Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

Hey there. This is Ockeghem's son. Ockeghem gave me permission to use his profile to ask a question.

I'm having trouble getting photos onto my ps3 using a flash drive. I place them (the pics) under a PHOTO folder within a PS3 folder on the flash drive, yet when I plug the drive into the ps3, it comes up saying that there are no photos. I have also clicked "Display All", yet that had no effect (it said there are no photos to display).

The drive I'm using is a generic Staples brand 512MB. Could it be that the drive just doesn't mesh well with the ps3 (I even formated it to FAT32 and gave that a try, but that didn't work any differently than FAT)?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

Try plugging the drive into the PS3 and then formatting it through the PS3 system. Under the settings option on the XMB there is an option to do it. After that, just load the photos on there without any specific folder structure. Go to images on the XMB, highlight the flash drive, press triangle, and select display all. It should show you any files that the PS3 can see. If they're not there, then you need to double check the format of the files you're putting on there. Are they JPEGs, BMPs, etc. and does the PS3 support those files?

Ok, thank you for the advice.

I ended up trying a different drive which, oddly, worked perfectly (also, I had the photos in JPEG format on both drives, which the PS3 does support).

I'm still going to try formatting the 512 MB drive, though. I would rather have two working drives for the PS3 than one.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

That drive might not be compatible with the PS3 for some reason. See if there's a resource online where you can check this. Good to know the other one worked.

Morgan,

Thanks again for the help. The drive is a generic "Staples" brand, and it's not compatible with the PS3. I checked, and it turns out some drives just don't work as well as others, and aren't recognized as well.

Anyway, using the other drive, an Attache, it worked perfectly.

Thank you again for the help.

Re: Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

I've had this same problem. In fact, I've never been able to get the PS3 to recognize anything on any flash drive, and I've tried multiple ones.'

Re: Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

Did you do the press triangle trick? If the console can see the drive, highlight it (if you have pics select it under photos, videos then select under videos), and press triangle to select "see all contents" or whatever it says. Also, if that doesn't work, format the drive using the PS3 and it should work. That, or the drives aren't compatible with the PS3.

Ah, I hadn't tried that. I'll check it out tonight. Thanks.

Triangle trick worked, thanks.

You'd think they'd have fixed this with one of their many system updates by now.

Re: Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

I think you need to put the file structure on the flash drive in a specific format in order for video/photos/music to be recognized instantly. Either way, the triangle trick works.

Re: Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

How about with USB hard drives? I've been trying to get it to recognize media on a Western Digital Passport portable drive. It actually sees the drive, but says nothing is on the drive. I know there are videos on the drive, and my XBOX 360 has no problems reading the files. I know the PS3 can play the files because I tried playing them straight off the dvd-r they were on (they are .avi files). But when I copy them onto the hard drive, it says "no playable titles" or something like that... Any suggestions? If I reformat the drive with the PS3 will the XBOX360 still be able to access the files?

Did you try the triangle button trick? See above. Also, is the USB hard drive in the proper file format?

Re: Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

I haven't tried the triangle option, but will try it tonight. As for the formatting, it is the fat32 format that the drive came set up as. As I mentioned, it works fine with the xbox360, so I kind of assumed that since both systems are PC based, that it should work too...

Re: Question about the PS3 concerning a flash drive.

Microsoft owns the NTSF formatting method, but FAT or FAT32 is a generic open one. The PS3 will work with the FAT/FAT32 formatting.

In order for videos to appear on their own, the drive has to have the data stored in a specific way, like in a folder labeled C:\PlayStation3\Videos\ or something like that. I'm not really sure, but I also don't care enough to find out if I don't need to. Check the book that came with your PS3. Pressing triangle and selecting the "show all" option works, too.
