Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond - Page 8

Richard - it is the standard cardboard case with three slim plastic slipcases. Nothing wrong with the Season premiere episode.

Are there any Spanish subtitles in this eight season DVD-set?

  Thanks in advance.

I'd read on the Hawaii Five-O Home Page guestbook that "Murder - Eyes Only" is the only episode in the eighth season R1 set which dosen't have a Jack Lord episodic promo. Disappointed by this as I was really hoping there wass going to be one for this episode. Never mind, there are still promos for the other 22 episodes. So to date the seventh season set is the only one which has had Jack Lord episodic promos for all of the episodes in it's DVD boxset.

Thanks so much for the photo of Hawii Five-O's 8th season rear box art! It looks like a fun and interesting season! I was somewhat disappointed by the episodes in the 7th season. Those episodes didn't seem to be as good a quality as the first six seasons. But I think I remember really enjoying some of the episodes in the 8th season. Does anyone recall whether they enjoyed the 7th season or the 9th season better? What were your favorite episodes in the 8th season?

The only subtitles for the season 8 DVD set are English.

... just watched the first episode last night, it looks quite good, Murder-Eyes Only ...

The opening fifteen minutes of this show are absolutely incredible as far as production values (not to mention the photography) are concerned with locations at Pearl Harbor, plus ships on the high seas, and military airplanes and helicopters landing and taking off (the show was filmed with the co-operation of the U.S. Navy and Department of Defence). There are no models or projected backdrops -- this is all the real McCoy, making this episode look like it cost millions of dollars to produce!

I have updated my "anal-ysis" of almost all the eighth season shows on my site, by the way:

Per danno13's question, I think many would agree that season 9 is better than season 7--it is the last of the quality seasons for the show, although 10 has it's moments.

Picked up season 8 this morning and skimmed through most of the shows, which I haven't seen in some time.  Overall, I think season 8 is an improvement over season 7, with better guest stars (Ed Asner, Donna Mills, Susan Dey, Dan O' Herlihy, Lew Ayres (1st appearance since the pilot), George Takei, John Colicos, Pat Hingle, Charles Durning, Adam Arkin, Helen Heyes), and of course several strong episodes at the top of the season to kick things off.  Additionally, McGarrett has ditched the awful cream-colored suit and jet black hair dye (he doesn't seem quite so pasty as in the last few seasons).  In fact, the sideburns seem a little shorter, the suits are a little less garish, and the music scores are very good.

The 2-hour opener, as Mister Mike mentioned, has great production values and is a good espionage thriller with Wo Fat, although he doesn't seem to have much to do other than sit around on his hydrofoil and let his henchman handle all the dirty work.

Other great episodes include "McGarrett is Missing" wherein he survives a plane crash in the jungle with a convict from season 2; "Death's Name is SAM" in which terrorists attempt to blow up a jetliner using surface-to-air missiles; "The Case Against McGarrett" features McGarrett being held hostage in prison by Honore Vashon, and is the wrap-up to the season 5 Vashon trilogy; "Retire in Sunny Hawaii Forever" features Helen Hayes as Danno's aunt investigating murder at a retirement home;  "The Defector" is another great espionage thriller involving a Red Chinese agent; "Deadly Persuason" features a psycho out to murder the visiting royal family; "A Touch of Guilt" is about a senator's son who's involved in a gang rape.   I think overall there are fewer lousy episodes this season than season 7.

Some other observations about the DVD set itself:
-The song used in "Sing a Song of Suspense" is intact
-The disclaimer on the box from previous seasons, "Some episodes may be edited from their original network versions", is NOT on the box this time around.
-They use the same shot of Danno and Duke on both the front and the back of the box
-Either I'm getting used to it, or the JL picture on the front of the box looks better than it did in the web artwork.  Maybe they touched it up a tad so it didn't look quite so photoshopped.
-It's interesting that inside the disc cases, they have another new nighttime shot of downtown Honolulu, again looking very modern like the season 7 cover shot.

4 more seasons to go, and season 9 (hopefully coming sometime this summer) is another winner.  Thanks CBS-P!

Excellent post Jeff and thanks for sharing your observations on the Region 1 eighth season set.

Now that is peculiar, there not being the standard "Some episodes may be edited from their original network versions" disclaimer on the rear boxart. And yet CBS DVD haven't called the set "The Complete Eighth Season". When Granada Plus repeated Hawaii Five-O at the end of most of the episodes a Viacom logo was shown on screen with a voiceover saying "Viacom". Now I haven't watched any of the DVDs yet, but I assume a "CBS Television" logo is shown at the end of all of the episodes released on Region 1 and Region 2 DVD to date. But with Hawaii Five-O it isn't an issue whether CBS DVD have put a "CBS Television" logo at the end of Hawaii Five-O, as whenever I saw it on Granada Plus there was never a logo like Desilu, Lorimar or Paramount for example.

Which episode is the picture of McGarrett wearing the red jacket from (seen on the rear boxart)?

Is the episode Sing a Song of Suspense the only episode in the eighth season which had a song or songs which could have been altered for music issues reasons?

i have started watching S8 of Hawaii Five-O and do have an issue with the re-mastered image. The image does not appear to be as crisp as previous seasons. I am still enjoying the series, because it is one of my all time favourites.
I am watching S8 upconverted to 1080p on a Blu-ray player on a 46" plasma, and I actually think S8 looks sharper and less grainy than several of the previous seasons.  This could have more to do with the film stock they shot on back then, which I suspect changed throughout the show's run, and also with how the film was processed back then.  I don't really think the remastering has changed during the DVD releases, as really the resolution looks the same throughout each.  I also suspect the earliest seasons looked brighter and more colorful simply because shows in the late 60's in the early days of color TV seemed to go crazy with lots of bright colors (Star Trek, Five-0, Lost in Space, Gilligan's Island, etc.).

Wavecrest, the red jacket is from the 1st Sandi Welles episode, "Loose Ends Get Hit".  As far as I know, there are no other songs featured in Season 8, and the awful song from "Sing a Song of Suspense" was quite possibly written for the show, performed by the actress hired for the show, and therefore owned by CBS themselves.  Just a guess, though.

I have really been enjoying the new music scores from many of the season 8 episodes.  Morton Stevens, Bruce Broughton and Don B. Ray, the music supervisor of Season 8, introduced a number of music cues in season 8 that I really enjoyed (most of them didn't seem to get used in further seasons unfortunately). In fact, I think season 8 was one of the very best seasons for consistently great new musical scores.

Off the top of my head, I liked the climactic score at the end of 'Murder Eyes Only' (boat chase), the music during the prison break of McGarrett is Missing, the new Five-0 theme reprise at the very end of McGarrett is Missing (which was used to wrap up other episodes as well later in the season), the music during the car chase at the end of Capsule Kidnapping and Death's Name is Sam (both involved them chasing planes on runways), the theme that was used throughout Love Thy Neighbor Take His Wife (and used again in season 9's episode "Man on Fire), the reprise of the Vashon themes in 'The Case Against McGarrett', the hang-gliding score from the beginning of "Turkey Shoot" (very reminiscent of season 9's "Nine Dragons') and many others that I haven't revisited yet but vaguely remember as being from season 8.

Alas, the new version of the Hawaii Five-0 opening credits theme for season 8 is somewhat forgettable, as I think Mike indicated as well in a posting. However, season 9 (coming soon) is one of my favorite versions of the theme, with the booming drum beats at the very beginning and lots of deep percussion.

I had read some observations on Mike's guestbook page that on the whole the remastering is excellent with the eighth season set.

Did they use the ninth season version of the theme tune for the tenth season, because the way you describe the ninth season version I've heard that for a tenth season episode? I'm sure it was a video clip on YouTube.

Also, the running time for the ninth season episodes (with the exception of the season premiere "Nine Dragons") may be longer because of the 30 second promo shown at the start of the current new episode, in addition to the Jack Lord episodic promo for the next episode shown before/after the end credits of the current new episode. With regards to the running time of the eighth season episodes, and with the exception of the season premiere "Murder - Eyes Only", do they appear to be uncut? Steve said on the Guestbook page that "Murder - Eyes Only " is nearly 100 minutes long and appears to be uncut.

Thanks for answering my question about the image of McGarrett on the rear boxart.

Going back to the seventh season...still no update for when my copy of the R2 seventh season set is being posted. It was still saying "Not yet despatched" earlier today.

I'd love to know who keeps marking my Play.com and Amazon.co.uk reviews as not helpful. If I knew who was doing it I'd return the favour and do the same to them. See how they like it. It's probably because I'm giving them the DVD sets 5 out of 5 most of or all of the time. But I'm giving the seasons excellent reviews.

Also, sadly the Region 2 set of the eighth season of Hawaii Five-O has been delayed from Monday 10th May, 2010 to Monday 25th October, 2010. The new date is on Amazon.co.uk's listing page for the DVD set, but Play.com's listing page still has the May release.

The exact same thing happened when Play.com put an end of November release date last year for the seventh season set. It could have come out two months after the sixth season set, but then CBS DVD delayed the set till this month. I think Amazon.co.uk didn't put up a seventh season R2 set release date until the new one appeared on Play.com's listing page. But with the eighth season R2 set both websites put the same release date of Monday 10th May on their listing pages.

I was not crazy about season 7. I felt that there was a dip in quality from the previous seasons. I just got season 8 and only watched the first episode, Murder-Eyes Only, and it was a great episode. I am looking forward to the rest of the season.

My copy of the Season 7 set arrived in the post earlier today. The episode titles are in yellow, compared to yellow in the Region 1 boxset. CBS DVD have dropped a clanger with the episode synopsis' on the inside of the DVD sleeve. The season finale "6,000 Deadly Tickets" has the episode synopsis for "30,000 Rooms and I Have the Key".

Is there a website where you can see which Hawaii Five-O episodes had Jack Lord episodic promos?

Mike Quigley has posted news on The Hawaii Five-O Home Page website (and on it's guestbook) about the ninth season.

I might get season 8 as well as season 9 on Region 1 at this rate, as the UK will be two seasons behind the US if season 9 does come out in early Augest. And hopefully this time there will be a Jack Lord episodic promo for the feature length season premiere ("Nine Dragons"). I don't know if they will be included in the season 9 DVD set as well, but starting with season 9, as well as the Jack Lord episodic promos there were 30 second teasers before the start of the episode.

And this set should be a 6 disc set again with 23 episodes in total (1 x feature length episode and 22 x one hour episodes). IF the tenth season is released, then that should be the last season spread over 6 discs.

I'm thinking that #12 (if that one comes out) will be a 5-disc set, based on that there were only 19 episodes in that season; the first four discs would hold 4 episodes apiece, and the last disc would hold the last 3, as per my calculations.

While I won't hold my breath for it on the season 12 set's last disc, it would be nice if they featured the 1997 pilot, or "Bored She Hung Herself", or the pilot of the new series, which will possibly be launching next fall.

It would be a neat idea (and there would be plenty of room for them) if they included the following on the last disc of a possible twelfth season set:

1. "Bored, She Hung Herself" transferred to HD (including a Jack Lord episodic promo (transferred to HD as well) if there was one)

2. The 1997 pilot starring Gary Busey (this has a total running time of I'm guessing 45-48 minutes?)

3. The 2010 revival pilot (a total running time of 42-45 minutes?)

4. M Station: Hawaii pilot (a total running time of around 90-95 minutes?)

I'd also like to see, although this will be very doubtful as I read on here or on the Guestbook that not even collectors have copies of this series....Khan!, starring Khigh Dheigh in an uncredited lead role, on DVD.

The 2010 revival pilot could be included as a DVD extra in the season 9 set if it does get released in August. If the revival of the show makes it to a second season a first season DVD set would be released I'm guessing between May and September of next year. So if the tenth season was released in the first half of next year the 2010 revival pilot would more likely be included as a DVD extra in a tenth season set. That's just a theory.

I wanted to post a URL link to an IMDb page with a Jack Lord promo picture from I think the 1976-77 season. This is my favourite Jack Lord picture and the one I'd like to see CBS DVD use for the season 9 front cover, even though it's not a head and shoulders shot of him. I posted the URL link to it on the Hawaii Five-O Home Page guestbook, but I can't get the Import URL thing to work on here.

I never understood leaving "Bored She Hung Herself" out of the Season 2 release. I keep hoping it might show up on one of the later season releases, too. Or would CBS/P do a Hawaii Five O complete series release with that episode restored to the Season 2 portion of the set?

They very well could; you never know. On the other hand, they may, considering that "Bored" was omitted from the #2 release, consider it omitted from the possible complete release (which might disqualify that release from using the word "complete"). Of course, that would probably inflame some purists.

Unfortunately, in the TV on DVD world, "Complete" does not always mean "Complete". And CBS/P has a history of leaving something out of the season by season releases, only to stick it in a complete series set after the initial run. AFAIK it has only been follow up TV movies, or some extra bonus material, not an actual season episode. Omitting an episode of a "Complete" series release would, I believe, cause an uproar.

At any rate, once the Hawaii Five O run is done, I want to have all of the episodes, including "Bored".

Great point. Considering what you said, it's a good thing that CBS didn't use the word "Complete" on their "Fugitive" releases (not only because they were volumes to begin with, but with all the music substitution as well[in the form of Mark Heyes]). It is also good on Paramount that their #2 "Happy Days" was not called "Complete," but rather was called "The Second Season," because if Paramount had called it "Complete" even with music subs, the outcry would be more brutal than it originally was. FOX, however, did not learn this lesson, and referred to its "Fall Guy" and "WKRP" releases as "Complete," notwithstanding the music subs. Anchor Bay made that mistake as well with the #1 "Roseanne," calling it "Complete" despite syndie outings.
The "Bored" release may never happen.  A while back, Rose Freeman (wife of deceased Five-0 creator Leonard Freeman) had indicated that someone tried the hanging stunt seen in the show, and died.  Now, any legal ramifications that came out of this are not available to the public, but it's certainly possible that if there was any kind of settlement or agreement between the parties involved, those settlements/agreements may still apply today.  Which is to say it's possible that the episode has been suppressed and cannot be made available (syndication, DVD, etc.).  Hopefully this is not the case, and we may see it released someday.

I've seen this episode (from the collector's market), and honestly it is downright horrible, one of the worst episodes ever.  In fact, I would be hard-pressed to think of many season 12 shows that are worse than this one.  Maybe that's why they're hiding it.  :)

Also, I think CBS-P started dropping the "Complete" season references around the same time they started including the legal disclaimer on (most) releases that says something to the effect of  "Music may have been changed for this home video version".

I can concur that the episode is horrible, by far the worst one of Five-O's early seasons.     The title itself is a misnomer since the premise is a murder from the outset, and then there are other things so incredibly bizarre (John Newland's unbilled cameo and the ridiculously peppy ending moment) that it makes the episode a quintessential "once was enough" experience!

I actually just transferred the episode from a 16mm print not long ago. The color is a bit faded but it now looks 1000 times better than the one floating around that looks like it was shot off a wall with a video camera. Horrible episode by the way, one of the worst of the series.

Brent in post #208 posted a picture of the rear boxart for the Region 1 eighth season set, which didn't have the "some episodes may be edited from their original network versions" disclaimer.

I forgot all about this possible DVD extra for a possible twelfth season set -

the full length version of that documentary which was on the first season set, co-presented by James MacArthur.

Also, who owns the rights to the films/TV films The Counterfeit Killer, The Name of the Game is Kill and Cry Murder, and the documentary narrated by Jack Lord called The Whales That Wouldn't Die?
