Culver City, CA (January 5, 2009) – The winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival; Frozen River will be released on Blu-ray™ High-Def and DVD on February 10, 2009, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Written and directed by Courtney Hunt and starring Melissa Leo (TV’s Homicide: Life on the Streets, 21 Grams), this Sony Pictures Classics film will be available for an SLP of $39.95 for Blu-ray and $28.96 for DVD. Special features on both versions will include a commentary with Writer and Director Courtney Hunt and Producer Heather Rae.
Frozen River, which features “a superb performance by Melissa Leo” (David Ansen, Newsweek), has been nominated for seven Independent Spirit Awards including Best Feature, Best Director and Best First Screenplay (Courtney Hunt), Best Female Lead (Melissa Leo), Best Supporting Female (Misty Upham), Best Supporting Male (Charlie McDermott) and the Piaget Producers Award (Heather Rae). Frozen River has already won numerous awards including the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best First Film (Courtney Hunt), the Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Feature and Best Breakthrough Actor (Melissa Leo), the National Board of Review Award for Best Directorial Debut (Courtney Hunt) and Spotlight Award (Melissa Leo) and the Lena Sharpe Audience Award for Best Female Director at the Seattle Film Festival. The film was also named as one of the American Film Institute’s Ten Best Films of 2008 and was chosen as the Opening Night Selection at MOMA’s 2008 New Directors/New Films series.
Synopsis
Life in Massena is as harsh and barren as the frigid landscape. In this bleak terrain, two hardened single mothers are trying to make a life for their children. Lila is a widowed Mohawk whose mother-in-law “stole” her newborn son a year ago. Ray is a mother of two whose gambling-addicted husband just left town with the down payment for their new trailer home. Faced with little opportunity to make ends meet, Ray and Lila embark on an illegal venture transporting immigrants into the U.S. across Mohawk territory. With the money for the down payment within Ray’s grasp, the women are determined to make one last run. When circumstances spiral out of control, the two women must make life or death decisions based on their friendship and love for their children.
