CALLING ALL PROJECTOR GURUS

I have done quite a bit of research but I'm sure there is something I've missed. Attached are photos of the room and a layout and dimensions of the area.

I'm looking at an Epson 1080 UB or a 6500 UB. I will go with the 1080 UB if the prices drop a bunch because of the release of the 6500.

I used Projector central to obtain some basic information.
I wanted to achieve a 119" diagonal screen with good image. Here are the numbers Projector Central's calculator came up with.

Throw length 15-11'
Max Light 5 %(2fc)
Image Brightness 15 fl
Zoom at 1.55 (middle of zoom extents)
Best seating distance 15' to 11'
Screen gain needed 1.1

Questions
Does the image need to brighter? Is 15 fl sufficient? The room it's self will have the lights off and the pool room behind the theater has a dimmer switch.

I could move the projector closer and reduce the zoom to get a brighter image, but what are the draw backs? I understand putting the projector too far back will diminish the brightness but what about too close?
Are there any foreseeable problems with the projector being located over the couch? Noise/light?

What do you think and what would you change?
Am I overlooking anything?

moving the PJ closer will not increase the light out put.

14 FL is lots for a FP application in a dark (black room)...actually it is lot.

119 is a very large screen. I do not think you will get 14 fL at this size. However you are making the correct choice with the 1080 UB as it is a very bright little unit.

Thanks Greg, Do you ever come to the Atlanta Area and what would it cost to calibrate one of these units for me?

I do not service atlanta personally (though I will be there in September and could do it then). One of my partners does service Atlanta. His name is Doug Weil and you can contact him off of the lionav site if the September timing does not work.

forgot to answer...

$50 travel and $400 for the calibration. This would include upto 4 sources and full adjustment of the CMS controls of the display. This would be a THX Certified Calibration.

If you don't mind what screen would you recommend. I was looking to spend less than $700.

Also, do you think I should shrink the size of the screen? You stated it was large. I know it’s larger than it should be for an ideal image for these projector units but I would like to keep the Wow factor (big screen). I guess I need to know if the image will diminish in an exponential or linear fashion the larger you make it above recommended size.

The couch seating is 17-10' away from the screen and the bar seats are even farther so I should not be an issue with seating distance.

Any suggestions on the screen? I will want to spend less than $700. There are so many options for screens and they all think they are the best.

The seating distance calculator is stating I need a 120" screen based on the location of my seats. Gregg Lowewn, who know his stuff, says 120" is to large. What would you guys do? If the screen is 100" I will lose the immersion affect according to THX standards. If The screen is 120" I will lose the resolution and brightness. Any ides?

I'm confused as to what your seating distance will be from screen. You said 11-15' and you also said 17-10'. Does that PJ even have enough lumens for a 120" screen?

Sorry, for the confusion. I see where it’s coming from. I’m kind of babbling because I don’t know what I’m talking about.

The numbers from Projector Central's Calculator states the best seating distance are 15' to 11' base on a diagonal screen size of 120".

The screen calculator at this site
Viewing Distance Calculator states a screen size of 120” should have a maximum seating distance of 16.3’. This is close to where I will be seated (17’10”). I was comfortable with this screen size until I read Gregg’s comment.

It’s apparent from Gregg’s comment I need a smaller screen size to match the projectors capabilities. If I shrink the screen to 100” the screen calculator gives me a maximum seating distance of 13.6 feet.

My issue with shrinking the screen is I don’t want to lose the immersion effect. Shrinking the screen puts me outside the THX maximum recommended seating distance.

Maybe I’m being too picky and need to be happy with a 100” screen. After all it’s an 8.3’ screen. It appears with the couch shape, room dimensions and projector limits I will not be able to reach THX standards. I’m sure I will be happy when it’s done regardless.

The projector specs say it has 1600 lumens. Is this enough lumens for a 120” screen or is the main concern the degradation of the image at that size?

I would not go smaller in screen, go with the 119 or 120 even and pair it with the UB or the 6500. You could go with the Carada BW screen which claims 1.4 gain, which would give you more pop in your picture. The 1080UB would have no problem lighting up a screen at that size. Check out Carada screens as they should fit your budget and they also offer some of the best customer service out there.
