I currently have a Yamaha HTR 5240 that's approximately 8 years old. I running JBL S310 main speakers with JBL S series Center. I'm considering ugrading my receiver. I was thiinking one of the Onkyo amps. What else should I be looking at. Also, will I notice any sound differences with a new reciever? Is the upgrade worth it?

Re: Receiver for $500 or under?

The current Onkyo's offer the most features at a reasonable cost. For a bit more, you can look at Denon, Pioneer, and others. The current Yamaha's are decent as well (if you want to stick to the same brand).

The biggest difference in modern AVRs HDMI. If you plan to get any device with HDMI (Blu-Ray, HD Cable/Sat), then upgrading may be worth it.
