I have my cable box and Blu Ray player connected via my receiver to my lcd tv using hdmi cables. Is there a setting (or combination of settings) that will allow me to get sound and picture to my display with the receiver in standby?

Sony BD 350 Blu Ray player
Sony STR-DG820 receiver
Scientific Atlatic Cable box
Sony W4500 lcd display

Thanks and seasons greetings

Re: HDMI connections

No, that is the problem with connecting everything through an AVR; if it is "off" nothing goes to the TV. A better plan, if your TV has multiple HDMI inputs (most have 2), is to connect your AVR to one of the inputs and connect your cable box to the second HDMI input. (Connect the Blu-ray player to the AVR since you will always want to use its audio capability when watching movies.)

For cable box 5.1 audio, connect it via either optical or coax to your AVR. These recommendations will provide the following options:
1. Cable box video & audio directly to the TV when you just want to watch the news or other "audio poor" programming.
2. Cable box audio to your audio system for 5.1 progamming.
3. Blu-ray player always passed through your AVR to grab whatever audio format that your AVR is capable of.
