HTF DVD REVIEW: Casablanca: Ultimate Collector's Edition

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-2-2008

RE: Casablanca at Target---the packaging is confusing as to what is the "exclusive" part. The sticker on the cover mentions the Party Supplies (or something like that) and the back cover shows and describes the accessories (it shows place card settings, etc.). Not sure how much of this is (or is not) included in other retailers copies.

RE: Perry Mason---Target's price is $39.99, but more bothersome is the packaging change from slipcover boxes to the translucent case. Bummer!!!

Well, based on Ken McAlinden's review linked to in Tim's post (just above your, Eric), I'd say you hve probably put your finger on the Target exclusive "gift."

Packaging

In addition to the Jack Warner: The Last Mogul documentary, what sets this "Ultimate Collector's Edition" apart from the "Two-Disc Special Edition" that preceded it is its deluxe packaging including numerous physical extras.

The contents of the "Ultimate Collector's Edition" are enclosed in sturdy blue-green cardboard box which opens by sliding the top half off of the bottom. The box itself is enclosed in a thinner cardboard slipcover with an intricately patterned Moroccan arch laser-cut into the front. Both the box and the slipcover are adorned with gold foil representations of the movie's logo, images of Bogart and Bacall, and other text. Inside the box, are the following:
  • A tri-fold digipack containing the three discs
  • A cardboard box containing a Casablanca logoed Passport holder and luggage tag.
  • A Hardcover 48 page photo book with several publicity and production images from the film and an extensive essay about the film's production and legacy by Rudy Behlmer.
  • A cardboard folder with seven replicas of Casablanca movie posters, three replicas of vintage lobby cards, and three replica documents including
    • A July 17, 1940 letter from Warner Bros. Advertising and Publicity Director S. Charles Einfeld to one of his employees directing him to sell Bogart as a romantic star to overcome his typecasting as a "gangster character".
    • A December 31, 1941 inter-office memo from Hal Wallis to all Warner Bros. departments indicating that the film's title was changing from "Everybody Comes to Rick's" to "Casablanca".
    • An April 3, 1942 inter-office memo from Hal Wallis to Jack Warner strongly discouraging the casting of George Raft in favor of Humphrey Bogart.
My favorite item in the folder is a replica of the actual letter of transit prop that was used in the film. The replica posters and lobby cards are on sturdy cardboard while the replica documents and prop are on regular paper.
  • A paper insert that can be used to order a 27" x 40" Casablanca movie poster if the coupon is mailed in with a sales receipt for the Casablanca UCE, a proof of purchase tab from the promotional paper sticky-tacked to the DVD Box, and $3.25 in shipping and handling.
  • A promotional insert for Warner Blu-Ray discs.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-2-2008

What's up with The Day The Earth Stood Still on Blu-ray? I went to Best Buy, Circuit City and Target over lunch and nobody had it in stock. To be fair, I really didn't expect Circuit City to have it and knew that Target would be a crap-shoot. After I pointed out the ad for the Blu-ray version in this week's circular, the BB droid I showed it to told me they did not have any copies in their system. I asked why does BB bother to advertise it at all if they don't plan on carrying it and she said, "I don't know... but do you want it on DVD? I think we have that."

Out of frustration, I checked the BB web site to see if I could order it online and do a store pickup. After entering my zip code, not one of the six stores in the state within 150 miles shows it as being available. I ended up saving $9 dollars and ordering at from Amazon. Some days, instant gratification just isn't worth the hassle...

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-2-2008

The Target Casablanca set adds some metal name card holders to the UCE so you can reserve your dinner table just like the ones at Rick's American Cafe, I guess.

Target had some other low low prices on multi-disc sets. For instance, they have an exclusive bundle box of the Fox "Western Classics" 3-title set and the "Michael Shayne Mysteries" 4-title set for a total of $12.99. I would have paid that just for "The Gunfighter".
