9 "return of Sisko" movie - maybe direct to DVD (Battlestar has proved that this is viable.)

A DS9 movie (perhaps even theatrical) would be great. What would be best is another series

Re: Star Trek The Next Generation returns to broadcast syndication

Ya know, Paul, I've always thought a Trek anthology series would be a really interesting concept. One episode could be set on Romulus and follow Romulan politics while the next could be a Starfleet adventure in the 22nd century, and so on. That would allow a great number of high profile actors to be a part of the show without committing to an entire series.

Think of the possibilities: Starfleet Academy, Borg, Delta Quadrant, untold stories of the Dominion War, an examination of the Tholians. If, as an audience member, you didn't like that particular episode or character, wait until next week when the entire cast changes.

I wish someone had the cajones to do that.

Re: Star Trek The Next Generation returns to broadcast syndication

It's hard to believe it's been over twenty years since this show was originally broadcast.

I have to admit, I haven't given it much thought since it's original run ended, but I was a big fan of season 3-5 when it first aired.

Looking back, does it seem that this show hasn't stood the test of time very well?

Whereas TOS seems timeless and classic to this day, with many episodes standing up well to repeat viewing - I've had a hard time going back and watching TNG. I'll take another look come fall.

Re: Star Trek The Next Generation returns to broadcast syndication

I have been watching TNG on DVD lately (even reviewed the 'best of' that was just released), but this show manages to be relevant and entertaining just as much today. Season's one and two aesthetically haven't aged quite so well, but there are terrific stories (Measure of a Man, for instance) even in season two.

I am coming to the end of season four, getting ready to get into the Redemption two-parter and am enjoying it thoroughly.

Re: Star Trek The Next Generation returns to broadcast syndication

I felt as though Seasons 3 through 6 were *outstanding*; and (mostly) hold up well today ... With one caveat: On a HDTV these episodes look *terrible* compared to the TOS "Remasters". Of course, the show was shot on film and then the 480i SFX shots were composited to video; so that's the reason the transfers exhibit so many artifacts and look so soft. So there's probably not much that can be done about that. But other than the unfortunate visuals, TNG remains a very entertaining example of "anthology" Trek. (Just skip most of Season One except for "Conspiracy".)
