I never claimed you did. Paul_Scott disputed whether anyone had said "the shifting AR was going to hurt sales" (emphasis mine). Sales can be "hurt" and still be huge. As for your view on the subject, your quotation speaks for itself.

Why alienate even a portion of that niche market? It's dumb.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

i couldnt get the easter egg to work at all.

and the only real gripe i have with the movie is when the joke is being held upside down at the end, they rotated the camera so we see him right side up. that bothered me in the theater and still bothers me.

i was watching it on my ipod yesterday and was able to turn it back around and the scene just seemed more natural to me with him actually being upside down to me.

Did you notice any EE?

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Watched it last night on my 92" projection set-up. I must admit that I did notice the occasional EE, but I agree that it's a result of prepping the 35mm footage for IMAX. Fortunately, it was only there sporadically and it did not distract much from the viewing experience.

The VAR factor I also noticed, but for the reasons Nolan wanted it there - to really open up those scenes. That was very nice.

I couldn't get it to work on my Sony BDP-350, either. Bummer.

I noticed the heavy grain removal on my Nano...and there's nothing so dramatic as the VAR on a 2" screen!

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

I watched a few parts yesterday. Looks really good. The IMAX material looks fantastic. The 35mm stuff is kinda variable. Some of it looks great and sharp. Other parts seem to have some mild DNR applied as they appear a little smoother and softer. I did see EE in various spots, but it's not too noticeable unless you're looking for it.

On the variable aspect ratio, it was only really distracting when it would cut from IMAX material back to the 2.35:1 stuff. Mostly, I would say it came from disappointment. I wish the whole film was shot in IMAX.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

I meant to comment on the IMAX scenes since I didn't see the film in IMAX during it's release and this was my first exposure to it, not counting the opening bank robbery scene featured on the Batman Begins BD.

Nolan IMO made probably the best use of the format he could without filming the entire film in IMAX, I liked how he used it mainly for establishing shots of cities and the scene, one of my favorite shots in the film, when Joker was staggering swiftly out of the exploding hospital lol.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Christopher Nolan will be doing a BD Live audio commentary for the film this coming Thurdsay (Dec. 18 @ 6 p.m. pacific). You have to be one of the first 100,000 people to sign up in order to see it.

While I'd like to complain about how stupid this is and that a commentary should have just been included on the disc, right now I think it's more important to ensure I get to hear it at all. I've signed up for WB's BD live account, but I don't know if that's all you have to do or not?

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Why do you have to be the first 100,000 to see it?!

I don't know if it's just a promotional gimmick or if they have to manage their bandwidth.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Ok, so a couple of hours after I signed up with Warner's BR live I received an e-mail with an invitation for the TDK event, and promptly confirmed. There's also the option to go ahead and ask 3 questions, so I grilled him on the use of Imax cameras (which, all-in-all I don't really support) and asked for a more detailed explanation of the Gordon faking his death plan.

Hopefully someone can make an audio recording of the chat. Or I hope it's preserved. I'd love to listen to it.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Oh, so that's why. It's interactive. It's more a chat than a commentary as I understand.

Agree with the above. 92" screen from ~8.5' away. We watched a rental but enjoyed it so much I bought it yesterday.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Got around to watching this yesterday. Even on my modest 52" Sony XBR4, the EE was very apparent and at times distracting. Sometimes I wish I had never learned what EE is because now it's too easy to spot.

The aspect ratio switching didn't bother me or the wife too much.

It's pretty standard to talk about the film's details when discussing the quality, especially if it's related to specific scenes where problems might crop up.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Glitches, Easter eggs...

I picked up the Blockbuster rental yesterday. It's sitting at home right now on the kitchen counter. I will watch it in the next few days, perhaps even tonight.

So the only people who should be reading this thread are people who saw the film in the theater, got it.

The Dark Knight Blu-Ray Sales Shatter All Records
Sales of Over 1.7 Million Blu-ray Discs(TM) Worldwide After One Week

Last update: 12:00 a.m. EST Dec. 17, 2008
BURBANK, Calif., Dec 17, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- --Over 1 Million Blu-ray Discs(TM) Sold in U. S. Alone

The Dark Knight took the world by storm on Blu-ray and DVD, breaking records for 2008. The blockbuster hit from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan became an instant must-own classic with Blu-ray sales of over 1.7 million units and total DVD and Blu-ray sales of 13.5 million worldwide*, including consumer sales and rental sales, in one week. Brisk consumer sales - totaling over 10 million with one week of sales reported - are expected to continue through the holiday season. The Dark Knight is the best selling Blu-ray title in history and will become the best selling 2008 title overall this week. The response to the digital copy offering included on the Blu-ray and Special Edition DVD has been remarkable with the number of consumers activating their digital copies approaching 300,000. The Dark Knight is already the number one movie for the year on the iTunes 2008 Chart.

The Dark Knight marks the first time that a major feature film has been shot in part using IMAX(R) cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of film formats. The Dark Knight Blu-ray disc takes advantage of the marriage of IMAX(R) and 35mm formats by using the hybrid master to replicate the unique theatrical experience. The IMAX scenes are also included on the 2-disc Special Edition as bonus materials.

* The Dark Knight figures included sales data from US, UK, Canada, Japan, Benelux and Australia

I see a lot more of this than video-domain edge enhancement although there are infrequent and minor instances that look like that, too.

The thing is, we KNOW that the ringing has nothing to do with the photographic process because none of the HD trailers showed any signs of EE. The very first screenshots from the BD to appear online had a comparison to the same scene from the trailer, which exhibited no EE whatsoever and looked far better.

I think you're remembering the ultimate collection release where they greenmogrified the first film to match the sequels.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Why didn't I hear anybody complain about the edge enhancement applied to the IMAX version, when it was still in the theatres? If it wasn't that noticable on an IMAX screen, it must not be an issue on Blu-Ray, I think?
