Debut on Blu-ray™ Hi-Def March 31
Warner Home Video Toasts Extensively Restored and Remastered Classics with Sparkling New Versions

Burbank, Calif., January 5, 2009 -- “Thank heaven” …. and Warner Home Video!

The Two-Disc Special Editions of two glorious Best Picture Oscar®-winning 1950s classics from the crown jewel collection of M-G-M’s Golden Age of Musicals, will make their Blu-ray Hi-Def debut on March 31. An American in Paris Blu-ray Hi-Def and Gigi Blu-ray Hi-Def will each sell for $28.99 SRP.

An American in Paris and Gigi were meticulously remastered and released on standard DVD by Warner Home Video last September and were an instant success. George Feltenstein, WHV’s Senior Vice President, Theatrical Catalog Marketing said, “Warner Home Video is truly proud to be able to release these two magnificent films as special editions on Blu Ray disc. Our talented colleagues at Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging put a great deal of effort into creating the newly restored masters of both films, and the amazing technical capabilities offered by Blu Ray technology truly transforms the viewing experience to a whole new level of entertainment.”

The films won a total of 15 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best director, were produced by Arthur Freed and helmed by Vincente Minnelli. Alan Jay Lerner was the screenwriter on both.

An American in Paris, originally photographed in Technicolor, is the latest recipient of Warner Bros.’ proprietary Ultra-Resolution process, which takes the original Technicolor negatives and carefully combines them to yield a stunning picture with sharpness and depth of field never seen before.

I'm very eager to have these despite the fact that neither is my favorite MGM musical. I hope this will be the first in a succession of MGM classics brought to Blu-ray.

We shall see what we shall see.

These are already out elsewhere, here's DVDBeaver's reviews of Gigi and An American in Paris. Most shots from the latter look absolutely stunning!

Can't find Gigi anywhere! Did BeastBuy simply not order very many copies? Actually I couldn't find it, South Pacific or American in Paris! So--musicals are finally arriving on BR and I can't buy any...

I know what you mean some titles are hard to find anywhere.

I have no idea what is going on at Best Buy that they can't have their sales people order all new Blu Ray releases/ Esp from the Warner Catalog. No stores in the MN area have them for stock and Best BUy is based in MN.

I bought mine at Barnes and Noble at not great prices... I know here comes the posts Order online! - Sorry I Do Not like ordering new releases online because I never get them on the release date.

Best Buy wasn't stocking South Pacific either.

So either Warner Bros isn't pushing Best Buy and I know it works both ways but they need to stock these titles. I walked into Best Buy with my Blu rays buys from Barnes and Noble at the Mall Of America in Bloomington today and a salesperson thought I could have gotten them cheaper there! I said well you guys didn't get them in one area store!

Needless to say everyone was stocking the Matrix release from today from WB. Although Best Buys were bashed up I stopped at Target to get a mint condition copy.

With so many retailers like Circuit City gone and what I hear is about 95% plus Borders stores no longer carrying DVDs or BDS except for top new releases Best Buy could have the market cornered as LONG AS THEY ORDER AND STOCK THE TITLES. They are a bit clueless on this as much as you would explain it to a store manager because it is a corporate thing.

The review copies of AN AMERICAN IN PARIS and GIGI were very late arriving. GIGI hasn't gotten to me yet, but it was put in the mail today.

Thanks for sharing your observations. I too have the exact same complaints about life here in Minnesota. These recent classic titles on BD are being completely ignored by Best Buy in the Twin Cities and beyond. Just as you pointed out, I wanted these releases on the actual release date so did not order online. There are five classic titles from the past two weeks (3 WB, 2 Fox) that I haven't spent my money on because they are not available locally.

Re: WHV Press Release: An American In Paris & Gigi (Blu-ray)

I was just looking at DVD Beaver's review of the AAiP BD. Does anyone know if the Anatomy of a Dancer bonus feature is in HD?

Just curious. I've never seen it but it sounds like a terrific add-on.

I have that information in my review of the title on this site, but to save you some time, it isn't in HD.

Well I agree. BB didn't have any of the three musicals that came out yesterday (unless they sold out what few copies they had, earlier in the day). I finally found them at 7:30pm at a place called Fry's (I think it's only here on the West Coast). Gigi was only $22.99. But...I mean, I'd have preferred to go to Best Buy, but oh well-they lost a lot of income because they were too busy stocking more copies of Twilight and didn't have time to bother with Academy Award-winning crap like Gigi I guess...
