Weak audio form Scientific Atlantic cable box

I purchased a samsung blu-ray htib system. I get great audio when watching blu-rays, but I get weak audio when watching tv from my cable box. The receiver doesn't have hdmi inputs, so I used optical audio. Sound only comes out of the front speakers and it is really weak. What would cause this?

I know. I have been posting in basics because I am new to home theater. I found the audio section after posting my original. I thought it might be a better fit for this section.

For future reference: in a case like this, it is best to ask a moderator to move your post to the appropriate section. They're happy to do it. You'll find "contact a moderator" links on most pages of the HTF.
