The Official 2009 HTF watch your Blu-ray collection challenge

Thread Starter
There has been an ongoing sd dvd challenge
for years now, so how about a blu-ray challenge
since i'm sure many people here watch mostly blu-ray now.

If the administration thinks this is redundant i understand.
Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Borrowed from the previous challenges...

1. The goal of the challenge is to watch EVERY SINGLE TITLE in your collection (Extras are optional, but, like commentaries, are encouraged).
2. Commentaries are optional (but encouraged).

3. The CHALLENGE shall begin at 12:01am on January the 1st, 2008 and end at 11:59 on December the 31st, 2009.

4. Make up your own rules if you like.

Those are the only guidelines. Use this thread to keep track of the titles you watch. Reserve your place in the thread and then just update that post with each film. Some have much larger collections and can't get through it, so they my decide to skip the extras and just do the films. That's entirely up to you. This is just for fun. No prizes involved if you finish. Just the satisfaction of knowing you watched 'em all. Enjoy.

Link to this thread in your signatures if you would like.

Re: The Official 2009 HTF watch your Blu-ray collection challenge

I tried to do the SD oen a number of years ago, but my collection is about 2000 titles now and it quicly became impossible. I'm still at 110 for Blu and may be able to pull it off. We shall see.

* 20090103: Live Free or Die Hard. I love this series, but without cussing, it not really the same, even with all the shout-outs to previous films. Stupid Fox doesn't want us to have a high-def unrated cut.

I think I can pull this off, since I just bought the player and I only own 9 Blu-rays!

Re: The Official 2009 HTF watch your Blu-ray collection challenge

I will definitely attempt this, and this will, naturally, include rewatching all the blu-rays I have now as well as the 40 or so I have waiting in the wings.

This will at least, I hope, push me a little more to watch all that I buy. I think I will go through the films first and then, if I have any days left, go back and watch the extras.

This sounds like a fun challenge. Unfortunately, I have suspended all Blu-ray watching for the next couple of weeks as I'm currently waiting for my new 52" Bravia W to make it's way home. Once it's setup, I'm in.....think I'll start with Batman Begins & The Dark Knight.

Re: The Official 2009 HTF watch your Blu-ray collection challenge

So far in 2009, I've watched one of my 20 or so BDs (haven't bothered to count them exactly). I watched a few of them in 2008 (titles I'll likely revisit in 09 so I'll rate them then).

Wall*E **** 1/2 (ratings listed below as borrowed from the OP)
The Golden Compass *** 1/2 (probably helps to have read the books--I find Roger Eberts' review of this sums it up best)
Shoot 'Em Up **** (with the caveat that it is NOT for all tastes)

what the stars mean.
5 stars classic, all timer.
4 stars must see highly recommended
3 stars above average, well worth a look
2 stars a disappointment, a better movie was expected
1 star watch only if nothing else is on
0 stars useless complete waste of film

PS--does "rule # 4" allow for HD DVDs of titles also on BD--I don't plan to replace them with BD but each format is HDM. It's fine either way (easier for me to finish them this year if it's BD only as I have 120 HD DVDs with about 100 of them unwatched) Just curious and I'm not a "format fanboy" so either way is fine with me.

Re: The Official 2009 HTF watch your Blu-ray collection challenge

I only have about 25 BRs right now, so it's doable. This thread does prompt me to wonder, though: If someone has thousands of movies, how does he have time to watch all of them, let alone more than once? And if you only watch it once, why collect it?

Re: The Official 2009 HTF watch your Blu-ray collection challenge

Depends on how many thousands--but the same can be said of CDs/albums etc.

I have, roughly, three types of films in my collection (all formats combined, about 600 titles). Work-related. I use full or excerpt screenings in my classes. Heavy rotation (more than twice a year minimum, usually 4 or more: sub section, kid movies). Pretty self explanatory. Covers wide variety of genres. Light rotation/bargains. Films I think others will enjoy and keep on hand to either loan or screen when guests are here (like my dad--we usually have "movie night" when he visits--happens 4-6 times a year)/films that are cheaper than rentals that will get at least two screenings.

With that rough categorization, I could go to 1500-2000 films and still get around to all of them within 5 years. Moreover, when "TV season" is "down" (during re-runs), my movie watching goes way up.

Of course, there is also the collection aspect itself, but that is best left for another thread (as it extends to far more than one type of collection--I have over 5000 books on my shelves and I keep buying new ones--work related, in many cases, but still).

You bring to light the darker aspects. It is an illness, but hundreds of dedicated health professionals are racing to find a cure.

For some of us, there is no sunlight, only the light that shines meagerly from an open refrigerator door.

Be wise. Be strong. Early detection and treatment is your best defense.

It's an excellent question, and one I struggle with constantly. One of my New Year's resolutions is to cut back on impulse buys and to stop pre-ordering and wait for sales. I went a bit overboard with Blu-ray Disc purchases last year, especially during Amazon's Black Friday sale. So the first order of business this year has been watch those impulse purchases, hence the 'dreck' in my list thus far , and purge them from my collection.

Re: The Official 2009 HTF watch your Blu-ray collection challenge

What the heck. . .I'll jump in.

I was in the middle of watching Ratatouille when the challenge began, so it counts.

January:
  • Ratatouille - (I can't decide whether I've been generous because it's Pixar or whether I've been too hard on it because I expect better from Pixar. . .)
  • Wall-E -
  • SuperBad -
February:
  • Cars (partial; the first of dozens I'm sure!) -
  • Tropic Thunder - (this seems to be the blind buy du jour -- for me it worked out pretty well)
  • John Mayer: Where The Light Is Live In LA - (Got it at a closing Circuit City for a penny!)
  • Madagascar: Back 2 Africa -
March:
  • Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid -
  • Within Temptation: Black Symphony - (Would have easily earned 5 stars if not for the ludicrously hyperactive editing )
April:
  • Rush: Snakes & Arrows Live -
  • Hot Fuzz (HD-DVD) -
May:
  • Wall-E again
  • Jeff Beck Performing This Week Live At Ronnie Scott's -
  • The Matador (HD-DVD) -
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey - (My son's first viewing!)
  • The Dark Knight - (Another blind buy that really lived up to the hype.)
  • Speed Racer -
June:
  • Within Temptation: Black Symphony again
  • Transformers (HD-DVD) - (I let my son watch a little bit of this.)
  • The Who At Kilburn 1977 - (A/V is not the greatest but as a historical document this is spectacular)
July:
  • Dan In Real Life -
  • Transformers (HD-DVD) - (I let my son watch the rest of this -- in small chunks. )
  • Iron Maiden: Flight 666 - (Movie only; haven't watched the standalone concert footage yet)

I watched Iron Man () and How The West Was Won () in the last couple of days of '08, so I may grandfather 'em in if I don't get to 'em again. (But I might re-watch Iron Man just to record how much time was spent on scenes of Robert Downey fiddling with tools.)

Anything I don't get to will be made up for by the 100+ times I'm bound to watch Cars (guest review by my son: googolplex stars) this year.
