IMHO, Russell, there was not a clunker at all in the Best Supporting Actor category in the four films I saw.

Mr. Heath, Philip, Michael and Josh all gave strong performances to me. And Philip, IMHO, gave a very strong performance--particularly in his faceoff with Miss Meryl--in Doubt. Michael was all that he was in Revelutionary Road, taking the film away from Leo and Kate IMHO during their scenes together. And Josh...oh, GOSH!!!!!!

I wanted Downey Jr to win but it was still sad seeing Heath's parents pick up the award.

I don't know what "tallent" is, but Ledger did win his award based on his TALENT.

14 down, 10 more awards to go.

It was a strong catagory, I honestly don't think Heath would of got it if he hadn't died. We'll never know. I honestly wasn't impressed with him as much as I was with Aaron Eckhart in TDK, he had a lot less required of him as HArvey Dent, and stole every scene.

But now the Ledger masses get the cherry on their ice cream sunday! A fine hollywood story it is! :p

Oh no! I knock at my sloppy typing! Tsk tsk! Now Nick, would David Boreanz been your fave if he was up against your beloved Ledger?

I agree. The right man won this one, although I think Hoffman should have been nominated for Best Actor, not Best Supporting, for his role in Doubt.

I think Bill Maher is the only person who inspires loathing in me on sight. It's that mix of smug self-righteousness and condescension that drives me up the wall, regardless of whether I agree with him or not.

I agree, I thought Eckhart was great. I thought that Oldman was terrific as well. Someone who truly had tremendous range.

Are they having song performances this year? All I really wanted to see was Peter Gabriel performing "Down to Earth"

re: Official 2009 Oscar Discussion

You actually have a salient point regarding Eckhart, Russell. He did manage to give his character something of a depressingly tragic edge once the transformation was made from Harvey Dent to Two-Face.

I disagree that Ledger's performance was'nt mesmerizing, although I do agree that Eckert's performance was largely ignored and was very very good.

re: Official 2009 Oscar Discussion

Good picks for Slummydogz on these 2. Nice to see Jerry Lewis get his due pretty soon. He revolutionized the way movies are made! Finally the French will get some respect from the snoots for loving him so much! XD

I think Eckhart's chances were really hurt by the CG for Two-Face. It was not believable and very distracting.

I don't think any of those three films could have been considered robbed if one of the others had one. Three extraordinary visual effects achievements, each with a unique set of challenges. The absolute right set of nominees this year.

As happy as I am for the TDK recognition, no film depended more on its sound than Wall-E. Ben Burtt got robbed for his extraordinary achievement.

If Benjamin Button had won film editing, I would have had to through something through my TV. Talk about a film in NEED of editing. I wll say that no director seems as genuinely happy when his technical people win as Danny Boyle.

Hahaha. I know exactly what you mean.

Thank god that Heath Ledger won so the thread won't be dominated with the outrage of Batman fans.

I thought he pulled out because they wanted only a medley of the nominated songs, and that they were trying to pare down the ceremony.

But they've added so many pointless segments instead. Really bad this year.

I'm loving it this year!

Look how great Lewis looks! Love the guy!

re: Official 2009 Oscar Discussion

I agree, Jerry Lewis looks terrific. He must be on a different mix of medication, because his water bloat is gone. He looks like he did in the classic days, only older.
If anyone deserves that award, it's him. No celebrity has so devoted himself to tackling a cause.

re: Official 2009 Oscar Discussion

I applaud Jerry Lewis for his humanitarianism, but watching the clips from his films, it struck me: I've never laughed at a single thing he's ever done.
