I have since added a number of Blu titles to my library, and I still put BR in to show off the system to visiting family and friends.

Those opening minutes of the film are, to me, utterly stunning in Blu-ray. Both image and sound.

I put in BR in *SD* to demonstrate just how good SD can be (not upscaled even), then the BD version. IMO you wouldn't sell a lot of BD setups with 50-60" flat panel screens that way LOL, with a PJ a different story. So it was the SD BR that was OMG! for me, when I bought the BD afterwrds it was already old hat...being impressed is such a fleeting thing these days...

I'll throw in my vote for the Kill Bill's also -- the first one especially knocked my socks off.

RE: the Bond titles, I think FYEO is deceptively good. It has this seemingly dreamy soft contrast quality to it, but is actually pretty sharp (and detailed) in a natural looking way whereas I thought Dr. No looks unnaturally sharp (and clean and not quite as detailed, IMHO). Then again, much of the diffs there might just be the film stocks used along w/ intended looks (w/ some Lowry processing thrown in). The Connery Bonds definitely have the hotter/bolder contrast and colors, especially Dr. No and From Russia w/ Love -- and the latter is definitely less detailed than FYEO, IMHO.

That's a good choice, but so is "Casablanca". It's like watching it for the first time all over again.

excellent choice!

There are so many scenes that stand out. For me it's when they're on the island and they meet Ursula Andress (no need to describe how hot she looks in high-def) but Connery is wearing these blue pants. I couldn't believe how clear they were they literally popped of the screen. Also the vegetation on the island and colors of the water on the beach look amazing too.!!

PS You could even see Connery's tattoo throughout. It looks like a ship anchor on his right forearm. It's as if the filmakers didn't even try to hide it

Another film that blew me away the first time I saw it was "The Shining".

I thaught it look amazing!! The slow dolly shots throughout the hotel really made those ugly pastel colors from the late 70's stand out.

"The Gauntlet" is also one of my favorite OMG moments. It may not rank up there with some of the other titles mentioned earlier but watching the film I had a big smile on my face and kept saying to myself "sh!t this thinkg looks great"

Thanks for all the ideas every one. My fiancée did get me a PS3 and the one BD movie she got was the new Mummy movie. The whole family can watch that one, so I think it will be a good first movie.

I'll need to start slowing updating my collection with BD, is there a place to get them at lower costs??

The one that impresses me most from an eye-candy perspective is "Tinkerbell"! Not as detailed/textured as the Pixar stuff, the way the colors pop and light effects work (the glow of the pixie-dust in particular just explodes off the screen) is amazing. Combined with my High Power screen, the effect is stunning.

Thanks Jack, one of the girls really likes Tinkerbell, so will have to look into that one as well.

I've not been able to find Sin City... I don't own it already and think it was a cool movie. I did pick up the last Pirates of the Carribian today along with Ratatoulli, Wall E, and Star Wars The Clone War for the girls.

Re: Sin City.

You would have to order it from Amazon.ca or some other Canadian Mail order outfit. It was released in Canada but not the U.S. I believe the U.S release has been delayed. The Canadian release is the theatrical version with a DTS HD MA soundtrack. The disc is a movie only release....zero extras.

Re: What's the best "OMG WOW!" movie?

I have recommendations in three categories of this type: 1)CGI/animation: Any of the Pixar and Disney classics, such as "Sleeping Beauty" on BD; 2)CGI/live action combined: "The Dark Knight" & "Superman Returns", "Live Free Or Die Hard"; 3)Classic live action only: "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" on BD(I've never seen a better version of this action classic from 1938, featuring Errol Flynn at his absolute zenith!

I'm not much for the extras, so movie only would be fine with me. Not sure what all the DTS HD MA stuff really means though.

DTS HD MA stands for DTS High Definition Master Audio. It is a losslessly compressed audio standard as opposed to the lossy audio standard that is used on DVDs. Basically, the source soundtrack is compressed in such a manner that no bits from the source track are dropped or lost when the soundtrack is stored on a BD. Theoretically a losslessly compressed soundtrack should be completely transparent to the source when it is unpacked and played back.

In order to listen to a losslessly compressed track you have to have a receiver that is equipped with an HDMI input and/or multi-channel analog inputs. The BD player has to be able to decode the DTS HD MA or Dolby TrueHD tracks internally or be able to bitstream the raw data to a receiver that is able to decode lossless formats.

If your receiver is equipped only with an optical or coaxial audio input then the lossless track is essentially downconverted to a lossy format. In the case of DTS HD MA a "core" lossy DTS track is extracted and played back over the optical/coax input at 1500 Kb/s. Dolby does it a different way and the transmission rate is 640 Kb/s over the optical/coax input. Both of these rates are considerably higher than standard def DVD rates for audio.

Theoretically, a lossless track should sound better than the equivalent lossy track, but whether it does or not is going to be entirely dependent on how sensitive and good ones hearing is.

Blade Runner is my favorite movie, I wouldn't recommend it to show off your Hi-Def system. While it looks and sounds great, it still isn't a jaw dropping experience that the above movies will provide.
I would disagree with this comment. Like Dion, Blade Runner was the first Blu-Ray film I watched. I had watched some TV the previous night, including one or two HD shows, and they didn't impress me, so I was starting to regret my purchase. And then I watched Blade Runner, and within a minute or so, by the point where we get the close-up shot of the eye, I was completely won over. It may not be the absolute best picture out there, but it is incredibly beautiful and striking, and I am glad it was my first Blu-Ray film.

We borrowed the SD of Speed Racer and then got the BD. There is a HUGE difference in PQ!

Re: What's the best "OMG WOW!" movie?

I still think Zodiac HDDVD is way up there in the High Def PQ dept.

For Blurays - Wall-E, and Kung Fu Panda floored me. The PQ on KFP is stellar and I was suprised how much I enjoyed the film(I grew up on Shaw Bros martial arts movies). I usually dont complain about extras, but I REALLY wish theyd put the Sercrets of the Furious Five 25min short on the bluray.

Others:
Hellboy2 THe Golden Army
Corpse Bride
The Dark Knight (The Imax scenes)
Kill Bill
Nightmare Before Christmas (The Xmas Land scenes)

Also check out Band Of Brothers for beautiful grain in HD

I *almost* didn't buy the movie for that reason. Leaving extras off HD editions is truly obnoxious.

For me it was Sleeping Beauty -- unreal!

Can't wait to check out The Searchers and The Day the Earth Stood Still, as recommended above.
