Laserdisc isn't dead, it's back again with a vengeance if you ask me.
Several collector's popping up nearby. As the lddb says, Buying today what we couldn't afford then.

I still have my collection of Ld's

I never new there was a 3-d version of the Mask.
I have a special edition that I think is just a greenish cover.
the sound on that is still better then the dvd, i havent picked it up on blu yet.

the sound on that and the japanese Phantom Menace laser
is still much better then the dvd's of each.

I also have that Mad World laser and the Jaws signature laser with the book, and at the time the only way to see the full doc.

I rarely look at them anymore as they look
super awful on my 73" through s-vid.

I just remembered i think i have a red disc of one of the Evil Dead movies.

Yes I agree with you Kris, I also think Laserdisc is making a bit of a come back. Colectors seem to be hunting out those special titles with the extras not available anywhere else.

Tony. After so many years I have located another LD of The Mask (1961) in 3D so you will guess I am made up as we say. Some of my film friends have also recently purchased Pioneer players so we seem to have a good little group here now. It will be nice to compare the quality to the off air recording Dad did a few years ago to the Laserdisc.

"Put the mask on now"

If you would like to make some Mask 3D glasses hereis the link to my print and cut image. Remove the lens area and insert your own lenses.

Hey, how did I overlook this topic? I'm still collecting laserdiscs concurrently with DVD and Blu-ray. My LD collection more than doubled in size last year thanks to an HTFer who was willing to ship his entire collection across the country to me at an attractive price. Most of the amount paid went to the shipping bill. Amazingly, there was not so much duplication in the titles I already had on LD or DVD, and so my family is enjoying watching all those great movies. Another HTFer (he's participating in this thread) has sold me some fine anime on LD. Still another HTF member sold me my second Mitsubishi M-V7057 LD player (clone of the venerable Pioneer CLD-D704), and yet another was responsible for equipping me with an AC3 RF demodulator at long last.

Academy ratio movies on LD, especially, still hold their own when displayed on my 100-inch 4:3 projection screen. I enjoy, too, having access to all the bonus-feature content that never got transferred to the DVD format (got those banned 007 commentaries from Criterion, for example), and the covers are a joy to look at and to handle. It's great to pay pennies on the dollar for LD special editions I couldn't afford back in the day. That's why my LD collection is still growing faster than the slow, but steady clip that my Blu-ray collection is experiencing.

I'm only 19 years old and I just got into LD not too long ago. I already have over 100 LDs, a Japanese LD player with a RD demodulator which I got it for cheap.

I'm pretty happy with it. Watching Face/Off in Dolby Digital gave me a big smile when watching the boat chase part of the movie.

Hey Jonathan, now I feel older... I was just a little older than you when I started in Laserdiscs and not so far off 50 now.

Good to see your pictures and I will post mine shortly. We completed getting the monitor on the wall recently and it took some fitting as my wife is only 5ft and a bit. In the end its on the wall (the monitor that is) and the rest is making the unit I want the kit to fit into. At present my LD is put away awaiting its new home but we should be up and running in a couple of days.

As many have said before, using LD these days is much better than it was in the 80's and everything is much cheaper thanks to the bluray folk. It's nice to now own many of the titles I wanted to have when my family was young and we were starting out in life..

Well, we had one hell of a Laserdisc show last night watching disc after disc and my Pioneer had a bit of a shock I think watching so many. I decided to give all my discs a clean which took 2 days, yes 2 days folks and we wound up watching Hammer classics and last up was a Disney. Some combination eigh.

Yes there was a bit of a story behind that FS200. I used to have a Panasonic FS90 along with another film making friend of mine. We were giving a presentation of the films we had made with them and he dropped his on the way out of the theatre. OUCH! Picking up the pieces it later got written off and the insurance company presented him with a FS200 which was a later model then. Sadly my friend passed away a couple of years ago and his family knowing the story gave the FS200 to me which was very thoughtful. I wanted to get the 200 as it had the time base corrector built in and it does come in handy for putting my older Super VHS recordings onto DVD as a backup copy. Nice bit of kit and one of my little keep sakes from which I still remember that FS90 hitting the deck.

We watched a couple of Laserdiscs last night and I thought the picture quality and sound was quite outstanding on this 50” Plasma. The Laser collection is still growing although these days I am very selective what I go for. I picked up Pete Kelly’s Blues (1955) over the weekend and thought this was a smashing film starring Janet Leigh, Jack Webb and Ella Fitzgerald. Although the disc was vintage and produced in the early part of the 80’s it ran very well and was a superb movie having a great musical score in Stereo.

I just scored a Pioneer Cld-3080 last week. Was so happy. I put in my copy of The Godfather Trilogy and just watch. Brought back so many memories. This was the format where I truly discovered film.

...yes, often is a joy to pick up a movie watched a long time ago, put in your favourite laserdisc player, and, apart seeing the movie itself, remember all the memories that very movie brings with it...

I miss the grandeur of receiving a big deluxe Laserdisc boxset, the Se7en's and Terminator 2's just have that feeling of something special that dvd or brd cannot replicate

I have been in love with laser discs ever since I got my first disc in the mail back in 2005.
The sheer joy of opening that box anbd seeing a record sized box with amazing art work made me remember Christmas day and opening Gifts.
consumers thought.
Nowadays seeing some of the artwork they put out feels so cold uncaring.
I spent the summer of 2005 searching out my discs one by one.
Many hours and many dollars were spent.
I then got my first laser disc player for the amazing price of 30 bucks shipped
it's a Sony MDP-600 not sure how it rates but to me I cherish it like some lost treasure.
Now the ld's I bought were mainly Japanese releases Ultra 7 (tv series) Kamen rider x(tv series)

I would love to get a database full of laser disc covers started because everyone needs to see how Disc art and packaging should be.

Demon summoner(tv series)
Godzilla Gamera etc...
I also found I really loved watching horror on ld
Like The sleeping car
Phantom of the mall
Vineyard.
Watching lasers made me feel young again made me feel like I was at the movies sneaking into my first R rated movie.
I keep my collection locked up it my old teenage mutant turtles box(fits ld's perfectly.)
I am still searching out Japanese laser discs to this date.
To me this format will never die.

Yup those were the days of great artwork and quality products. One shop I have visited has covered its walls with laser artwork, but I cant help wondering what has become of the discs?

I'm in the same boat with a DVL-700 (w/remote and manual) and around 400 LDs, quite a few unopened.

A lot of animation, serials, sci-fi, horror, lots of box sets, almost all CAV, some signed...a pretty good collection.

I've been on the fence for a while now. I've spent the past 8(?) years trying to eliminate VHS in favor of DVD. I'm down to about 70 tapes, but I find myself with a lot of movies that have no DVD release anywhere in the world. Some of these have LD releases, but I haven't been able to bring myself to really look for an LD player. They're bloody expensive and my only real purpose for one would be dubbing whatever LDs I get to DVDR for watching on a regular basis. I don't know how much better the LDs would look than the tapes anyway. I don't understand why there still isn't any solution to this, whether it be downloadable versions of the movies or a burn on demand service offered by the studios. These movies shouldn't be forgotten.

I own the Poineer LDW1 laserdisc plaver and about 600 laserdiscs.
Up until discovering this forum, I was going to get rid of them all. After reading these posts, I have reconsidered.
Now I want someone to tell me where I can send my LD player to get overhauled since it's been shelved for years. It still plays, but the dual tray mechanism doesn't work properly.
Suggestions welcomed.

I gave a pile to a lady at work since she mentioned she had a LD player and still fired it up.  I had to renege on some titles since I started to look them over and loved the artwork and liner notes.  Plus I paid a king's ransom for them in the day.  It did revive my wanting to put my LD player back into my system and a new TV in the bedroom made that possible again.  Hooked it up and it wouldn't play (it had been in storage) so I'm in EPIC's boat.  Been looking at used players on Ebay though.  ;)

I sold all my 335+ LDs and the DVL-700 last month. I was sorry to let them go, so many were never even opened. But, it was time to move on and I'm enjoying my BDs, HDDVDs and my HD TV programs.
