Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon - Page 4

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I was in CC the other night and saw the TV I bought, marked down, open box, was still about $250 more than I paid at amazon, new and sealed. (Samsung 67A750) There were NO blu ray players or PS3s left.
A lot of the smaller specialty stores have as good or better prices than CC or BB, and far superior knowledge and customer service.
The last time you were at BB looking for help, how long were you standing around waiting to be acknowledged?

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Best Buy won't possibly fold until this time next year, and that is doubtful. Xmas is everything to retailers, that's why so many go bankrupt or have cuts right after Xmas. BB will definitely make it to next Xmas, after that who knows? I think they will do some trimming of headcount, close a couple stores, and be OK. Circuit City being gone is nothing but good for BB in the long run, people still gotta buy DVDs and HDTVs somewhere.

Some here at work had indicated that years ago before they fired the quality salesman for cheaper salaried salesman, they were pretty knowledgeable. Is that true if you know?

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Keep in mind that Circuit City's demise actually increases the chances that Best Buy will survive as a b&m concern.

Agreed. We have an excellent home theater store in my town with a single location. They have much better quality products & prices are very competitive. Customer service & knowledge run rings around the big box stores.

I'm wondering if the whole concept of "big box" isn't just becoming worn out. Are Americans going to grow tired of this in this new economy and shop smaller?

Perhaps these places fail because they try to be so big, and stock everything and have tons of people and square footage.

Sometimes when you don't have as much, when you knock the glass over, its a lot easier to clean up. Compared to the big box guys who spill stuff everywhere.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

There is nothing inherent in "big box" marketing that consumers would "become worn out" about, except for things that would result in higher price (i.e., more personal, knowledgeable service), which consumers already "became worn out" about.

Fine, you wrote "the only way it makes sense for business." That's still different from "long-term competitive advantage." Of course, I'm still waiting for any evidence that either statement is true.

Actually, I notice that you misquoted yourself. You wrote "there is no advantage to them in doing so" and later qualified that as "no long-term competitive advantage."

Nope. Maybe the more informed consumer will go to a specialty store where most or all of the people working there have a real knowledge of their products but Wal Mart, Target and Best Buy will still have people who just go in and buy what they see and believe everything that the salesman tells them.

If you believe that then you and I either aren't speaking the same language, or we have radically different understandings of the nature of business.

Holy cow, that's arrogant. How's about this: You get to determine what you say, and I get to determine what I say. If I need help saying what I want to say, I'll ask you. Thanks.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

OK, let's forget the semantics and back up a bit. Tell me why you think the following is not a reasonable business strategy:

Price-matching is a way for a store to sell an item at more than one price. Selling something for $20 and matching a competitor's $15 price for some customers is not the same thing as selling it to everyone for $15. The advantage is the ability to charge $20 to customers who don't ask for the price match -- it's competing on price for the customers who care about price and competing in other ways for the others.

And looks how Walmart has flourished with this strategy! That's why Walmart, with VERY few exceptions, advertises a price in their ads (and why they run very few Sunday circulars). Go to a Walmart that has little competition and check the prices on a few items, then check a store that has LOTS of competition near it; the second store will have the lower prices.

And what you're seeing is a business crafting its own pricing policy instead of having it dictated onto them by a competitor.

I just wish there was a way to more clearly pin this tragedy on DIVX =)

Actually, I think that is an easy one.

As the DIVX debacle made clear, CC did not, and apparently does not, understand their customers. You can't stay in business long if you don't understand the market.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I was shopping in two CC stores yesterday, looking for a wireless router. The discounts varied between the two stores. For example, Game Accessories at Newport Beach were 30%, while Huntington Beach was only 10%.

Anyway, I ended up going to Fry's and paying nearly HALF of what CC's "Going Out Of Business" price was for the same model.

If you can't even come close to the competition's pricing during a liquidation sale, something is definitely wrong.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I was there today. Its still 10% here. Things are flying out the door people are just plain dumb. There are no deals there yet.

You do realize that Walmart's pricing policy includes price-matching, right?

The individual CC stores (and website inventory) were split up amongst a few different liquidators. The Newport and Huntington stores are probably owned and operated by different companies now, so they don't have any connection in terms of pricing or policies.

Actually the liquidators are very smart. They know that there are unsavvy customers out there who will grab up stuff marked 10-20% off retail and think they are getting a bargain. Once they have milked that crowd, they will start some serious liquidation. Can you blame them? Their job is to get the most $ possible out of the merchandise.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I just got a Sony boombox that usually sells @ $85 + shipping for $53 shipped. I'm happy with that. The thing works better than expected. Not easy to get a good one in that price range so using CC was a no-brainer here. Now, I would not buy a high end item from them. No way! I'd rather pay more in a store NOT going out of business.

No, it doesn't. It says

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Hi!

I just received a mail from CC regarding a warranty extension offer for the HDTV I bought from them last year. What should I do?

Since they are going out of business, should I still buy extended warranty from them?

Advice is really appreciated.

Thank you!

Call the warranty company and ask them what the service procedure will be. They're a separate company that sells warranties through CC.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Best Buy was always better run than Circuit City. CCity would advertise DVDs in their Sunday flier and by Monday they'd be sold out. BBuy at least stocked enough to last the week in most cases. Little like that add up after a while in consumers' minds.

CCity shot itself in the foot when it fired much of it's sales force and replaced them with lower paid employees. They were awful. They practically hid out and talked to each other all day. If you were lucky enough to get their attention you could tell that they were annoyed that you were interrupting their conversation.

It's bad for consumers that BBuy is the only national electronics chain left standing. Here in the NYC/NJ area we have a regional chain called PC Richards that has out-lived all of it's long-gone local competitors like Crazy Eddie, Newmark & Lewis and The Wiz. CCity's collapse could be an opening for some regional chain to expand outside of it's area.
