VHS to DVD recorders

I was wondering if you all could make some suggestions on good units. Here is what I am hoping to do with VHS material converted to DVD:

Chapters
and
If possible move around material before burning.

Hi,

If these VHS tapes are commercial movies, you will not be able to burn them due to macrovision.

For my home movies, I used a computer to capture and convert to DVD. This allowed me to edit the movies, make chapters and menus, and even make special DVDs from multiple tapes (like all birthdays, etc). Plus you can archive the raw footage on your hard drive. VHS tapes and DVDs don't last forever.

I used an ATI All-in-Wonder card and Vegas Video (home edition). You can get capture cards for less then $100.

No, not commercial movies. Just various little bits here and there I recorded off TV; unreleased comedy performances, parts of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", interviews with favorite comedians (etc), stuff like that.

You have a range of options regarding the selection of a DVD Recorder/VHS Recorder (side by side), or one with HDD (Hard Disc Drive I guess) where you can save it on the hard drive of the recorder, edit out commercials if need be then transfer to DVD. I know some players have Digital Noise Reduction or some kind of enhancer that helps clear up the video and that may be another thing to look for.

VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists - lots of great advice, discussion forums, "how-to" guides, etc. etc. etc. A Computer with a DVD writable drive and a capture device offers the most flexibility. A VHS/DVD writable component such as those made by Panasonic is probably the easiest.

Be aware - if you are thinking of computer capture there are lots of capture devices at varying price points on the market. Keep in mind that if your source is VHS, your source is of such a low quality that spending a lot of money on a high quality capture device may be overkill. I use a converter box that transforms a video input to DV, then sends that through firewire to my PC. Works fairly well for the sources I have converted (VHS, LD, S-VHS).
