Technically that isn't true, as Law & Order isn't 100% a cop show. Yes, Hawaii Five-O had forensics and lawyer elements, but it was a cop show overall. NYPD Blue lasted twelve seasons, but Hawaii Five-O is technically still the longest running cop show.

And there is already a thread to discuss the show in, including the ninth season DVD set.

Gunsmoke is about a US Marshall hunting down criminals - thus that would be the longest running series about a lawman.

Are Law & Order and Hawaii Five-O solely about "a lawman"? Hawaii Five-O is still the longest running cop show. Gunsmoke is the longest running drama series.

Hawaii Five-O became a Sci-Fi show whenever McGarrett had to save the world from Wo Fat's plan.

The drama in Gunsmoke revolved around maintaining law in the wilderness.

Gunsmoke and L&O tied for the longest running drama series, but I give the edge to Gunsmoke because it had almost 180 more episodes during those 20 seasons (635 vs 456).

Gunsmoke also maintained cast integrity during those 20 seasons with Arness and Stone along for the entire ride and Blake along for 19 of those years.  Weaver and Curtis each spent about a decade on the show.

This is not a dig at L&O. To some extent the revolving door cast added a touch of realism and kept the characters fresh.  It also spawned a very formidable franchise of other shows.

Gunsmoke was the longest running western series, not cop series.

Hawaii Five-O became a scif-fi show?!

Either Amazon.com have got a huge amount of pre-orders to get packed up and ready for delivery/shipping, or there's some other delay in the ninth season set not having been sent out yet.

I got my e-mail notice of shipping on Friday and should have mine tomorrow.

I had an email from Amazon.com last night to say my copy of the Region 1 ninth season set had been shipped. I hope the tenth to twelfth seasons are released on DVD (both Regions 1 & 2).

Just finished "Nine Dragons".    Probably the high water mark of the series overall!

Nine Dragons is a great episode, because it also was the last we see of Wo Fat until the final episode.

My dvd is coming today, so, i am looking forward to seeing a few episodes tonight.

Just picked this season up today at my local BJ's warehouse club.  If anyone here is a member, they have a $15 off in-store coupon, located at the end-caps of the DVD displays, on the back page of the magazine.  Was able to get the set for $20.

So looking forward to watching 9 Dragons (and of course the rest of the shows)...

We interrupt your enjoyment of the Season 9 DVDs to bring you this new music video, a salute to Detective Truck (the late, great Moe Keale) from the ridiculous Season 12 of HAWAII FIVE-0.  It's called "Truck's Greatest Hits" (Truck was the only halfway intelligent addition to the team that season, despite the fact that a black cat seemed to cross his path in 4 of the 10 episodes or so that he appears in).

Hopefully this gets everyone excited about the (hopefully upcoming) Season 12 DVD release, which will hopefully be working it's way to us in the next year or 2 (after the next 2 releases, of course).

Enjoy...

Season 9 (Region 1) DVD set arrived in the post today. Surprised that I didn't have to pay customs charges.

Has anyone seen the trailers for the new Hawaii Five-O? It looks interesting, but, i doubt i will watch because to me there is only "ONE" Hawai Five-O and that is one starring Jack Lord.

I've actually had the opportunity to view the entire pilot episode of the new HAWAII FIVE-0, and as everyone here knows, I'm a HUUUGE fan of the old series and have been for 25 years (hell, I even have a website devoted to it).  Anyway, here's my quick thoughts on the new pilot:

*The show it mostly bears a resemblance to is "24"

*Scott Caan steals the show and has by far the most interesting, likeable character (Danno); great love-hate chemistry with McGarrett

*Alex O' Loughlin (McGarrett) handles all the action scenes and stuntwork well, but has some acting trouble when it comes to scenes calling for him to make grim, angry speeches, doesn't really sound too convincing.  I'm sure he will improve as he gets more comfortable with the role.

*Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park are both pretty good, but don't have much to do in the pilot (that will change, of course, down the road)

*Great action and scenery, but lousy rendition of the opening theme (although I've heard they've changed this).  Music score in the episode is very weak, and rips off "Lost" at the very end.

All in all, I liked it enough to want to come back for more, and so I guess you can consider that a recommendation, but know that it is very much a modern-day type of show, and not too much like the old series, except for little tributes here and there (Jack Lord's Mercury makes an appearance).

Back to the DVDs:  Season 9 is another home run for the CBS/P DVD folks.  I love the new, smaller packaging (takes up much less shelf space) and it has a cardboard slipcover, making it look like a thin box instead of a plastic case, so that it matches up better with the previous sets when sitting on a shelf.  They also re-did the menu music (using the season 9 version of the theme now instead of the season 1 version--I LOVE the Season 9 version, so I was very happy to see this change made).  They also have some new menu animations that I liked.  They've also included the 30-second teasers that were at the beginning of the shows starting with season 9, and have also included the 1-minute episodic promos, even though these are now a little redundant.  The season itself is one of the series' very best, in my opinion, with a number of very strong episodes and great guest stars (like Ned Beatty, John Hillerman, Pat Hingle, Jack Kelly and more).  Big thumbs up to CBS/P for this one!

I am glad that you like the pilot for the new show. However, i will not be watching the show, because in my eyes there is only one Steve McGarrett and that is Jack Lord. I will treasure my dvd collection of Hawaii Five-O, because in my opinion it is one of the best police drama ever produced.

I go back to 1974 with the original. I sat through all of season twelve the new version can't be much worse.

I'll be giving it a try.

Jeff, does Taryn Manning (who plays Mary Ann McGarrett in the pilot episode) have much screentime?

I do like this change CBS DVD have done to the main menu screen music. The animation change I thought was a nice change (the image of McGarrett coming towards you, rather than going off the right-hand side of the main menu screen).

While I will watch the 30 second teasers I am more interested in the one minute episodic promos narrated by Jack Lord.

No Richard, she has zero screentime in the version I saw--perhaps the scenes were cut for time.  She will be showing up later in the series though.

i watch a few of the episodes and the quality is very good. I am looking forward to S10-S12 being released. It is too bad that Hawaii Five-O kept changing the 4th officer, i.e Kano/Ben/Duke. I like Duke being moving to the team, but, i do miss Kano. Kano was good for the show early on.

I like the S9 episode with Wo Fat and with his demised. Then the ending show he was still alive!!

I'm hoping the remaining three seasons are released on Region 1 in 2011. We in the UK won't get the eighth season until March next year.

I thought it was fresh seeing a revamped menu screen for the ninth season (Region 1) set. Hoping CBS DVD/CBS Paramount use the tenth season version of the theme tune for the next DVD season set.

I have watch several episodes and the quality is very good. I like the Wo Fat episode, because this is the last time we will see him until the final episode. I like to see danny williams do some extras in the remaining seasons (10-12). Danno is the only original cast member still alive.

Hopefully there will be some news about the tenth season of the orignal Hawaii Five-O TV series before the end of the year (would be great if it's released at the start of next year).

You can always check the following site: http://www.mjq.net/fiveo/. This site has been very reliable in the past around what is happening with dvd releases. I like to see Hawaii Five-O completed next year.
