The COOLEST Christmas present.. you know...

It is that time of year again. You know, when we rush to malls and department stores then spend hours wandering aimlessly about looking for that special gift which is 'perfect' for our loved ones. After eons of anxiety-ridden meandering through hostile throngs of others in the same dilemma, we finally settle for something. At the time it seems cool enough, but on Christmas day when your loved-one unwraps the power hand-soap dispenser you realize that you've failed yet again... (as you set it next to the über-cool-master 5000 gift she bought you)

So this year it is HTF to the rescue!!! We will all share our collective coolness (admittedly not as impressive as it may sound) and put together a list of cool gifts we can get. This will spare us HOURS of time, mountains of anxiety, piles of embarrassment and who knows, maybe even redemption from that soap thingy...

So here is the rules; we'll start with gifts suitable for the ladies. For the most part this forum is men (but ladies - please participate - we NEED your help!), so a list for men would be self-serving. A list for kids would be too easy. If successful we'll move on to the men and possibly later the kids - but for now lets stay with gifts for ladies old enough to have moved-on from toys. Wives, mothers, daughters, girlfriends, secretaries, lunch ladies, whoever...

Additionally, the gift must be below $200 in cost; This is a rough year for many here, plus overspending on the ladies has often been our 'get out of jail free' card for shopping. Keeping it below $200 makes it more of a challenge and more helpful.

Please post an image of your gift idea and a brief description, price, and a link if you please. Try to keep it original, unusual and unique. Write what you think makes it cool. Please try to keep to the topic. If we're successful then we can all finish our shopping with plenty of time to spare for a bucket o' wings and a beer at Hooter's!

I know you said to keep it away from toys, but my (almost 40) wife and mother of two has really, really been jones'n for a WiiFit.

WiiFit (assuming you can find one): $89.99.

For the bicycle commuter in your life (female or male), the Axiom Monsoon waterproof panniers are ingeniously designed, sturdily constructed, and very reasonably priced at around $80 a pair. Note that a front or rear rack is needed for mounting.

For the pizza lover in your life:

A Pizza delivery bag! Don't let your pizza get cold on the way home!

My wife got me one ten years ago and we still use it regularly. Pizza's always piping hot.

Re: The COOLEST Christmas present.. you know...

Nothing "cool" from me this year., but I'm trying to have a bit of a theme for my wife.

She recently got a new camera, and has a newfound interest in photography. To encourage her in her hobby, I'm buying a couple of photography books and a monopod. (I already got her the SDHC card she needed and she bought herself a camera bag, so I'm out there.) I wanted to also get her a day-seminar on photography basics, but I can't find such a thing in my area.

I guess the "cool" factor is that I'm working somewhat without a list. I'm a list guy, and she's a non-list girl. So I'm attempting to find some presents that she won't expect, having not explicitly told me to get them.

Sorry I do not have a picture

One thing that I have had a lot of success with is the pre assembled gift baskets that various stores make. I however take their concept and buy things that are specific for the person I am shopping for at that time. This year I am making my wife a basket with the following items.

Hand lotion, bubble bath, foot soak and foot brush, travel set with body lotion, shower gel, bath salts and hand cream, foam bath, soap, bath seltzers, linen spray, body butter, an absorbent microfiber bath turban and a few other items that I stumble across.

I will make sure to pick out her favorites items in each product line so that the gift is specific to her taste. I have made one of these for my father in law in the past and filled it full of hunting stuff and snack foods.

I bought my wife the Anne of Green Gables DVD set. It has always been one of her favorites. In the past I have gotten her a gift certificate to a local spa. It was something she enjoys, but would never get for herself.

Dave, you have saved my marriage...I didn't even know there was an Anne of Green Gables set. My wife is a huge fan and always watches these on tv, why didn't I think of this!?

Re: The COOLEST Christmas present.. you know...

My wife always puts out a list, that helps – but I find the following formula works best.

We have 3 small kids (all under 5) – so I use the list to get her something from each of the kids. When using the list, if something is sort of vague, always get a “good one” as apposed to a “cheap one” if given the choice. She usually is surprised to get the good one when she is expecting the cheap one.

From me – I always get her something she is not expecting but would like. Most of the time, this involves some kind of jewelry that she would never buy for herself – some ear rings, necklace or a bracelet usually work. I check out overstock.com so I don’t break the bank. A set or theme helps here as well – like all pearls, jade, hearts, diamonds, ect..

If there is something she could use and would enjoy – have fun with “extras”. One year a digital camera was the gift – but I through in a camera bag and a larger card as well to go with it. To go with this as a follow-up birthday present, a portable printer to go with it.

I just listen to my wife and get her things that she wants. Likes and dislikes will differ between women. For example, some women would slap a guy if he gave her a WiiFit (while others would think it's the best gift in the world). The thing that makes a gift 'special' is that you actually thought about it (and just didn't buy her a 'generic woman' gift).

If someone doesn't drop hints, have them create an Amazon wishlist.

Every year my brother in law cars the turkey with the same old knife - so this year I got him an electric carving knife. Not too expensive and quite perfect for him.
