Re: HTF DVD REVIEW: Mamma Mia! 2-Disc Special Edition
Although I haven't watched my copy yet, I felt I had to post SOMETHING so you didn't feel like your review went unnoticed! Let's face it: "Mamma Mia!" is NOT high art (either as a musical or a movie), but that's not what it aspires to be. It wants to be fun, enjoyable entertainment which it delivers in spades. Meryl Streep looks like she could not have been having a better time and that REALLY shines through. As with any musical, there is an energy in live theater that, if you are lucky, you can reproduce onscreen. I came away from seeing this movie just as I did after seeing the stage version several times...with a huge smile on my face!My only complaint with the movie itself is that what should have been the two big "production" numbers ("Voulez-Vous" and "Lay All Your Love On Me") felt rather cramped and "small"; they did a great job of opening up the story's locations (they were stunning!) but these two numbers were missed opportunities.
Re: HTF DVD REVIEW: Mamma Mia! 2-Disc Special Edition
Thank you Eric. I was starting to count the crickets. (Don't ask what number I got to...)Back in the day I worked on several stage musicals, including productions of GUYS AND DOLLS and BYE BYE BIRDIE. The energy from the musical numbers can indeed be infectious.
When you look at the disc, take some time to watch the brief featurette on the second disc on "Lay All Your Love on Me". They did a little more than one might think in putting that on film. Felt to me that the numbers they really pulled out the stops for were "Dancing Queen" and the big finale.

Re: HTF DVD REVIEW: Mamma Mia! 2-Disc Special Edition
I don't buy DVDs unseen any longer, been burned to many times, but think I will probably break my rule this time.Loads of Costco gift cards burning a hole in my pocket. Add to that the show has been on stage since 1999 and surpassed the gross of "Titanic" in England and it can't be all that bad.
I need a dose of just good, silly, mindless fun and this looks like the way to go. Plus I love Meryl Street, and will even publicly admit I like ABBA, so looks like it's meant to be.

We watched about the first half of this last night after a family dinner. Two people watching with us are positive there was at least one scene either cut or shortened on the DVD vs the theatrical release.
Is this possible?
Re: HTF DVD REVIEW: Mamma Mia! 2-Disc Special Edition
I have no idea if that happened. I didn't see any indications of it - I believe that what is on the DVD is what was in the theaters, plus the extras and bonus features.I'd be curious if anyone knew what they thought was cut.

Saw Momma Mia over the holidays with my wife and 2 daughters. They loved it, I thought it was goofy. Only redeeming factor was the film was very visually appealing.

Re: HTF DVD REVIEW: Mamma Mia! 2-Disc Special Edition
Great review, thanks. It was interesting to compare to the 1-disc R2 version I bought, which seems to have about the same extras, but all on one disc. Not that it seemed to affect PQ much...I saw this in the theater with my GF, our daughter (13 yrs) and her friend, same age. I was one of very few males in the auditorium. My GF, who is not an ABBA fan, didn't care much for it, the rest of us loved it, as did most of the rest of the audience. This is a definition of feel-good movie, it makes you happy and warm all over. It was just as good to re-watch at home.
I haven't tried the sing-along feature yet, but fear I will, someday, be forced...
