Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I just started seeing Myer Emco advertisements on TV saying that you can get HDTVs at the prices in Circuit City's out of business sale, but with customer support.

Crafty.

I was tempted to buy one of the Sony BluRay laptops but the 10% off did not sway me. Good thing too, warranteed copies are available cheaper online tho CCs model numbers don't match easily against those online.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

What are the deals down to now? Last I looked it was still 10% and the tv's 8 out of 10 were higher priced than other stores.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

2 days ago, I was at the CC in National City off the 54 and the one in Pt.Loma. There is still a ton of stuff in the stores. TV's of all sizes are still in abundance. Speakers are mostly the hi-end stuff and cheap-o HTIB's. The middle-ground stuff is all gone. Lots of DVD players. Still looking at 10%-20% off, but the popular stuff an enthusiast would be looking for are either gone or not a bargain.

Tech Trader Daily - Barron’s Online : Circuit City To Close All Stores; More Than 35,000 Jobs Lost

I miss the Circuit City that I discovered when they first opened up in my area in the 1980s. It was pretty much the same enjoyable shopping experience through most of the '90s as well but for some reason they felt the need to start meddling with things a few years ago. All of the stores that opened or had been remodeled over the past few years had a "Best Buy in red" vibe that I really didn't care for. I missed the sound rooms and the higher quality electronics such as higher end Onkyo and Polk products that disappeared from their shelves for some reason.

Now is the time for Fry's to start looking at opening a store out in my neck of the woods (somewhere in the Inland Empire). I'm sure a Fry's would do well near the Victoria Gardens Mall in Rancho Cucamonga or the Ontario Mills Mall. The closest Fry's stores are about 30-40 miles away and they always seem to be packed when I shop there.
I'd like Fry's to open in San Francisco. Since I do not longer drive, I cannot visit Fry's any more.

I'd kill for a Frys anywhere on the Eastern seaboard. I actually look forward to my business trips to Tx and Cali just to go to Frys =p How far is the nearest Frys to you now Orestes?

For the record. I was at the C.C. in Roxbury, NJ and the BD selection was fairly substantial. Some prices seemed to have been lowered as well.

Saw an ad this morning on TV - all CDs & DVDs (including Blu-ray) are 40% off. Thinking about maybe stopping on my way home from work to see what's left.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I went in one yesterday, (Chesapeake VA) and I thought it was a great disappointment. Lots of BD left, but at the MSRP of 39.99 and 30% off was $28.00 hence no sale there. Regular DVDs had some small bargains, but they were DVDs no one really wanted.

Not much left on speakers, sound room was completely torn apart and your choice of TVs all over. What kills me is the fact that someone is thinking they are getting a good deal, like to meet those people. The TV were advertised at 25% off, which meant really nothing based on the MSRP. Probably one of the worst going out of business sales ever. Shucks, if they did this during the early days, they might have stayed afloat.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Yesterday I went by my local CC, and there were no bargains regarding a Harmony One remote and a set of Energy speakers (there were two sets left). I could do better online as I did pick up a Harmony One from 6ave.com. I think CC had better deals during Christmas than now. I only feel sorry for the people that work there, and I hope they can fine a job soon.

Technically it's no longer Circuit City. The company that is handling the liquidation sets the prices and discounts.

Scary to see Washington Mutual on their list of clients as well as Tweeter.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

It struck me that had they instituted a general policy of always 5% off retail and publicized it properly, then they might've survived.

If the BDs are down to 40% off then it might be time to check again.

I wouldn't make a special trip or anything...

In my area I saw BD for 39.99, so that would make them like 24.00. Not bad, but the question is what selections do they have? Any hoot happy hunting.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

In my local store they ranged from $25-$35 sticker price last weekend, so they'd be 40% off that. There might be something there I'd drop $15 on.

The BDs are 40% off, but that's 40% off the original sticker price, which is about $5 below MSRP.

I picked up one BD, THE PRESTIGE, which has a MSRP of $34.99 and was marked $29.99. With the 40% discount it was $17.99 plus tax, which brought it to about $19.50. Not bad, but not great either -- Amazon is selling it for $19.99.

I thought about picking up BURN AFTER READING, but at $21 plus tax I figure I'll be able to do better elsewhere.

Unless they get higher than 40% count me out as well.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

The Mrs. needed a digital audio recorder for school, so I paid CC a visit yesterday -- at 30% off, their prices on those were actually good! I also picked up a few CDs (40% off made for very nice deals on the 30th anniversary 2-disc set of The Stranger and the 50th anniversary 2-disc set of Kind of Blue, among others) and two Blu-Rays: Close Encounters for $21 and that John Mayer Where The Light Is (the concert with an acoustic set, a trio set, and a full-band set) for. . .ONE FLIPPIN' CENT!!! That's gotta be some kind of record.

It was a cutout, so it may be available on the cheap other places as well -- look around if it's on your shopping list. Great show, BTW -- there's none of that hyperactive editing that plagues most concert films.

They still had a whole bunch of Onkyo SR-606 receivers for $350. If the price drops any more on those I'll be sorely tempted. (Repeat: Not In Budget. Not In Budget. Not In Budget. . .)

BTW, I don't think I've ever actually *seen* Close Encounters except in bits and pieces on random TV broadcasts. Which is the go-to version? The most recent Director's Cut?

I broke down & bought a 606 today. I needed a reciever & was going to buy one anyway.

Not much left from what I'm reading. Retailers are going to die, I think other will follow, next in line is probably best buy. Actually all the retailers are not all going to die obviously, I think the strongest ones will survive (newegg)

Actually, I was at my local CC this past Saturday and there was still a pretty decent selection of DVDs and surprisingly a lot of Blu-Rays. Not too bad selection of games either. I was able to pick up Halo 3 deluxe edition, Dead Space, Resistance 2 also got the Batman: The Movie BD for a total of about $135. So by all means check out the one near you. Although, obviously, I wouldn't go expecting to be able to find specific titles you might be looking for, but you may find plently you like.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

My concern about buying electronics from a store that's going out of business is the possibility of it breaking down and you have no place to return it. I know the first year is the manufacturer, but I like the idea of going to the store that bought it, and they fix the problem by sending it back to the mfg at no cost to you, or simply replacing the model.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

At the CC in my area, the picking are nearly non-existent in the DVD section and the Blu-ray pickings are slim but I picked up Close Encounters Of The Third Kind on Blu-ray for $17.50 today.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

The CC sale is a joke. Even with 40% off their prices on Blu Ray are still higher than Amazon. Add the TX 8% sales tax all I could do was laugh.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

The sale is now 50% off of DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs and video games. Not too shabby.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Not too shabby indeed. I went by before work today (honestly, it made me late for work!) and got:

A Scanner Darkly (BluRay) for $12.50 -- and get this, they charged the tax based on the $12.50 rather than basing it on the original price, so even in my high-tax area it was only about $13.30!

Not too many other Blu's I wanted, though I may go back for Lethal Weapon (BluRay) for, again, $12.50. I know it's an older MPG codec but, maybe.

Even overpriced items like the Resident Evil box set originally priced at $80 is reasonable at $40 now -- but I already have the 2 of the 3 films in there that are any good.

Sadly, no Narnias left, no Corpse Brides, no tv series on Blu, pretty much just dregs and the overlooked.

I also got a Moby CD for $6.50. Very picked over selection, but, I saw some titles that I already have that would have been a steal, including Robyn, some P!nk, some Avril, mixed in with the crap. Saw U2's Joshua Tree 2-disc edition for an effective price of $15, but I don't like that album.

Basically, very much worth checking out today (Friday). By late Saturday, there won't be anything. Best to take a lunch break today or it will truly be too late.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I've seen Corpse Bride Blu-rays. Also saw one "Clone Wars," one "Cloverfield" and some of the Saw films.

I got "Across the Universe" for $15, "Superman II: Donner Cut" for $12.50 and South Park season 9 on DVD for $20.

A lot of weird DVD stock in the Circuit City I went to yesterday.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Went back and got Mission Impossible 2. It was labeled as $29.95 but came up as only $24.95, so it was $13 and change. Which is a couple bucks better than the last time it was on sale online (when it went for $15 or $16).

I almost grabbed Blazing Saddles, but, it doesn't really demand high-def. And I decided neither does Lethal Weapon.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

When is their final week? All the Onkyo 606s were now gone. I couldn't find any Blu-rays I want at 50% off but I did get a PC game Left 4 Dead at 50% off. I may head back there today & but a tv stand at 60% off & more PC games.
