Just a reminder that season 2 of Damages starts tonight on F/X at 10 p.m. EST.

re: Damages season 2

Pretty good set up episode, but not quite as good as the way season one started.

I hope they're going somewhere with Frobisher. Almost seemed like they were just trying to find a way to give Ted Danson more screen time.

I was caught off guard by the ending.

re: Damages season 2

I liked the ending, but as I thought about it afterwards, I realized it could mean almost anything.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Maybe the gun was loaded with blanks, or she intentionally missed. Whoever it is, she's obviously messing with them; a phony execution would fit right in. In this show, "I lied too" could refer to anything.

re: Damages season 2

The change in cinematography between last season and this season opener was jarring due to all the flashbacks, but the 6 month later footage looks like a return to season 1 footage. Glenn Close had some work done to rejuvenate her face for this season as well.

Was there really a big difference? I'll take your word for it, because my FX reception is so poor that it all looks like it was photographed through the same dirty lens. If I thought I could avoid spoilers, I'd wait for a DVD or BD release.

re: Damages season 2

I thought the second season got off to a great start. Lots of balls in the air already. It will be interesting to see how they juggle them all (and the two timelines - not to mention the left-over plot threads from last year) over the - 13? - episodes. William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden are great additions to the cast. The short-form basic cable originals are attracting some major talent (see also The Closer, Saving Grace, Rescue Me and the late, lamented, The Sheild.)

I'm sure they are. He's still in the opening credits as a regular. I think they just needed to a) establish that he wasn't killed, b) that he's still part of the story if only because Ellen wants him dead, and c) where he is starting from this season.

So - does anybody not think that Patty set-up Arsinoe's daughter for that drug bust (and then didn't even bother to call the D.A.) in order to derail his political race and get him (and his money) for her foundation? That was vintage Patty Hewes. (Especially since she obviously lied to Regis about using her cut of the Frobisher settlement to provide most of the funding.)

Joe

Absolutely. Not only that, but is there any chance the Timothy Olyphant character isn't a Patty Hewes plant?

Tell me about it. Why do I have FXHD if none of their original programming is in HD?

Thanks. You just made me feel a whole lot better about not having FX-HD available on my cable system. It is bad enough seeing (rarely "watching) the stretch and/or crop nonsense that airs on channels like TBS-HD, Sci-Fi "HD" and others.

Joe

re: Damages season 2

I finally got to watching the premiere, and hopefully I'll get around to watching "Burn It, Shred It, I Don't Care" this weekend, which I recorded. Looks like another fun ride this season.

Sometimes, I feel the same way with the Tom character.

Re: Damages season 2

Okay...I'll admit I didn't see that ending coming. Wow. I totally suspected there was something going on with the William Hurt character...but not quite that. And I didn't expect the reveal to happen that quickly. While this show sometimes does seem to try a little too hard to "shock", more often than not it succeeds.

Re: Damages season 2

At first I thought the old guy acted alone in trying to have Ellen killed, but then I figured I was likely misreading the scene and he was just warning the guy with "She can never know!" because of how Patty isn't one for loose ends that can come back and bite her. I do wonder why he'd care so much about the would-be killer though.

Interesting to see Wes meeting with the guy who killed Ellen's fiance.

Re: Damages season 2

Darrell Hammond has really taken on a dark role. Threw me at first, similar to viewing Wilford Brimley play a hitter in The Firm.

Re: Damages season 2

I've been wondering how they were going to tie Frobisher into the present storyline, and now we know. Verrrrry interesting.

So, am I the only one who is really likes seeing Marcia Gay Harden slut it up?

Joe

You know, I had no idea that was him until I read your post, but now I know exactly who you're talking about. What's funny is I kept thinking he looked like a disturbing, fatter Al Gore. Didn't Hammond used to play Gore in SNL?

Re: Damages season 2

Gore, right. In that vein, Hammond's character is somewhat following ecological imperatives: limit population growth.

Re: Damages season 2

Glad I found this series. But am only just catching it halfway into the second season.

Any idea whether it is going to have an ending this year, or will it go on and on like Sopranos?

(I'm debating whether to buy a DVD of Season 1)

If I were you, I would stop watching immediately before doing any further damage and just start watching from season one. While season two technically started a new case, there are tons of references and story arcs still going on that tie to the first season. Plus, I think the first season was better.

Re: Damages season 2

I think this show holds the record for the number of "And" credits with 4 of them in the opening credit sequence.

Re: Damages season 2

i've only watched the first few eps. want to keep the surprises coming, so i'll catchup on the rest of the thread when i have gone through it all, but the dude from deadwood is psychotic with all the guns in the cabinet! =P

Re: Damages season 2

just caught to even the most recent ep. it's got potential to be the best season =D. the fact that we immoral people EVERYWHERE and .gov is incredibly corrupt. is there ONE DECENT person here lol. it's great stuff.

i KNEW the wife-bit from the FBI guy was gonna be somn. it can't just be a throwaway line.

Re: Damages season 2

So I was wondering something. We now know that Pete was actually the one responsible for trying to have Ellen killed, right? And Patty had no knowledge of it? So with that said, do we even know for sure if Patty has done anything illegal? I know that may be a stupid question but I have a hard enough time remembering last week's episode let alone last season.

Re: Damages season 2

Another thing on this show...has there ever been a bigger diversity between two characters played by the same actor on two shows running at the same time than David Costabile, who plays the psycho detective Nick on 'Damages' and Mel's husband in 'Flight of the Conchords'?

Re: Damages season 2

I don't know, but I've always said one of the reasons I consider Joe Pesci underrated is that he can do movies like Superintendant, Home Alone, and My Counsin Vinny, then turn around and do Godfellas -- and you believe him in both. I like seeing things like that because it moves things from just watching someone who naturally fits an aesthetic and mannerism to someone who consciously adjusts his nature to fit what a role requires. The end product can be just as enjoyable either way, but I do have an appreciation for those who work the craft.

Re: Damages season 2

how many eps for this season? i think we're on #8, or 9 right?

Re: Damages season 2

Pretty interesting season finale. This makes 2 seasons in a row now where with about 20 minutes left in the final episode I was thinking how could Patty and Ellen possibly work together again, and yet they somehow rectify it enough to make it plausible again. Great job by Glenn Close in that scene with Ellen where she was bleeding from multiple stab wounds (unbeknownst to Ellen or the viewers).

Kind of funny seeing David Costabile (Detective Messer) get his head blown off, and then in the following commercial break see him in that T-Mobile commercial.

Pretty sad how this show, possibly the best show running on TV right now (along with 'Breaking Bad'), hasn't even made it to a second page of posts.

I think a lot of people wait to watch it on DVD. I hate taking any chances, because the show's "puzzle" construction is a big part of the fun of watching it. Even the least little spoiler diminishes the enjoyment Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
(e.g., Messer, who turns out to be largely a side plot, but you can't be sure of that until this very last episode).

What I especially admire is how, despite so much tied up, the writers have left themselves so many openings for a third season that could include a lot of characters we already know.

Re: Damages season 2

I hadn't gleaned that it was a season finale I was watching? The one wwhere Patty and Ellen are both seen as 'vindictive'?

Anyway, it's a great program, and I'm glad to have stumbled on it.

Re: Damages season 2

Good wrap up, I guess.

My favorite part of this season, BY FAR, was Bill Hurt. Such a great, great actor. Man, his character really lost it there. It was sad and scary to watch.

Ted Danson got dropped like a rock, but I was glad to see a little cameo which means he could be back next season.

I did kind of like the 'understanding' Ellen and Patty came to. Obviously, she WILL be back...

Re: Damages season 2

Yes, I'm sure Ellen will be back, but I have to admit, she is easily my least favorite character on the show, and I would have no problem if we never saw her again.

Re: Damages season 2

she's the main character!

aaanyways. it was pretty awesome to have that dead lawyer come back for special appearance as her CONSCIENCE! good God Patty has one?

this year continues the great performances of last year! it was very awesome! but having Tom's sister is kind of deus ex machina and sketchy.

i didn't feel this season was better than last, but feel like it's a continuation from the 1st to wrap things up. i wonder if tim olyphant is signed up to come back. i really want his character to tell her that he killed her fiance's killer! that would freaking rock! loose threads >P.

i wonder what they'll come up with next?
