And not just Sunday, according to Mojo's chart, though it's an estimate -

Daily Box Office for Saturday, May 16, 2009

I'm predicting $60m to $70m opening for Terminator Salvation and $30m to $40m for Night at the Museum 2.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

I think "Night at the Museum" will have no problem taking the box office crown this weekend. It's a family comedy and a sequel to an incredibly popular film. I think the "Terminator" brand is running out of steam, evidenced by the recent television series that was mostly ignored by everyone.

The numbers in this thread are decent, but I'd flip them around. I'm thinking (3-day) about $80 million for "Night at the Museum" and about $50 for "Terminator".

"Terminator Salvation" is currently tracking to have a five-day (Thursday-to-Monday) opening haul in the area of $90-$95 million, while the current data on the 'Night at the Museum' sequel suggests a four-day (Friday-to-Monday) launch in the neighborhood of $75-$80 million.

Warner Bros will be out of business on Monday if that movie 'only' makes $50 million.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

I think both films beat tracking. While I also thought the brand was in danger, I think the ads for T:S have been great, and I think Bale brings some serious goodwill. I'm betting T:S opens with a pretty big haul, with NatM right behind it.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Actuals are...$46.2 million for Angels and $43 million for Star Trek. And Star Trek won both Saturday and Sunday.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

So Star Trek seems to be doing well with girls and female audiences, considering the young and attractive cast and the high action 4 quadrant storytelling, could we expect a percentage increase for Star Trek II akin to the percentage increase Pirates II managed?

Not sure about the magnitude, but I would expect the sequel to take in more coin, and do at least $100M on opening weekend.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Using Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as a benchmark for Termiantor 4 box office is a bit like using Star Trek Enterprise as a barometer for Star Trek (2009).

People will only tolerate sci-fi when its on the big screen chok-full of flashy explosions and loaded up with CGI (seems like anyway). Which Terminator Salvation has in spades it seems.

Plus Christian Bale brings a certain level of "street cred" to Terminator Salvation.

Night At The Museum will do well too. No matter which one wins, Hollywood execs will likely be pretty happy with the forthcoming weekend. Neither one will open as big as Indy IV, but in conjunction the two should drive box office over last year.

I also think Year One starring Jack Black is going to be the smash hit surprise of the summer in June. The audience reaction from every trailer I've seen it with has been overwhelmingly positive. The Force is strong with this one.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

I've learned to never trust critics when it comes to McQ. I'm not trying to say he's the next Kubrick but critics were very unfair and incredibly mean spirited to his WE ARE MARSHALL and I think a lot of people have something against him. I don't have high hopes for T4 but I still don't trust the critics on this one.

I'm inclined to agree but the more I read (which, admittedly, isn't much since I like to be relatively spoiler free), the more worried I get.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Must be some exhibitors are expecting "Star Trek" to take a significant hit with the big new releases this weekend. One theater near me is reducing ST from five shows daily to only three beginning on Friday.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

I say a 35 % drop for Star Trek this weekend. Word of mouth has been terrific so I dont expect a significant (more than 50%) dop this Memorial Day weekend.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

From Box Office Guru regarding Star Trek's "stellar" box office performance so far:

Quote:
Displaying amazing legs in its second weekend was the sci-fi reboot Star Trek which dropped by only 43% to bank $43M for a sturdy second place finish. That boosted the cume for the Paramount franchise flick to a stunning $147.6M in only 10.5 days. It was the biggest second weekend haul for any film since last summer's juggernaut The Dark Knight which grossed an eye-popping $75.2M in its sophomore session. It was also the smallest sophomore decline for a $40M+ opener over the past year.

Trek's electric word-of-mouth has been spreading allowing the action pic to win new fans, generate repeat business, and keep Imax auditoriums full. In fact on Saturday and Sunday, it was the number one film in North America edging out Angels & Demons by a small margin. Star Trek enjoyed a healthy 56% Friday-to-Saturday bump compared to just 8% for the Hanks film.

A 43% decline on the second weekend is unusually rare for heavily hyped sci-fi and action films. Trek's performance beat out sophomore drops for such blockbuster franchise tentpoles as The Dark Knight (53%), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (55%), Quantum of Solace (60%), and Fast & Furious (62%). It was even better than the 48% fall that Iron Man witnessed on its way to a long and durable run during the summer box office last year. The Marvel hero was also released by Paramount with Thursday night previews and its $177.8M cume in the first 10.5 days accounted for 56% of its eventual $318.4M domestic final.

By Tuesday, the Kirk-and-Spock adventure will overtake Wolverine to become the top grossing summer film and will set the standard that all future event films this year will try to live up to. Based on its current course, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise should make its way past the $250M mark in North America and could soar much higher if it keeps playing this well.
Emphasis mine.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

That's great news. It has excellent word of mouth around here.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Three of the five films they compare it to made a lot more than $75M opening weekend. I think it is going to continue to do well, but I also attribute the strong second weekend to complete lack of interest in A&D and a very soft Wolverine. Two new tentpoles open this weekend, so we'll see how it holds with real competition. I think Iron Man is a decent comparison, but it won't make that coin. It should have some good summer legs, similar to BB from 2005.

Re: 2009 at the Box Office

Despite some of the comments on this board, the overwhelming majority of critics and moviegoers seem to really love the film. Nice to finally see a Trek film get some love all around.

I believe it will do much better that BB. I think that made about $200 million right? I think Trek has a shot at $250-$300 million.

Trek Worldwide:

Domestic: $152,175,578 69.2%

+ Foreign: $67,746,148 30.8%

= Worldwide: $219,921,726

I haven't read every comment in the Trek thread but I got the vibe that most people enjoyed the movie here too. Of course, the people that hated it were vocal in their dislike but I thought it was pretty well recieved overall.
