Latex beds?

Wife and I are looking for a new bed and latex beds seem to be the new big thing in mattresses.

I don't like memory foam, but am told by sales people that latex is firmer, cooler, and easier to shift around in compared to memory foam, and an overall more comfortable sleep than a standard box/mattress.

The wife falls asleep within 5 minutes of her head hitting the pillow, so she couldn't care less what we buy so it's up to me.

Anyone here have opinions either way about latex beds?

I hope you're not allergic or things could get interesting.

Re: Latex beds?

My wife and I have a latex foam mattress. We have been absolutely thrilled with it. Our mattress is a Sealy SpringFree. It is incredibly heavy . . . the guys who delivered it said it was by far the heaviest queen mattress they had delivered that day. The wife and I can still rotate it pretty easily though, so it's not too bad.

I'm like you though, I've never been impressed with the memory foam. The latex mattresses have a unique feel to them, so definitely find one to try out before you buy. I don't think I'll ever go back to an inner-spring mattress though. My wife has to travel a lot for work and generally stays in nice places (generally 4-star or so), but always gets home-sick for our mattress. Latex mattresses also have the benefit of lasting longer . . . most come with a 20 year warranty.

My wife and I considered memory foam, latex, and the Sleep Number beds. We used a memory foam pad on our old inner-spring mattress and, though we liked its comfort, found it to be very heat retentive.

We decided to get a Sleep Number bed. I'm fifty years old, and it's honestly the best, most magnificent thing I've ever purchased in my life.

My first thought! I am highly allergic to latex.

My husband purchased a Sleep number bed this past year and I had the worst time sleeping on it. I literally went from 1-100 trying to find the right number. It was awful. My husband loved it! He found his perfect setting and was so happy. Basically I felt it was just a glorified air mattress.

Unfortunately for him, we couldn't keep it since I could not sleep on it. I did tell him that if he loved it so much, he could get a single and I would get a single mattress of my choosing, but he didn't like that idea. So we ended up going with the Ashcomb mattress..... BEST MATTRESS WE HAVE EVER SLEPT ON!

Re: Latex beds?

Thanks for the input!

Hmmm...I read allergies weren't an issue. Something about the latex not being of the same composition that we think of when we think allergies to latex. I need to look further at that.

Still, I even if that's not an issue, they all seem to come with regular foam pillow tops made of memory foam and that seems like it defeats the purpose for me as one who can't stand memory foam. And the price? Whoa.

Will check into the sleep number, thanks!

Seth, that's the one I looked at. Felt super comfortable. Is it easy to move around in? That's one of the things I don't like about memory foam...I sink to deep into it and find it difficult to shift.

Re: Latex beds?

I can assure you that it is NOTHING like memory foam. There is no issue of inhibiting movement at all. I would suggest that you stick with the firm or plush models and avoid the pillowtops for the latex models, but that is just my personal opinion.

The latex models are pretty pricey. I believe we got our mattress for around $1400 shipped. That isn't cheap, but it is less expensive than other "specialty" mattresses such as memory foam or sleep number mattresses.
