Re: MGM Press Release: Never Say Never Again (DVD/Blu-ray)

Given the title of the film, I would not have called it "his final 007 performance" as long as he is alive, even if he is retired.

Regards,

Re: MGM Press Release: Never Say Never Again (DVD/Blu-ray)

I see the studio has timed this release to come out on BD at the same time as the next wave of "official" 007 BD restorations. Wouldn't it be interesting if they released this on the same date as the Octopussy BD? It would be the summer of 1983 all over again with a Connery Bond being released at the same time as a Moore Bond.

BTW, I liked Octopussy in 1983 better than I liked Never Say Never Again.
In hindsight more than 25 years later, I think now that Never Say Never Again is the better of the two films. I acknowledge this opinion is not shared universally, however. I will definitely look forward to seeing both of them on BD in the future.

I agree with Ken on this point, especially since Sean Connery recorded new dialogue for the From Russia With Love videogame released several years ago. Technically, the videogame is his final 007 role to date.

... and remember as EVERY full James Bond collections still does NOT included this TITLE --- > have to buy it on BluRay

hope MGM use the original 134 min. cut to retorization of this film from the 2.20:1 ratio negative !

We wait it

Re: MGM Press Release: Never Say Never Again (DVD/Blu-ray)

Although Moore looked a lot worse in his last outing as 007, this very 80s remake of Thunderball was nowhere near as good as the original. Not to mention an ageing Connery with a young Basinger just didn't mesh for me.

Re: MGM Press Release: Never Say Never Again (DVD/Blu-ray)

I agree that Never Say Never Again pales in comparison to Thunderball.

NSNA was nowhere near as good as "Thunderball", but it was still better than most of Roger Moore's output.

My main (and, really, only) problem with NSNA vs. Octopussy was the lack of the "Bond Music". We supposedly had Connery back as Bond, but without the 007 Theme ramping up at least once during the course of the film it was difficult for me to believe that I was viewing a real Bond movie. (And, of course, Octopussy *had* the Bond music.)

The absence of the Bond theme in Never Say Never Again had the same effect on me. John Barry returned to score Octopussy and I have always enjoyed his original score for that film, and the inclusion of the original Bond theme did not hurt either.

Absolutely. The other missing small touch being the opening gun barrel, and the 007 logo as well.

I had a similar problem with QoS as well, doesn't use the Bond theme enough -- indeed, it barely does at all.

Re: MGM Press Release: Never Say Never Again (DVD/Blu-ray)

The James Bond Theme we all know and love belongs to Eon Productions and could not be used by the rival company that produced Never Say Never Again. The decades-long legal wrangle over the rights to Thunderball and its "unauthorized" remake is documented in The Battle For Bond by Robert Sellers. Fascinating read.

The score by Michel Legrand is dry and subdued, more suitable for a French romantic drama than an action film. It's not an action score, and it doesn't attempt to evoke the dynamic world of James Bond. Never Say Never Again would be a stronger film with a different score. Love the cinematography by Douglas Slocombe; it almost looks line an Indiana Jones film.

In any case I really enjoy the film and welcome the new Special Edition.

It figures that they would wait until just after I finally gave up hope and bought the bare bones disc to announce this

Re: MGM Press Release: Never Say Never Again (DVD/Blu-ray)

I do agree the music was too low key for a action show but I think in many respects it is better than Thunderball.

The cast is outstanding. Klaus Maria Brandauer is a huge improvement as Largo. Barbara Carrera more than holds her own and Bernie Casey is excellent as Felix Lieter. Max Von Sydow as Blofeld unfortunately doesn't have much to do but he does have a presence. And of course, Blofeld has his white cat.

Also the script does an excellent job of capturing the Sean Connery Bond. I love the Connery quips like "you could be served in a teacup". Or a scene when Fatima plants a bomb in Bond's room when he's doing it with a girl. You see the explosion but it turns out they are in her room. The girl wants to know what that was but Connery is unphased and goes on with what they were doing. Nobody does it better than Sean Connery. Live and Let Die was a film that felt like it was written for Sean Connery and it fell flat with Roger Moore.

It's a shame that Connery won't do any commentaries for his James Bond films. I hoped when he did the work for the videogame From Russia With Love that he might be more open to it. That would really be an ultimate edition.

Talented screenplay man Tom Mankiewicz gives the impression he wrote it with Connery in mind, in a DVD bonus features, as he presented it to him to try entice him into doing one more.

Sean than gave him that famous "I've always wanted 3 things....I have 2 things" speech.
