I've actually had the opportunity to view the entire pilot episode of the new HAWAII FIVE-0, and as everyone here knows, I'm a HUUUGE fan of the old series and have been for 25 years (hell, I even have a website devoted to it). Anyway, here's my quick thoughts on the new pilot:
*The show it mostly bears a resemblance to is "24"
*Scott Caan steals the show and has by far the most interesting, likeable character (Danno); great love-hate chemistry with McGarrett
*Alex O' Loughlin (McGarrett) handles all the action scenes and stuntwork well, but has some acting trouble when it comes to scenes calling for him to make grim, angry speeches, doesn't really sound too convincing. I'm sure he will improve as he gets more comfortable with the role.
*Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park are both pretty good, but don't have much to do in the pilot (that will change, of course, down the road)
*Great action and scenery, but lousy rendition of the opening theme (although I've heard they've changed this). Music score in the episode is very weak, and rips off "Lost" at the very end.
All in all, I liked it enough to want to come back for more, and so I guess you can consider that a recommendation, but know that it is very much a modern-day type of show, and not too much like the old series, except for little tributes here and there (Jack Lord's Mercury makes an appearance).
Back to the DVDs: Season 9 is another home run for the CBS/P DVD folks. I love the new, smaller packaging (takes up much less shelf space) and it has a cardboard slipcover, making it look like a thin box instead of a plastic case, so that it matches up better with the previous sets when sitting on a shelf. They also re-did the menu music (using the season 9 version of the theme now instead of the season 1 version--I LOVE the Season 9 version, so I was very happy to see this change made). They also have some new menu animations that I liked. They've also included the 30-second teasers that were at the beginning of the shows starting with season 9, and have also included the 1-minute episodic promos, even though these are now a little redundant. The season itself is one of the series' very best, in my opinion, with a number of very strong episodes and great guest stars (like Ned Beatty, John Hillerman, Pat Hingle, Jack Kelly and more). Big thumbs up to CBS/P for this one!
