I think you are right about this Brandon. Transformers 2 will have a huge opening and a decent few weeks when those who don't venture out to movies regularly or for opening weeks see it, but it isn't going to be as big as it could've been if all the reviews are correct. While I wasn't expecting anything great, I was hoping for a fun movie that was a little better than the first. That doesn't sound like it will be the case.

The thing is, Transformers is almost guaranteed 300M (correct?) In one weekend, it may come close to equalling the current Box Office leader for the year (Up!, which just passed ST at around $227M). I believe "Up!" is a lock for $300M. So is Transformers2 pardoning any first weekend let down.. the next in line are HP6.. Avatar maybe(?)

I'm wondering what a dissappointing 5 day total for Transformers2 would be. Would anything under $160M for the 5 days be considered a disaster?

hopefully cameron will be able to show how a real director works.
that he is still the master. mcg was easy to show that. however bay is a bit harder to show.

That's the impression I now get. I was kind of anticipating this film, but I saw an extended trailer in the theater tonight and the premise looks completely laughable, even for transforming robots. Not sure if I'll catch this in theaters now or wait for the Redbox rental.

I'll join the chorus on this sentiment. The original movie wasn't exactly a quality production, but it was fun and entertaining. The focus was still on the human characters, even if they were a step away from cardboard cutouts. If the sequel is merely a two-hour F/X show reel, the movie will open huge but fade fast.

You are correct. It's currently 240M vs. 230M. At current daily weekend rates, Up! will pass Trek Friday. So, good point.

at that point, both might get lapped by Transformers.

I finally talked to someone I know who got a chance to see it at a sneak.. and I had been debating seeing it, I think I will stay home. This wasn't must watch film for me, but the reviews are blisteringly bad. It's below 25% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Even when I disagree with him, I love it when Ebert hates a movie. He can be quite creative and entertaining. From what I've seen the F/X look very good in this film, but that alone does not a good film make.

Why am I not surprised by the reviews for Transformers: RoTF. It's a Michael Bay movie. I don't think the guy has ever made a movie that actually has a good story. When a person goes to one of his films it is precisely for

I was one of the guys wary of the new Star Trek movie a while back. I'm glad it's doing so well. Looking forward to more adventures in Trek's alternate timeline.

Sounds like this decade's Batman & Robin, with a little bit of Jar Jar thrown in.

Even though I'm sure TF2 will open huge (though I'm starting to get dubious as to how it will hold in subsequent weeks), Megan Fox would be wise to take a pass on Transformers 3 IMO if she wants to have any chance of being taken half way seriously. Shia should get far, far, faaaar away from this franchise too. Bay clearly is not interested at all in telling any kind of story with this franchise and after this second film whatever benefit this franchise has had for their career's is probably spent.

I don't think Alicia Silverstone's or Chris O' Donnel's careers ever recovered from B&R even though it wasn't their fault.

Point taken, though you don't have to be "respectable" or really even all that talented to be a movie star(let).

I do think she does risk becoming a total joke if she continues with this franchise and I think she knows it too ... she's started making some snide, backhanded comments about the franchise already.

Then again she could always negotiate/hold out for a huge pay day for TF3, which I guess she might as well take because her future in the business could go bust very quickly too. Might as well cash in and be set for life. She'll never be Angelina Jolie, but I think she is hoping she can be more than a Jennifer Love Hewitt.

It'll be interesting to see if word of mouth from the early screeners has any effect at all on the upcoming weekend grosses. I know from the trailer I saw in the theater on Tuesday and the early bad WOM and reviews, I've moved from "moderately interested" to "likely wait for the DVD."

That's amazing Terry, $60m a day, just amazing, why at this rate by sunday the cacophonous series of explosions would have grossed around $300m! If it had opened on friday it'll most likely have broken Dark Knights opening day record, of course it won't have DK's staying power but still.

Michael Bay must already be preparing another 150mins of needless dialogue punctuated by cacophonous explosions for 2011?

I'll say it: I'm sick and tired of being told to "turn off my brain" to enjoy something. I can be wowed by spectacle and use my brain. Several films have engaged me in such a manner: The Dark Knight, Die Hard, Star Wars, the Jack Ryan films, etc. This idea that one can have pointless, plotless, brainless movies that 'xplode good and not expect anything else is an excuse for selling shit, and I'm not a consumer of shit, no matter how much certain factions of Hollywood want to shove it my face.
