Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Any Plans For a Remaster? - Page 3

The Great News on the rumor for TNG now gives me hope for DS9 in the future.  The fact of this also gives me pause on buying and just sticking with my tv recordings which came off local station feeds and look not that bad.  I just do not have the all of the series.  The upgrade would be great too in the manner Matt suggests.

I just wanted to add this review from Amazon for those of us who might be buying the show on ebay or in market place for a cheap price. I cannot believe what people will do to sell bogus dvds.

Well, I love DS9. I'll just get that out there, but now to the boxed set... My
wife bought me this boxed set as one of my birthday gifts. Initially I was
thrilled, but that feeling quickly left after examining it. Even though it was
shrink wrapped, one of the seasons was facing in the opposite direction. After
opening each season, they all felt really cheap and fell apart immediately.
Also, on the back of each season, by the Paramount seal, Star Trek was
misspelled Satr Trek. I'm telling you guys, if your set looks like this, and you
bought it 'new' from the marketplace, you just purchased counterfeit goods, my
friends! I knew it the second I looked at it. She was just trying to get the
best deal and saw a 'new' sealed set on Marketplace for roughly 1/3 off the
Amazon price and made a rational economic decision. I am furious, though, that
people are using the marketplace for these goods. Paramount doesn't always put
love into their packaging, but it would never be this bad. Short story: we
returned the product, got our money back, ordered from Amazon.

After receiving the 'real' product from Amazon, I can say that you will know
yours is real because the colors on the plastic are vibrant and quite visible,
the Paramount seal is easy to make out clearly, and Star Trek is spelled
correctly. It will look very much like the picture on this page.

The knock-offs are getting good, but if it doesn't feel right and things are not
spelled correctly, just send it back - or better yet, buy from Amazon directly.
It is easily worth the extra money to get the real thing, and I am very pleased
with it. Hope this helps someone.

There are further rumors in the last day or so about TNG possibly being remastered for HD. It would take that project being successful before Paramount would devote the considerable resources necessary to remaster DS9 for blu-ray.

See entires from yesterday on The Digital Bits and TrekMovie.com for the stories, or in HTF's blu-ray forum.

Hey Tim thanks for the link!!!!  The response is great too from fans.

I'll probably try and pick up a few of the TNG seasons on blu ray when they are issued. I really would like to have DS9 and Voyager on blu ray.

It would be nice for Paramount to also release the Director's Edition of The Motion Picture on blu ray. But that is another thread! : )

Question.

If all of the TNG episodes have to be recut from the original film, Is it possible that TNG could be reformatted to 16:9? Or was 4:3 film used for the entire series?

Same question for DS9 and Voyager as well.

Thanks!!

The problem with reissuing standard def Star Trek on BluRay is that it would generate a huge amounts of complaint. The average consumer expects BluRay to mean high-definition, not standard definition at higher bitrates. The improvement just isn't enough to justify it. The only thing that might swing such a thing would be to drop that idea but instead sell it by having discs with lots of episodes. You might sell some of those to folks who would welcome the saving in shelf-space. But even that is unlikely given the way that the shows were put out in "slim paks" after the original releases in those whacking great plastic things.

I may have to search, and maybe I'm loopy on cold meds, but didn't they issue out a bluray with I think 1 episode of each of the series a while back.. maybe it was a promo, I can't remember

You couldn't do 16:9 without compromise, but you could probably do 1.66:1, as there is some extra picture information. I'd think it best if they did do that, because unlike TOS there's never going to be an HD version of the original shows. If they recognized these as their own thing, and didn't try and force them to mirror the originals, they'll already be much better off.

Thanks! I did a bit of surfing and came across an article noting that a bit of TNG was used for the Enterprise finale...

I went forward with a purchase from ebay for DS9.  The end price going from 125.00 to 190.00 from one seller alone.  I purchased mine from this particular seller.I made sure it was not coming from China or anywhere else other then the USA.  I also made sure to read all feed backs on the seller.  I was surprised to receive my set in yesterday's mail.  I watched the series 2hr laste episode and it looked great!!  I also made a carefull inspection of all the disc's.  The discs come packaged season by season in a box marked 2004.  The factory plastic was unopened on box and on each set.  Sellers also have the chosen set which is packaged differently and i was told they could be imports and not to buy from them.

I have a 3 year old Samsung LCD with a Panasonic Blu-ray machine. The show looks great to me.  I am glad i made the purchase so far.  I really enjoy this show!!!  I want an HD copy but this will do until when that happens.  I am holding off on TNG because i think something could happen very soon about that issue.  TNG is on BBC too during the week.  I also get it in Chicago every night during prime time.  I will wait this out and see what happens.

I just wanted to report that i bought it and it looks good on my TV.   I also wanted to once more caution people when you buy.  Remember my earlyer post from an Amazon review of a market place purchase.  I was really shocked they could duplicate jewel case's but missed spelled Star Trek what a joke on them.  Good fortune for the consumer.

Thanks for the update on the purchase. I have thought about picking up the series used on DVD. I really do hope it comes to blu ray eventually.

Sounds like it's a pretty sure with TNG Remastered and that things are moving forward with it at CBS.

Tim yes they look good but........ problems with discs have begun.  I caution anyone who buys them on ebay.  I wish I had spent the extra cash and bought from Amazon direct.

Tim I did not mean to scare you off ebay.  I just think that when you buy 49 discs how in the world are you going to have time to check them all.  Even 1 season sets i really think should be bought from someone like Amazon.  I will never buy off Market Place again or ebay.  I was a big supporter of Amazon Market Place but the old saying once burned i guess applys to me.

Understood. I think I will hold out to see what is coming from CBS Home Video in the next few months. I checked out the new Star Trek Magazine yesterday and there is an ad for complete seasons sets that are coming to the UK through out this year from CBS HV.

TNG Remastered is underway at CBS HV as well.

I'll probably try and hold out for DS9 and Voyager to be reissued in the near future. I did pick up season 1 of Voyager on DVD as the local Wal Mart had it for $20. Of course season 2 is $30-40...

Star Trek Magazine did a nice review of DS9 season 1 episode If Wishes Were Horses. It's worth reading!

I don't want to diminish your enthusiasm, but any DS9 blu-rays are many years away. The TNG project - if it happens - will take a few years (I'd say at least two) and the sales of those will depend on whether DS9 gets the go-ahead. I wish DS9 on BD could be available tomorrow, but it's going to take a while, if it happens at all. FWIW, I'd like to see any new effects sticking as closely as possible to the original, which had some great ones, especially in its later years.

I should watch TNG here in Chicago to see how it looks.  I TOS looks good both are back to back but i have conflicts which just keep me from watching.  DS9 though i have to say was my favorite.  I just loved the storylines on that show.  The War was a stroke of genius.  I remember standing in line at the local theater back in 1999 to get Star Wars tickets for the midnight showing of the first batch of the last 3.  I do not even want to go there.  We all talked Star Trek to pass the time and i gave a whole bunch of reasons why i loved DS9.  I could see they all thought i was insane so i shut up.

Agreed. It will take time. CBS will get to DS9 eventually I believe.

I would dearly love to see this series on Blu-Ray. Barring that, remastering is better than nothing: the problem with macroblocking etc in early seasons may be due not to low bitrates or even the interlaced nature of the stuff, but just that the earlier compression efforts were less practiced and informed. The later seasons also are forced "progressive," meaning an "inverse telecine" was applied converting 29.97 to 23.976, leaving the composites in bad shape since they were done in 29.97, the motion is jumpy and more interlaced than ever for effects, but filmed interiors are improved. Odd approach, but it doubtless saved some bits.

The Dominion War in HD would be a sight to behold. Fortune favors the bold!

I thought i would repeat the edited comments from this DS9 buyer.  Why you might ask???  I fell into the trap i warned everyone else about. Here are the comments from that fan.

When I received the DS9 Box Set even though it was shrink wrapped, one of the seasons was facing in the opposite direction. After opening each season, they all felt really cheap and fell apart immediately. I'm telling you guys, if your set looks like this, and you bought it 'new'you just purchased counterfeit goods, my friends! I knew it the second I looked at it.

After receiving the 'real' product from Amazon, I can say that you will knowyours is real because the colors on the plastic are vibrant and quitevisible.

The knock-offs are getting good, so  buy from Amazon directly. It is easily worth the extra money to get the real thing, and I am very pleasedwith it. Hope this helps someone.

I had to in the end buy from Amazon direct.  The problems i had on the other set vanished. The statements in the above review are true.  I was shocked.  I read some where here it is best at time of purchase to always check your sets rather then put them away for later viewing.  This is very good advice to anyone be it movie tv series whatever.

I did make sure that i bought from a seller with high postive feedback and many transactions.

Money returned without question.  I just feel bad for those who get trapped with a bad set from China or wherever on ebay or Amazon Market Place.  Get your money back at the first sign of trouble. The whole set will in the end have problems

The Amazon set came today. I still had my list of bad dvds and guess what no problems.

I want to comment once again about the quality of the dvds on my panasonic 2008 blu ray player on my samsung 2008 LCD TV.  The show to me looks fantastic.  I do not understand why i do not see the problems in the films.  The shows are up converted on the blu ray and i have loved everyone of them.

I intend to buy TNG if it goes HD. I loved the show. DS9 still holds as number one to me in the entire Star Trek Series.  I love the characters and actors who protray them.  The storys and War was as i said a stroke of genius by the writers.

I used to watch Voyager the lady captain is great!!  But when ratings were down i heard one show described to watch this week as "Lust in Space" that did it for me.  I watched the last season somewhat and of course the last show which was very well done. The best show in the series i would say.  I may get season  7 because they had some good shows at the last.

We nearly got suckered into some Chinese counterfeits on a STAR TREK: VOYAGER set.

After no problems at all with TNG and DS9 sets - most bought from Amazon marketplace sellers - we began our VOYAGER journey in late 2009 by finding the first two seasons in a Walmart store for a reasonable $30.  I suggested them to the wife who was looking for some Christmas presents for me, and she agreed.

We began watching them at Christmas that year, and we both realized that we'd need to get more sets to continue all the way through the series.  Once again we headed to the Amazon marketplace and ordered seasons three and four from two different sellers.  Season four arrived first and when I opened it, I immediately knew it was a knock-off.  It was sealed in shrink-wrap, but it wasn't the same style of packaging that had graced seasons one and two.  I didn't even bother attempting to play the discs - it didn't matter to me - these were fakes.

We contacted the seller and he claimed to be shocked that these were counterfeits and was quick to return our money and we sent the set back.  We then bought season four straight from Amazon for a few dollars more, and had no more issues going through season seven.

So you do have to be careful with these sets, particularly in the marketplace.

DS9 is one of our favorites too.  We tend to rotate out STAR TREK viewing among the various series and we're nearing the end of TNG, so a DS9 viewing is just around the corner.  DS9's mastering does indeed leave something to be desired, particularly some of the darker scenes, and it's always been a bit soft.  And the softness just gets magnified on today's larger screens.

The Counterfeit Invasion of The Star Trek Series.  Here is what one fan just posted at Amazon yesterday on the Voyager Series.

I ordered this item with the understanding that it would be new. Two of the discs skip during at least one episode and it looks like a copy that was made, but advertised as "new."

I bought season 7 of Voyager but not ebay or Market Place. I bought it straight from Amazon.  The whole thing is distrubing.  People are being fooled and they do not know it. Ebay Amazon Market Place and yes Ioffer.com.  Someone on Ioffer. tried to sell me DS9. I emailed repeatly what is your source.  The seller finaly told me it was China. I then bought it on Ebay and the rest is history Knock offs is what  i received.

The bottom line is this. You like to gamble then buy from these sellers.  I look at ebay where i purchased mine. I was lucky to received full reimbursment from my seller.  I say if you see multiple sets being sold by the same seller do not risk it.

I still like my DS9 quailtiy. I have a 50 inch Samsung LCD they look great to me. I have never seen any tv dvds that come close to Voyage though in picture quality.  I will say that DS9 upconvert  on my panasonic blu ray looks good on my set.

I am glad Harry you did not get sucked in.  I just hope bringing this up here will stop others from getting sucked in.

Too bad about all of the bootlegs on Amazon and other sites. I'll keep that in mind if I end up getting more seasons of Trek on DVD. I used to order from Deep Discount many years ago, but Amazon started beating them on price.

Voyager looks pretty good for DVD and picture quality? I have season 1 and thought it was ok. Is it maybe the later seasons that look really good? I have a 54" plasma.

While on the subject of Trek..

Late 2012 or Summer 2013? June 2012 seems like it could be a real time crunch?

While we're on the subject of legit Trek DVD sets, StarTrek.com has Voyager sets for $30 each.  They're all back ordered right now, but this is probably as legit as you can get.

The saga of the counterfeit Star Trek TV series continues.  TNG is full of knock offs from what i read over weekend.  The fans even give tips on which TNG box you should stay away from and which to buy.  I even shall print here what one fan complained of on the DS9 series just this weekend.

Season 3 Disc 2 has disc 3's epsoides and I can't find Disc 2's epsoides anywhere.

I was so busy that i did not even see that Amazon filled my Voyager season 7 with a Market Place Seller.  I have accepted this in the past but not this time.  I phoned Amazon they canceled the order and told me they had a copy to send me from Amazon. I told them about the counterfeit business and i would not trust anyone on market place.  I told them to read the reviews on the Star Trek series posted at Amazon.com

I find Amazon.com's policy of replacing primary listings with MarketPlace sellers intensely annoying - probably more so than others because I am outside of the USA and often find that "bargain prices" are unusable because the sellers only ship domestically. This sometimes happens even when fulfillment is by Amazon and in that case the only way to check is to put it in the basket and get told "we are unable to ship this item to your address"

IMHO the primary listing should always be sold and fulfilled by Amazon, marketplace sellers always be in the "New and used" subsection.

I should have mentioned it was a weekend sale celebrating the Voyager finale's anniversary.  My confirm shows they'll be shipped at the end of June.
