Director Saul Dibb's The Duchess is the life story Georgiana Spencer, the Duchess of Devonshire (1757 - 1806). Set in England is the late 1770s and 1780s, Duchess is one of those magnificent costume dramas that can either be interminably boring or tell a fascinating tale. Fortunately, The Duchess falls into the latter category.
Spencer seems to be have been well ahead of her time. In an era when women were more objects for fashion and breeding, we find a woman who has an understanding of "celebrity" and how it can be used for political causes.
My one problem with the film is that over a certain number of years, the children in the film do not seem to age at all. Possibly a case of Barrie syndrome.
Paramount / Vantage has brought the film to Blu-ray with all of its color and detail intact. Blacks are withheld in some cases, which seems purposeful. If one has an interest in history is more specifically is an Anglophile, this film is for them.
