2009 at the Box Office - Page 27

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Some critic said it best. You can no more turn your brain off to have fun than you can cut your tongue out to enjoy a meal. The fun happens IN YOUR BRAIN. I would not expect Megan Fox to grasp that, based on her filmography. I can list 20 blockbusters at the drop of a hat that were well-written, full of spectacle, and possessed decent characters and motivations.

There are levels of movies between Van Helsing and Schindler's List. But I think the concept of gradations are beyond many filmgoers.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Jeez. Isn't there anyone here who enjoyed Transformers 2? Was it that bad? I'll be seeing it next week but I have a feeling it won't be as 'terrible' as some of you whingers have made it out to be. I mean it's a movie about giant alien robots I know what to expect. I can watch pretty much anything and enjoy it, even Van Helsing, though I had to draw the line at Speed Racer which gave me the impression it was made exclusively for pre-teeners.

I said it another thread but I think if you liked the first one, you'll enjoy this one and vice versa.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It has its flaws but overall it was packed with eyecandy, had better humor than I expected and a breakneck pace. It did lose a bit of the spectacle/magic of the first when we were first introduced to the jawdropping transformations.

Looks like if it had opened on Friday it would have had a good chance at breaking The Dark Knight's opening weekend record.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

The way I see it is this, I don't always need a truley engaging script to enjoy a movie, the same as I don't always need action, excitement, tears, or whatever to enjoy others. Sometimes I enjoy a movie just because it's fun, other times I enjoy an extremely simple movie in terms of production that has an enjoyable story. I guess you could say that I turn my brain off for some movies, but that doesn't mean turning off my senses. If I actually had to only wait for amazing stories and amazing production, well let's face it, the list of movies that I could enjoy would be very short. I enjoy being entertained by films, and those which are truly great I purchase on blue ray. I really enjoyed Star trek this year, and will probably enjoy transformers. I know it's going to be silly, hokey, and mind boggling stupid at times, but it will be fun entertainment.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

It is mind-bogglingly stupid throughout. Not at times. It depends on what you need for entertainment. I don't need an amazing story, but I do need a passable one. If you short me on story, you can make up for it with characters (Trek) or humor (The Hangover). TF2 brought nothing for me.

Many of us enjoy being entertained by movies, of many varieties and skill levels. I am tired of excuses for lazy retreads like this, of movies that literally make NO effort to be anything other than effects reels connected by objectification and lowest common denominator humor. It really does not take much more effort to develop a story hook. But as Fonger points out...why should Bay? Why should any maker of blockbusters? $80M in the bank, on the way to the triple century mark.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Exactly, the problem is not the directors, it's the audience. If you keep giving them a sub-standard product and they keep buying by the hundreds of millions, why change?

to quote my favorite author:
Quote:
"People on the side of the The People always ended up disappointed, in any case. They found that The People tended not to be grateful or appreciative or forward-thinking or obedient. The People tended to be small-minded and conservative and not very clever and were even distrustful of cleverness. And so, the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people.

As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up."

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Friday Estimates

#1 "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" $36.7 million ($125.9 million)
#2 "The Proposal" $6.2 million ($56.7 million) 52% Friday-to-Friday drop
#3 "The Hangover" $5.3 million ($171.3 million) 37% Friday-to-Friday drop
#4 "My Sister's Keeper" $5.1 million
#5 "Up" $4.0 million ($241.1 million) 36% Friday-to-Friday drop
#6 "Year One" $2.0 million ($28.5 million) 76% Friday-to-Friday drop (Ouch!)
#7 "The Taking Pelham 1 2 3" $1.5 million ($49.5 million) 52% Friday-to-Friday drop
#8 "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" $1.2 million ($160.9 million) 44% Friday-to-Friday drop
#9 "Star Trek" $1.1 million ($243.7 million) 12% Friday-to-Friday drop
#10 "Away We Go" $510K ($2.9 million) 105% Friday-to-Friday increase
#11 "Land of the Lost" $361K ($46.0 million) 71% Friday-to-Friday drop
#12 "Terminator Salvation" $320K ($121.2 million) 63% Friday-to-Friday drop

Much to no one's surprise, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is completely dominating the box office. The movie looks headed for a Friday-thru-Sunday haul in the neighborhood $100-$110 million.

Talk about an "Ouch!" How does a film drop more than 100%? Did they start refunding some tickets that were sold last weekend?

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

^ I saw Away We Go on Thursday morning and I was the only person in the theater. Granted, it was a Thursday morning, an R rated indie-type movie and the day after Transformers 2 opened but that's still pretty harsh. For what it's worth, it's probably the best movie I've seen this year except for Up.

Actually, I think he meant 'jump' from last Friday. According to Box Office Mojo, 'Away We Go' did $249,185 the previous Friday. It doubled its screen run yesterday.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Malcolm was poking fun, but yes: Away We Go was +105%, not -105%.

My bad. That meant to say increase. It's been fixed.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

That would be kind of funny, though..."We acknowledge that our film was so awful that we're going to refund last weekend's admissions, as well."

Though it seems "Away We Go" might actually be a good film. Perhaps "Transformers 2" should consider that offer.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

It should also be noted that Friday saw the total domestic mark of '09 pass the $5 billion mark in record time. Going into Sunday, more than 700 million theater admissions had been sold. This is easily the strongest pace the box office has enjoyed in terms of overall grosses and hard ticket sales since '04.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

$201M in 5 days for ROTF!

Up has become the year's top box office but I think it's safe to say ROTF will surpass it by next week or in a few days.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Terry...I know I'm a little late to the party with this question but any idea why they changed the release date for 2012 to November? Isn't this the 2nd date change for the film's release? IIRC wasn't the initial release March then changed to July and now to November? Just curious.

Actually, I have a better idea. Bay and Spielberg could take that ticket money and spend it on grammar lessons for the legions of people who have clogged forums since Wednesday defending Bay and the film. While this doesn't apply to everyone who has done so, some of the grammar use and spelling used by these people is beyond pathetic.

As for "Away We Go", the acting is worth the price of admission alone. The story? Meh. But the acting is good. And it runs only 90 minutes or so.

Transfoamers is big gross %201m! whoar! 5 days bigger than nearly Dark Nite!!

That's a stupendous amount of money, would Transformers have grossed more, I wonder, if it opened on friday? What was Dark Knight's opening weekend gross? Hang on a min.... here it is, $158m, 3-days? Wow!

We still have Harry Potter coming up, will that shatter Transformers 2009 record? Exciting innit?

I just hope it pulls a Spider-Man 3 and goes downhill fast.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Why? What kind of reaction is that? How old are you guys here anyway? I'm starting to wonder.

Btw funny you should mention Spider-Man 3, that film grossed nearly $900m worldwide, a colossal amount of money and just $100m behind a certain Batman sequel.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Terry, how is Public Enemies tracking? I've heard very good things about this one, and I am very, very excited to see it this week. I'd like it to do well, since I'd like all Michael Mann movies to do well. That ways, we get more Michael Mann movies.

Too late. The gross so far guarantees a sequel, and I'm guessing the same hacks will be behind that one. The best I can hope for is that they get some talented screenwriters and that Spielberg steps in and takes control of it...
