The show was about to begin a major upswing at that moment. Josette's ghost had already manifested herself for the first time, Bill Malloy's ghost is about to show up, to be followed by Matthew's captivity of Victoria, and the arrival of Laura Collins. The most original run in the show's history. Only the 1795 and 1897 storylines approach that level.
The one thing I don't like about the show is the unresolved plotlines. Once it became a spook show, Victoria's quest for her parentage was jettisoned, leaving her character adrift. I also thought the neutering of Burke's character was a mistake. In addition, writing him out of the show turned DS into all Barnabas all the time, which wasn't fair to either Jonathan Frid or the writers.
