Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Matter of fact, I have liked PC Richards more than BBuy. I went on buying an xbox360 with forza during xmas and looked all over. BBuy stores in 20 mile radius had NONE. To my surprise PC Richards had 10 in stock . I guess they need to advertise better

Hmmm, you may want to check the "King Kong" and "Serenity" threads over on the HD Software Forums.

BB shipped maybe 2 pcs each per store of these "advertised" titles.

In those cases, yes. My experience with CC is much like Dan's. If I don't get to CC on Sunday, I wasn't getting the sale items but I can usually find Best Buy's all week.

Verdict on price matching:

It's good for ME. As with 99.999 percent of all Americans, that is what truly matters to me.

Good for stores?

Don't know, don't care. Couldn't care less. In that Star Trek Mirror Universe, my evil twin would be absolutely obsessed with whether price matching is a good policy for retail establishments. It would CONSUME HIS VERY BEING.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

We'll, the CC going out of business really shouldn't surprise anyone. They gave up years ago as far as customer service in my opinion. I truely knew the writing was on the wall when I saw lawn chairs for seating in the home theater room of my local store. That's just piss poor and lame. The lesson to be learned here is, customer service must be a priority or don't expect to be in business long. I whole heartedly believe it comes down to that simple fact.

I really miss the Circuit City I patronized in the 80's and early 90's. I always got truly excellent service, just like in the old tv spots.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

DaveB, thanks for the commercial back in the 90s, I remember when an aunt of my wife bought a new computer in the earliy 90s and the one thing we were concerned about was the store staying opened 5 years later from the date she bought the computer. I got my HK receiver from them and it really is sad that all those people are out of work.

By the by heard on the news today Best Buy is cutting personnel as well.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Part of me is upset about Circuit City closing, as they are the dominant retailer in my area. The closest electronics store to me is a CC.

The other part is quite happy as, their customer service is downright evil.

They have the corporate policy of double teaming customers to bully them into buying extended warranties. A second sales associate always magically appears at checkout to tell the customer how they NEED to get the warranty, and whatever they buy is going to break very easily. Even if the person is clearly not interested, they press, and press, and press, and if they don't take it, are extremely rude.

It happened to me with the last three major items I've bought. One of the things I bought came with a mail in rebate. When I didn't take the warranty, and the sales guy was giving me the rebate information, I heard the other sales guy tell him "Why are you giving him that?" (I now go to Best Buy for major items).

I was just in there looking at DVDs a few weeks ago and saw two sales associates bullying a single older woman into buying it.

A company that cares more about selling warranties ("pure profit" as corporate calls it) rather than selling merchandise deserves to fail.

I'm sorry, but I'm glad some of these sales people are losing their jobs.

I have found quite a few bargains in the past couple of weeks at my local store.

Well, considering how many times you've contradicted yourself (which may explain your apparent inability to answer my simple question about why you think the way you claim to), can you blame me?

Walmart's pricing policy (you know, the one that includes price-matching) -- GOOD for business, or BAD for business? And WHY?

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

The Faster Forward Friday post Friday Follow-Ups: iTunes Plus Upgrades, Circuit City Sales - Faster Forward discusses this situation. Some nice quotes:
Quote:
a visit to its Baileys Crossroads location last week revealed no bargains and many overpriced items. ....
On Wednesday, however, the firm overseeing Circuit City's liquidation sale announced that it would take a further whack at pricing, taking 25 percent off plasma TVs, 20 percent off LCD TVs and 40 percent off car stereo systems, among other discounts ... A stop at the same Baileys Crossroads store yesterday evening revealed more empty shelves but also a better range of offers among the remaining hardware. Some items -- for instance, a Canon camera "discounted" for more than it sells for on Amazon -- were as unattractively priced as ever. But others either cost no more than at the benchmark Web retailer or, in a few cases, were selling for less.

I've had problems finding sale items in Best Buy on many occasions. Since getting my first Blu-ray player a few weeks ago I have gone into Best Buy Buy near work to pick up a few of the catalog BD titles that are on sale only to find the ones I want are gone by Tuesday. I have encountered out of stock sale items time and time again over the years but that's just a recent example. It's really frustrating when something I want goes on sale and it's gone by the time I get there on Sunday. Of course Circuit City is guilty of the same thing as well.

I never had experiences that were too horrible in any of the Circuit City stores that I have shopped at. My biggest complaint is that they tried too hard to mimic Best Buy the past few years. All of the stores in my area were either remodeled to look more like Best Buy (in red) or were new stores that had that look from the get go. I still miss the Circuit City that had employees that knew what they were talking about and had the sound rooms to play with equipment before I plunked down my hard earned money. When Best Buy first came to my area (around 1996 I think), the employees never really knew much about what they were selling so I never expected the same level of service that I used to get at Circuit City. It's a shame they felt the need to fire all of their higher paid employees a couple of years ago. I think that's another thing that killed them.

I don't answer questions crafted to pre-suppose the answer you want to receive. That would be idiocy. I don't agree with you, so why would I allow you to impose your assumptions on the context of the answers I give?

Let's see. . .I present facts and ask you why you think they're bad for business, and instead of answering, you complain that the question is crafted to "pre-suppose" an answer you don't agree with.

I definitely agree that in this case, the facts "pre-suppose" an answer other than the one you want to give. Sorry about that.

All you wrote was something about a business crafting its own policy instead of having it dictated by competitors. That read to me like you considered it to be a good thing. Until I pointed out that it included price matching. So did I misunderstand that comment? You were saying that it was a bad policy that Walmart was crafting for itself?

Or is your perspective that price-matching is bad for business except when Walmart does it?

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

So if i am right, no bargins must be had, cause no one is talking about them. I drove by CC yesterday, saw signs for 30% off. Thats not enough to even get me in the door. Yawn!
Let me know if i ever need to walk in the store again.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

Well, at 20% off the Nikon D90 kit is $1039 which is a good deal. At 30% off Its a great deal and I would buy one to back up my D300.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

The other entry level dslr that people like, the Canon Rebel XSi, is under $650 at CC now -- the same price as currently on Amazon and JR.com. I believe CC only carried the black model though, there were no silvers on display or underneath. Tax will make it more expensive than Amazon.

Movies and CDs are now 25% off. That brings their overpriced $25 BluRays closer to a reasonable price, but not a sale price.

PS3 games 20% off -- and way overpriced (get Bioshock for $30 at Best Buy this week versus $60 - 20% off at CC).

Hard drives - gone. Most computers - gone. Thumb drives - good ones gone. Computer speakers - gone, having never been on sale for anywhere near a good price (well, there were a few Creative Labs Gigaworks ones left, but they were still overpriced.

Ink - 20% off, worth getting if you need ink.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

The CC by me had a few of the official rechargeable battery packs for Guitar Hero guitars as of my last visit. I may check again to see if any are left at a better discount.

We were in Ross today and my wife saw some Linens & Things stuff on the shelves. I wonder if we'll see any leftovers from CC show up at other discounters once they close up shop.

All the blu-rays I've seen there are in the $25-$34 level at 25% not a deal at all.

No surprise there, I haven't been in the store yet simply because I know I wouldn't see any real deals.

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I finally stopped in to the Circuit City nearest me, which is up to 30% off CDs and DVDs. The music and movies were obviously picked over, but there was a good amount of stuff left. Most of the newer releases were tagged around retail, but it looks like stock that had been around was not at MSRP.

I saw SNL Season three in the limited edition box at $49.99 and 30 Rock season two at $29.99. 30% off got me better than the current Amazon prices on those. The SNL is currently over $50 on Amazon as it is!

Re: Circuit City closing all stores -- watch for bargains coming soon

I picked up Lego Batman for xbox 360 today for $30 and I got a stand my wife and I had been looking at for a couple of months. Prior to the going out of business anouncment it was 320 or so, we got it for 135 out the door. Other than that it was very picked over and not very good deals on electronics.
