WHere's the "Time to throw down our top 10 of 2008" thread?

For old time's sake, here are the links to the previous years:

Our top of 2005

Our top of 2006

Our top of 2007

Okay here's my tentative list which will change for sure in the coming weeks.

1- THe Dark Knight
I was surprised how good it was despite the enormous hype. A great thriller that appeals even to those who don't like superhero movies. The Bat-Pod is the coolest scene I've seen in years.

2- Wall-E
Pixar are amazing. Each movie is better than the previous one. This one could have been filmed as a sci-fi drama and it would have worked.

3- Iron Man
Despite a so-so ending with a so-so villain, Robert Downey Jr absolutely is amazing and delivers the most entertaining performance of the year.

4- Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
My surprise of the year. Didn't like the first one too much, but this one as so much energy and is so much fun. Hellboy is the coolest hero of the year.

5- Revolutionary Road
The best acting I saw this year!

6- Cloverfield
I saw this as a truly amazing experience. Like the Blair Witch Project, I was able to convince myself that this was all true and was on the edge of my seat all along.

7- The Visitor
A movie I had no idea what it was about. Great subdued performances.

8- Burn after Reading
The funniest movie of the year. I particularily liked Malkovich in it.

9- Kung Fu Panda
A beautiful movie that I discovered on Blu-Ray.

10- Tropic Thunder
Somehow not as funny as I thought it would be, but a must see for Downey Jr and Cruise.

Guiltiest Pleasure: Mamma Mia!

Worst movie of the year: What Happens in Vegas

Most disappointing (but still entertaining): Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Still left to see (and will probably make the list): THe Wrestler, THe Curious Case of Benjamin BUtton

re: WHere's the "Time to throw down our top 10 of 2008" thread?

You just started it and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button tops my list. I'll have to think about what follows. I really haven't seen many films this year being busy as a first year daddy.

Hmm...

In no particular order:
The Dark Knight, Iron Man, HellBoy 2, WallE, Speed Racer, Cloverfield...

I'll have to come back with some more. I guess I only saw blockbusters this year. Oh well. I might as well just move out to the suburbs, purchase a riding lawnmower, and get real fat eating Mickey D's!

Cheers,

Jason

This is the time of year when I always regret not keeping on top of my annual Film List. The few years I made it to the end made crafting a top ten list much easier.

re: WHere's the "Time to throw down our top 10 of 2008" thread?

Down. It's "Throw Down".

I've seen very few movies this year, making the following list largely useless, but this would be my top 5, in order:

Slumdog Millionaire
Vicki Christina Barcelona
Gran Torino
Cloverfield
The Dark Knight

I've seen as many more flicks, that's it. But I look at the the '08 lists, and frankly, I don't feel too terrible, doesn't look like I've missed much, at least as far as the mainstream stuff goes. I intend the check out a few more, but that's it. There may have been tons of awesome indie/foreign flicks but I've not heard much there either.

Personally, this has been an "off year"...

re: WHere's the "Time to throw down our top 10 of 2008" thread?

The top two films for me aren't a surprise. They're The Dark Knight and Wall-E. Two blockbusters that remind me that when Hollywood gets it right they get it very right.

I wasn't as disappointed with the Indiana Jones movie that some seem to be here. I loved it.

My sentimental favorite was Milk. What a wonderful showcase for a very talented actor.

I also though Indiana Jones was entertaining, and upon multiple viewing, some of the irritants disappears (like the three fall or the groundhogs). I still can't get over Tarzan-Shia thought.

I really liked the sci-fi approach.

re: WHere's the "Time to throw down our top 10 of 2008" thread?

My votes may not count as much this year as in the past since I didn't see 10 films deserving of a place on a Best Of 2008 list. This year, it's a Top 7 list for me.

1. Wall-E
2. Bolt
3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars
4. The Dark Knight
5. Iron Man
6. The Forbidden Kingdom
7. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

re: WHere's the "Time to throw down our top 10 of 2008" thread?

Well, wonderful and terrible circumstances dramatically affected my theatrical experience in 2008. The wonderful part was the arrival of my first child at the very beginning of May. The terrible part was my family and I relocated away from Los Angeles to Durham, NC. So, this list is very incomplete and will more than likely change once I get out and see certain films, time permitting of course.

One thing I know that will not change and that's the number film on my list this year. Without further ado, here's the list.

The Dark Knight
My Blueberry Nights
Pixar’s Wall E
Gran Torino
Revolutionary Road
The Wrestler
Doubt
Nothing But The Truth
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
W.
Speed Racer

Honorable Mentions of 2008

Quantum of Solace
The Reader
Cloverfield
Tropic Thunder Director's Cut
Valkyrie
Seven Pounds
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

More than likely, The Reader, Frost/Nixon, Revolutionary Road, Gran Torino, and Slumdog Millionaire could dramatically alter this list.

EDIT (1.9.2009): Saw Gran Torino this past evening and it immediately shot up into the Top 5. For Eastwood, not as great as Unforgiven, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby or Letters from Iwo Jima, but damn, it's entertaining as hell. Probably the most fun I've had in the theatre since The Dark Knight.

EDIT (1.11.2009) Wasn't expecting to be taken that much by The Reader, but I was. Still, I really need to see it again for Kate Winslet's character. I think I've figured her out but I'm not entirely sure. But, a film worth seeing for sure. She should win the Oscar for Supporting Actress with this performance. It's just raw.

EDIT (1.12.2009) Revolutionary Road and The Wrestler make a serious dent into my Top Ten.

EDIT (1.25.2009) I thought I was done for the year until Meryl Streep blew up the list with Doubt. Stunning film and yet, I have to hate it a bit because Streep's performance will ultimately make Kate Winslet a six time Academy Award nominee without a win come February 22nd. I desperately want Kate Winslet to win an Oscar because she more than deserves it but Streep's performance in this film trumps Winslet's in the Reader by a wide margin. Everyone else is also excellent in this film.

EDIT 92.19.2009) Really, the last edit but it had to be made because of Lurie's Nothing But The Truth. Utterly fantastic. It changed my list from a Top Ten to a Top Eleven. It's that fantastic. Beckinsale and Fermiga were severely overlooked during the awards season.

The #1 Movie of the Year is ....

Go Speed, Go!!!

Nothing could compare to this movie, in terms of it's filmmaking and what I experienced in the theater while watching it. It's managed to hold up just as well, having seen it three times now.

Other of my favorites of 2008 in no order include:

  • The Wrestler

  • Vicky Cristina Barcelona

  • Ashes of Time Redux

  • Slumdog Millionaire

  • The Dark Knight
