LucasFilm today revealed plans to release the first four episodes of Star Wars The Clone Wars: Season One exclusively on DVD in late March.

In the same announcement, LucasFilm confirmed a multi-disc box set is in the works for the complete first season of the series that will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. That set is expected to arrive later this year, most likely timed to coincide with the debut of season two on The Cartoon Network.

For the season one DVD and Blu-ray Disc set, LucasFilm is currently producing a number of bonus features that include "explorations of the behind-the-scenes creation of the hit series."

I'd say now nobody can complain since they say that a Blu-ray is coming but since it's Star Wars, I'm sure there will be lots of "I hate you Luca$!!!!!!".

I'll wait for the Complete Season box set rather than vol 1

Perhaps you should re-read the original post.

I think what he's referring to is that SW :TCW vol.1 is only being released on DVD only in march. We won't see vol.1 on BD until the entire set of season one is released later this year. So if you're wanting this on blu, you have to wait until fall anyway.

Hmmm...I thought the link made it perfectly clear, but this is what I'm talking about:

I've bolded it in the 1st post to head off confusion.

Yes I am buying the full season set at the end of the year.

I am just wondering why LFL are releasing only 4 episodes this time and not more ?

Any ideas ?

Just to be clear, they're not releasing 4 eps on Blu-ray, but instead waiting to release the full season. The DVD is 4 eps because that's a feature-length disc. IIRC, the earlier (hand-drawn) "Clone Wars" series did the same thing.

Re: "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" Season 1 coming to Blu-ray in 2009

The hand-drawn series was released in two collections, each collecting a season. I was hoping this release would speed the Tartokovsky animated series BD release, because I am interested in purchasing that. I'll assume no news on that is bad news.

That news would come from Fox, anyhoo, unless the rights to the series, having originally been produced for Cartoon Network, would in some way revert to WB after a certain period of time.

Glad to see the announcement that the season set is coming. Just like with Peter Jackson's extended LOTR editions, fans can buy now or wait for the larger set. Nice to be kept officially informed of what's coming.

Additionally, a 4 episode SD DVD hits a nice price-point for parents looking to pick their child up a gift. The time frame for this 4 episode disc looks to be positioned to take advantage of Easter gift giving.

Definetly a purchase for me. Should be interesting to see in HD.

Sansweet next moved the subject to Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The smash hit series is now running in 166 countries, and translated into nearly 30 different languages.

Sansweet reminded the audience that, in addition to a compilation of four episodes being released on DVD in March, this year will bring the entire season in a deluxe boxed set complete with value-added bonus material (and a Blu-Ray release!).

Sansweet explained that the audience at New York Comic-Con selected, via their applause, some of the bonus material that ended up on the DVD, and screened the winning piece — a “Show Reel” made very early from rough concept art and paintings that helped explain what The Clone Wars could be.

What's really interesting about an upcoming episode is that Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Aurra Sing
will be back

Knowing WB's history of only Dolby Digital audio tracks on their Blu-rays, it is safe to assume that the set will be in Dolby Digital 5.1.  I would like to be nicely surprised with Dolby TrueHD audio, however.

Is there any confirmation on the Blu-ray audio?

That's good, now let's hope the AR is correct. I suspect we'll get the 1.78, instead of the correct 2.35. If so I won't be picking it up.

Unless I'm missing something, I can't recall any time Warner has given any reason whatsoever to "suspect" MAR for this or any other series on Blu-ray.  The OAR is present in the theatrical/"pilot" release for the series, not to mention for all widescreen releases of the live-action films.

I'm pretty sure that LFL is calling the shots on this release but there's there's still absolutely no reason to think that it won't be 2.35:1.

OK, but it always pays to wait. The fact that it ran 1.78 over here in the US, and 2.35 overseas in HD was a bit confusing and concerning.
It would be so rude of WB to tease us with a 2.35:1 trailer and then release it 1.78:1 (or 1.85:1).

So DTS 5.1 instead of Dolby Digital 5.1?  Okay.

Yes, we need a confirmation on the aspect ratio.

Looking forward to this. I only get CN in standard def (or "fake HD," not 1080) so the discs will be the first chance to see the episodes in HD.

BTW, Sansweet suggests that the BDs of the 6 films could be tied to the premiere of the live action show, in a "definitive" box. See it here:

I think that shows that Cartoon Network underestimates their audience.
