Good grief, there's a bunch of whiners on this board.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

Presumably this batch of titles is not aimed at our demographic - but at all the Joe Sixpacks who will presumably get a Blu-ray player for Christmas. Average Joe doesn't want Badlands, Barry Lyndon or even Doctor Zhivago.

Which is why they haven't been released yet.

I think it's cool that Warner is getting some of their catalogue titles out. Personally I'm in for a few of those.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

I've been wondering if Final Destination would be on Warner's list of priorities. Good to see at least the original on WB's radar. I'll probably get that, Wedding Singer and American History X.

THESE are coming, but still no date for the blu GIGI or AMERICAN IN PARIS? WB has really lost it for me.

Most likely in March.

I'm glad to be finally getting "Tango and Cash" as anamorphic. I've been waiting for that since I got a widescreen TV seven years ago

To reiterate the point I made at another forum: It's really annoying that you guys are entering freakout mode over this press release for a couple titles 4 months away. Warner's not going to tie their announcements of big classic titles like Ben-Hur, Gigi, or American in Paris to brainless Steven Segal and Governator releases. They've announced that those classics coming in 2009, and Warner hasn't even finished announcing February and March titles yet.

Put down the pitchforks, please.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

Sorry about the whining, but these two titles are especially annoying. The new versions have been out on SD for a while. Both blus are done. They're out overseas now, and being reviewed as imports, and still no U.S. release even announced.

I think these two titles will be the next ones I purchase from WB. If they want to delay them further, fine, I'll keep my money.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

I don't understand all the hate for this list, you guys will get your fancy schmancy classics in time but for now let Segal have his turn.

I'll be taking Tango & Cash (yummy, young Teri Hatcher before she got her own hit show and became pretentious), John Q (yeah it's manipulative but it makes me cry dammit), The Wedding Singer and Final Destination.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

Tango & Cash and Above the Law are definitely going to be mine ... providing they come equipped with True HD tracks.

I may also spring in for 2010 and, gulp, Taking Lives.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

See I feel a bit like most people, let me explain.

I am actually happy about these releases, I want at least 5 of these for sure and maybe up to 6-7.

However these can be found in my local Wal-Mart's 2 for $10 bin. I would even be willing to pay double for these to get them on BD for the 1080p24 transfer.

However anything over $10 and these will stay on the shelf for me. Just can't justify even $12.99 for these. I have plenty of releases I have not even gotten around to. $20 is really my limit for BDs.

But I am glad these are out. It means one day I will get them for $10 or less. Might not be on release but sooner or later... bargain bin for sure.

Yes. After all, why hurry to get out titles that appeal to the wallets of our demographic. It's not like we're dying out or moving towards a fixed income. Right?

Then again, is the average Joe upgrading to Blu-Ray to watch Tango & Cash on his 22" set?

If so, what a world, what a world.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

+1 on 2010.

I saw a pretty good looking HD broadcast of it on HDNet earlier in the year, same for some of the others titles. If I had to guess, I'd say that it's these particular titles as opposed to some of the others mentioned, because the HD transfers already existed.

WB may not have a suitable HD master of Barry Lyndon. The previous DVD was non-anamorphic and I can't recall ever seeing it on an HD channel. I'd love to be wrong, though.

Looks like I'm saving some money on this batch.....that's a sure-fire 0-10 for me.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

I'm rather disappointed to see so many complaints about this batch of releases. I am personally interested in only a couple of these titles, but I consider it a good thing to see any movie released on Blu-ray, whether it's one I'm interested in or not. I agree with Joe Karlosi that it's especially encouraging to see so many "ordinary" catalogue titles being announced, and not just the "big" titles that we all know will come out eventually, anyway.

I might not want to own every title on Blu-ray, but you won't catch me posting in a thread devoted to some upcoming release just to ask "why bother?" Doesn't the HTF usually frown upon that sort of "threadcrapping"?

Carl,

It would be one thing if a HTF member posted a thread saying 'I'm excited about some titles coming our way.' This is not that. This is a press announcement. It's open season to comment on that announcement.

I understand your viewpoint. Please understand mine. WHV puts out a press announcement and HTF Ownership posts it. They do it to get a reaction. Cause and effect. There is no guarantee as to what that reaction will be. That's the chance they take.

If that's not what ownership wants, just post these press releases locked. If not, they need to take the pro with the con.

Fair?

I just never understand this mentality that people cannot or should not express their displeasure with a product, or proposed releases, or what have you. So we have to accept and like everything? I mean, I personally at least think this dipping into more offbeat catalogue titles for Blu-ray is a positive step in the right direction, though I think the selection is pretty underwhelming.

Totally fair. Very well said.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

I will definitely pick up 2010 and I do not feel $20 is too high a price for a title in Hi-Def as long as the transfer is faithful and not manipulated by the studio.

Later Everyone

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

I'm down for 2010 (yeah!!!), JOHN Q. and AMERICAN HISTORY X (bummer that the rumored director's cut won't be making its debut, though). No complaints here, though I always chuckle at finding Seagal movies at the top of any studios' release lists.

I see it as sour grapes, and I see it as counterproductive. Studio A announced 10 titles, and they get nothing but complaints. Guess what? After 12 years of seeing nothing but people complain on HTF when they announce something, stating your opinion here means NOTHING to the studios anymore. Isn't that wonderful.

What's so hard about coming into a thread, seeing some announcements that you won't personally buy, and saying, at worst, "Well, nothing that interests me, but I hope others are satisfied, and I hope this means the titles I want will see similar treatment."

Seagal's movies are getting released for one simple reason: they've always been big sellers on video.

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

I can only presume these titles are being released to seed the "look, Blu-ray isn't expensive" racks and the bargain bins of the future. I am quite fine with that, just as I was when these titles started hitting the DVD bargain bins several years ago. Other studios have already done this with some BD titles, and yes I have bought a few. Sometimes a low-enough price makes you turn off the brain...

Re: WHV Announcement: 10 New Blu-ray Titles coming April 2009

Not sure about the "now more afforable than ever" tagline. Amazon's pre-order listings for these have MSRPs of $28.99. Isn't that Warner's standard pricing for non-SE catalog BDs?

First of all, the studio didn't get, nor do any of the studios ever always get, "nothing but complaints" when it comes to feedback. But I like to think that the studios are actually big grownup boys and understand and can take a little criticism. That's part of running a business, listening to the customers. And it's not always about stroking their egos, though I do so when I feel it's deserved.

Well, that's in essence what I did in my original posting. But people are different and others may wish to voice themselves in another way. It would be wonderful if we were all pre-programmed robots and all behaved exactly alike and never stepped on each others' toes, but...

My way of thinking is these titles were going to be released on Blu someday, what difference does it make if it's now or later?

Because in the long run, we're all dead.

Personally, I don't know whether the Blu-Ray format will be viable for 6 months or 6 years but it seems reasonable to me to concentrate on titles that will be big sellers in the hi-def format. Now if the answer to that is John Q then they should release John Q. Personally, if I wanted John Q in my library I'd buy the SD-DVD version for 49 cents (plus shipping) on Amazon Marketplace upconvert it on my player and call it a day. But that's just me.
