Robert,

Thanks. That does make a difference.

true , though having lived in times without internet/message boards, no cells and with...I'll take the without. The world is not a better place for any of those things. They are necessary evils now, either keep up with technology or be left behind. Giving every a-hole on the planet a voice is not a good thing. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

Really? The movie ended with all the stuff dead and stranded, nothing movie, all the lights out.. they gave no indication at all that it was temporary.
I thought I saw the lights and energy coming back on, but I could be mis-remembering

Hmm. I just remember all of the people around Big Ben getting out of their cars and walking around, and the last shot (I thought) was a set of Oil Tankers stranded not-moving toward a dock.

I have a feeling neither of us is going to go back to see what was actually happening there.

No, I sure won't. I will leave it as an unsolved mystery I don't care that much about resolving

Saw this with my sister’s kid. Not as mediocre as I expected. Actually it was kinda fun movie (with a "message" also) and Keanu was decent in the lead role. Not a "great" film by any means, though.

Sister’s kid loved it, btw.

A well made, phenomenally stupid movie. At some level, the writer must be making the point about how on average, humanity is quite stupid -- which is true -- but I'm not sure we're that stupid.

If there ever is first contact, I hope commanders remind their troops not to fire just because they get nervous. Wait for the order; it might be really important.

Not all good. Quite aggressive. And stupid.

I guess the aliens want us to not destroy the planet. And so, making sure we have no electricity and they've destroyed/killed a giant swath of population worldwide helps accomplish that (?) for now. Turn off all the power everywhere, no cars, strand all ships (so I guess the people on cruises get to starve to death), destroy tons of buildings, cities, and wipe out tons of military installations. Then leave and ask us to care for the planet.
The original plan was to wipe out everyone and everything (at least all the man-made stuff). Klaatu then is convinced to halt that plan mid-stream, which has the inconveniences you mention. Forced to choice, I would guess most people would opt for the latter.

I don't recall any indication of power returning, that the power loss was temporary. What are the physics involved with stopping all wristwatches? Was the SecDef's a wind-up or battery?

well, if there was meant to be any deference to physics as we currently understand it, the power outage can't be permanent, since that would require a continuous interference with the electromagnetic force (or the electroweak force, depending on who you ask); it is far more likely that the power failure was some variation of an electromagnetic pulse, which simply interrupts electrical signals.

also, there's obviously no way to prevent the functioning of mechanical devices, since their functioning isn't based on electromagnetism (except in the indirect way that the interaction of all atoms and molecules depends on the electromagnetic force).

i thought the movie was an entertaining enough diversion for a rainy afternoon. my son liked it well enough.

Re: *** Official THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (2008) Discussion Thread

Went to see the late show tonight with low expectations. I hate it when low expectations are not met. Truly, and unarguably the worst sci fi movie since Battlefield Earth. No redemptive merit whatsoever....horrendous script; appalling acting; miscasting (Kathy Bates as Secretary of Defence...are you KIDDING!!??); the special effects failed to impress...wait!..one thing I DID like was that much of the movies was filmed at Simon Fraser University, a place where I worked for over 12 years in security. Was neat to see some of the sights. This is one of those movies, as a work of art, was an abomination by definition, and if you liked it does not change in fact how bad it is. I need another beer.

Re: *** Official THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (2008) Discussion Thread

I've nothing against remakes. Bogart's Maltese Falcon, undeniably a classic, is in fact the second remake of that tale. But this ham-handed piece of trash is a disappointment to say the least. I mean, I liked some of the back story, but we're the ones who came up with the name GORT? C'mon! An Klaatu came to see world leaders and the best he rates is SECDEF? I appreciate that they didn't monkey with GORT too much (taller, not silver--okay) but where in the hell was the admonition that there is "no limit" to what he could do? And where were (and some out there will be annoyed that I'm not posting spoiler brackets, but people should know) the three most famous words in sci-fi movies? Not here. Trash and poor movie making that will doubtless satisfy many who've never seen the original. And I'm four dollars madder 'cuz I saw it in IMAX!

Is it just me, or are a lot of the criticisms being aimed at the remake also elements in the original? Talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't...

I'd have to re-watch the original, but I don't remember the wholesale slaughter of cities occurring in it.

Exactly two humans died in the original--both soldiers. No destruction, and nothing remotely resembling mass slaughter. In fact, Klaatu specifically says "It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet". From what I'm hearing, this execrable remake has Klaatu with exactly the opposite attitude: "We're damn well going to interfere with how you run your planet as much as we fucking please".

Well, technically he did shut down all technology and power on earth so I can only imagine what happened to some poor people in hospitals and such.

You forget or aren't aware--the original specifically EXEMPTED hospitals (and planes in flight) from the power loss, so nothing bad happened to people in them.

Professor Barnhardt: "I wouldn't want you to harm anyone."

Klaatu: "Something dramatic, but nondestructive. That's quite an interesting problem."

FAR better.

Re: *** Official THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (2008) Discussion Thread

As compared to miniature robots that devoured trucks, people, stadiums and destroyed cities. And since it showed people getting also killed by being eaten from the inside by the little robots, I'd assume everyone in those locations died.

I didn't say ALL of the criticisms were for elements from the original - I said MANY of the criticisms related to bits from the 1951 film...

Wow, it sounds like the makers of this new version have turned TDTESS into a Malthusian wet dream.
